What has frustrated me with RU-vid videos about fly fishing is they tend to show the fish being caught but don’t show the type or speed of the retrieve. Thank you. Your explanation is pure gold.

Rhys, Again, a fine instructional video. In particular, a great description/explanation of straight line fishing. A bit unclear, however, when you talk about Bung fishing. You say "Don't move the Bung", then you mention a slow figure-of-eight retrieve, and then again you say don't move the Bung. Please clarify. Thank you. Cheers,
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes 3 года назад
Thanks shannon. Predominantly keep it static. When we talk about slow, we're talking snails pace so slower than slow basically. Once you try it, with regularity you'll see how slow i mean. If the bung is displacing water then in my eyes thats often too fast. It should sit as static as a float👍
@shannonyork5300
@shannonyork5300 3 года назад
@@RhysFishes Got it. Do you use the Bung with Loch Style fishing? Or only Bank fishing or when anchored in a boat? If you use it in Loch Style fishing, in order to keep it static I presume you need to actively retrieve enough line to stay in contact with the Bung, but without moving it (albeit the occasional movement to possibly induce attention?)? Again, thank you. Cheers,

Hi Rhys, Great vids, I am an older angler and probably slower to change. I'm having a awful time trying to fish late, dusk to dark. Big rise of fish, big hatches of green head buzzer 10 mm won't take adult, cdc, emerger, or suspender nymph, wild trout lake. Can hear a lot of sips and see many boils but only get the very occasional take. Its a chastening experience. My flies may not be the most exact but in the low light I don't think it should make a big difference 6/8lbs leader. Can you help.

@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Try to ensure that you're leaving enough room between your droppers (5ft is a good starting point). Thereafter it could be a casting issue if your still getting tangles. Try and ensure you let the line completely straighten out on the back cast before moving the rod forward on the forward cast.

Stick to single fly or 2 fly casts until those become comfortable. With a 2 fly cast space 6ft between your flies and fly line. So 12ft in total. Over time you’ll get proficient and be able to fish with 3

Hi Rhys, great video! Managed to catch trout both straight lining and under a bung but couldn’t figure out the difference between two methods as my bung was right at the top of leader. Are the only differences between the two methods that 1) the bung is a bit easier to see than the end of fly line in the ripple and 2) you can fish shallower with the same length leader by setting the bung closer to flies? Seems like we want to fish both methods static and use pretty much the same flies.
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes Год назад
Kind of yes. One fishes vertically and one fishes horizontally so straight lining offers you a little more flexibility in covering different depths quickly. Whereas with the bung your fish at a set specific depth.
@kristoferradzinsh4397

Cheers Rhys! Never actually realised that the presentation under water differs. Thought both of them sort of curl down in an almost vertical line once you let them sink.

Hi Rhys, I’ve just started fly fishing this year and this video is so helpful. Thank you for the tips, can’t wait to try them out. One question though, with the bung, you said don’t move it at all but also to do a slow figure 8 retrieve after letting the flies sink for around 30secs. So I’m not casting out and just leaving it a while? Thanks, Stephen.

Hi mate, mick from Australia, have been using your tactics down here. No luck as yet. However becoming obsessed with these tactics. I know this is not just related to this video. However when using booby flies on a floating line, iv noticed that they do sink after getting wet. Am I meant to be using floatant on them ?. With 2 droppers say below the booby in our spring, should I use buzzers or nymphs ?
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes 2 года назад
They will sink with some water michael. But don't overthink it. Often when the booby is just inches below the surface, the fish will take it with confidence. I never gink the booby/fab when fishing a washing line.
