Nice video, be careful when wading in the river. What brand of fly rod did you use? That's a good first time fly fishing experience for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Slow down and strip the line down real in the fish until your fish is closer to you . Play the fish and tire him out . You will loose less gear that way you will get it back . Once you land the fish get your hands wet before you release your fish back into the river !
Dude, that was scary when you went down! Seems like a lot of people are advising you on how to play a fish. It's important, but it seemed like your tippet was bad, seeing how it snapped so easily when you tested it mid-video. Would you say the knot came undone at the fly? Or the tippet/line snapped? There's a way to tell. If it was a bad knot, the end would be like a curly-Q. You can go budget on the rod and reel, but buy some quality name-brand tippet material. Fresh tippet. Scientific-Anglers/Rio/Umpqua/etc.
I'm almost 100% certain reeling it in all crazy is why it broke. A lot of these fish don't fight right out the gate and once this fish actually decided to run it snapped it instantly since it wasn't allowed to take line. Just a rookie mistake, I'm sure this guy is a lot better a year later.
Why are you horsing the fish in? You have to play the fish, not winch it in.. also when fishing a pool or small run go downstream then fish upstream because the fish face upwards..
what flies did you use that the fish bit on? also a tip, I've fly fished a bit and when you hook a good one let him run otherwise your tippet will give way, you just have to play the fish you can't just wrestle him in. Hope this helps, you might want to check out the orvis guide to fly fishing I learned a lot there. Tight lines and better times.
thank you for the tip. I used the San Juan Worm bead I got from amazon and it gave me my first bite. I noticed fish jumping so I went with what I think its called a "parachute adams" and got 4 hits.
good choice is to fish mid october. elk hair caddis #12-16 is good as well as woolly buggers #8-10, parachute hoppers #14, copper johns #14, and the parachute adams #12-16, and the san jaun worm #8-10 though these patterns especially nymphs and wet flies work best generally all year. just experimenter with what works. Good luck!
Its not about the line bro, it takes patience to land a fish.. you're reeling it like you have 12lb test line.lol tire the fish out. But anyways nice vid bro.
+Dante Aroni thx for the sub. South from Winton park on N.Piedra Rd. You will see an open dirt area and from there be able to see the alta weir. If you get to Avocado Lake your too far down.
Usually when fly fishing if it's a big fish you don't use the reel to fight the fish like you would a spinning reel because fly reels do not have fine drags like a good spinning reel so when you horse the fish in like you would on a spinner you will loose the fish 9 out of 10 times. Really the reel is to wind in the slack line after you've used the stripping method to tire out the fish. The rainbows in there are 14-20 inches so not your small stockers.
Mike Hang this video is first time on the fly. since then only tried fly fishing 2 other times. how often I go fishing varies, but I'm sure u have a good idea since ur asking. :)
Hey here's some tips for you. I fly fish quite a bit, you need to let some line out of your reel and work with that line that line is called your stripping line. Learn to do a proper cast which is called false casting. When you cat you will let a little bit of your stripping line out on the forward cast. You need to learn the back and forward parts of the false cast. This cast will allow you to cast you line (not your fly) further out. With fly fishing unlike regular fishing you cast your line not the fly. Allow the line to load your rod and that will power your cast. If your interested I'm available to help you with your cast if you want
what is it with guys having new gear and never remove the plastic that's over the cork handle. Fly fishing is an art in patients, you are not using a spinning rod outfit. Finesse is the best way to get them in and appreciate the art of fly fishing.
