Great video. Just wondering how you cast such a long leader and get your fly's to turn over ?
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 5 лет назад
normally fishing from a drifting boat so always have the wind behind you so no problem really! if no wind i don't cast a full line and stop it short to push the fly's forward or use a double haul to increase my line speed, it's a bit daunting at first airalising such a long leader but with practice is no problem ,netting a fish caught on the point fly can sometimes be a problem with such a distance from the point fly to the last dropper! seen anglers dangerously standing on the seat at full stretch or hand lining them in!!! can be tricky at times!! hope this helps? Hi Leigh, I must say that is a very good comprehensive tutorial on how to fish a method.There are far to few videos with that exacting information so , great stuff mate! I am going to be fishing Rutland with options for Pitsford and Grafham from the 16th May -19th May - any help with Flies, and styles for this time of year would be greatly appreciated as this will be our first time on the water and we are struggling a bit for info. Thanks for your videos a great help for an old traditional wet fly man. Alistair

@leighpond5928 7 лет назад
wow what a great time to be on these waters! buzzers will always catch fish on all these waters all year round but especially that time of the year! strait line nymph will possibly out fish the bung fishing a team of 4 flys with a heavy weight buzzer on the point,if at Pitsford try a Green Cruncher great fly on there this time of year. I have just been on Grafham fishing the England Qualifier there and while Nymphs paid a large part in the match Cat bobby was the best fly for me on a di 3 if you need any flys go to Flash Attack flys run by Craig Barr one of my team mates,you can call him and he can get you the hot patterns at the moment! Craig is on 07921335197 or go to Flash Attack web site, message me nearer the time and i should be able to give you a good idea which one of the waters is fishing best,defo Rutland at the moment! its on fire!!!!

Leigh, Thank you so much for the info, I dress all my own flies but, keep my options open. I will certainly give Craig a call if needs must. I will contact you again next week for the update on the waters offer. Thank you so much you have been a great help. I checked out your other videos, brilliant We have rented a small cottage in Edith Weston so hopefully we are in the middle of it all.Really excited, Good luck with the England qualifications. Cheers for the moment. Alistair

Hi Leigh, I have really enjoyed your videos. Thank you. I am going to Graham for the first time in September. Could you tell me which flies will work there at that time? Regards Martin
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 4 года назад
Depends Martin if you are off the boat or bank really? Off the bank in a few months defo shrimp patterns but also killer fly is the green snake which imitates roach fry around then, slow glass line rolly polly deadly, have you seen my first film on the killer shrimp a few years ago it has the shrimp patterns in it? off the boat i would still probably fish 12ft slow tip with a washing line, small fab on top dropper size 12 then 2 off size 10 black diawl backs and a small 12 booby on the point to start as there will still be fish in open water, best drifts for me that time of year deep water point willows. would be worth investing on a guiding trip on there as you will learn as much in a day as you would in several years lol have a look at my web sit 'Leigh pond-fly fishing services' but anything else i can help you with just let me know? Hi Leigh.Just wondering are you using a floating fly line with this method. Also you mentioned below that you used this method with a shuttlecock/any dry fly. Was that on the point instead of the booby along with two nymphs as droppers? Thanks.
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 6 лет назад
yes normally fished on a floating line,but can be on any line really! mostly use midge tip or ghost tip lines with it,not so much on the fast sinking gear! you could use a dry fly but i always use a booby with it normally,if you want to fish a bit deeper just use one booby on the point instead of two, hope this helps

Great demo. Thanks. Wondering about the leader construction. You mention 8lb line but are you using a level leader or a taper down to 8lb? Does the line get smaller after the first dropper?
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 6 лет назад
no use 8lb Fulling Mill floro carbon very hard wearing strait through!! needs to be quite brutal for the large waters i generally fish and if you get a double up stand more chance of getting both in!!! also floro is supposed to be invisible under water! hope this helps?

Hi leigh what type rod you using In the video? Lenght and weight? And is it your usual rod for rainbows? Thanks
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 4 года назад
Was using my Lomas distance 8 weight, bit of a beast for what we were doing but when competition fishing have little time to change over rods and generally fish the same rod weight all day! would be best with a 7 weight rod for this style of fishing, always use 10 ft rod when boat fishing as you can hang the flys out from the boat better,hope this helps, have also recently set up a guiding service check out 'Leigh pond fly-fishing services' if you know anyone that needs and tuition or and improvers that want to learn a few new methods Leigh

Superb set of videos. Thank you for some very informative tips. Do you have any tying instructions for the hair rig buzzer? I have looked over and over at the video but can't see if its a plastic or a cleverly tied body on nylon Any help would be much appreciated.
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 6 лет назад
thank you so much,the tying is a a little involved with the body made from a cut down hook with black flexy floss whipped on, then fill the body out with tying thread finish off with black varnish,you can tie breathers on top and bottom or supa glue if you wish,go back to the thorax and finish off by tying in some orange cheeks finish off with some Sally Handsons hard as nails,hope this helps

Very informative thanks! At what length do you set the droppers at ie 8" 10"....never usually have much luck casting this many flies from the bank on a windy day at Draycote, usually ends up in a tangled mess! Not sure about a pod of fish though?
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 6 лет назад
thanks for watching Paul,normally have my droppers at about 8 inches don't like them too long myself as they do twist round, can be difficult from the bank sometimes especially if your casting into the wind or its coming over your wrong shoulder!!! i sometimes only use one fly with these conditions! but with the wind behind you no problem casting a team of 4,practice makes perfect! so they say!! love Draycote great dry fly fishing there,have not fished it this season how did it fish this year? What was you not sure about the pod of fish?
@paulbarnes8962
@paulbarnes8962 6 лет назад
Hi Leigh Thanks for the info, Draycote has fished very well up until the past few weeks with the level down considerably its pushed the fish in to deeper water hard to reach from the bank. The evening sessions have been good though with some nice hatches with buzzers and hoppers doing well. Its a struggle on a windy day from the bank though and last Tuesday there was a lot of algal bloom in suspension......that didn't help matters. As for 'A pod of Trout' the collective noun for trout is school or shoal........not important just pointing it out............great videos all the same so keep up the great work and tight lines!

Fishing Draycote tomorrow ! club comp. Would love to beat our top rod for a change ! would this method work in the heat ?
@leighpond5928
@leighpond5928 6 лет назад
yep but when they go down i would use 10 foot fast tip line and 3 heavy buzzers close together to get them down quick! cast it out on a long line and let the lot go down,pulling the fly line right down into the water and just wait for it to go tight!!!
@knightclan4

We used to do a similar method 40 years ago using a ginked up muddler minnow on the point - you could substitute the boobies for muddlers if boobies are banned where you fish ??
