Do they have to. Clearly they know they weren't gay and they aren't homophobic. To them it's not an insult and they do crazy schticks together that other people in their community college worship them for. They started a "war" with pillows and blanket forts.
Abed canonically grew up with harsh bullying, which is probably why is rarely seen stimming. However, in the freaky Friday episode troy’s impression of him IS stimming. This means that Troy is one of the few people he doesn’t mask around!
Cant get over the moment when it’s announced Troy is leaving to sail the world and abed says his usual ‘cool cool cool’ but then the woman reading the lie detector says ‘that’s a lie’... still almost cried just thinking about it
"You may notice side effects, like a compulsion to come back" is the most love in any line of this show you cannot change my mind (or stop me from crying)
No disrespect meant to either Donald Glover or Danny Pudi, but I don’t think either of them are good enough actors to fake that kind of emotion. That emotion comes from real life friends saying goodbye to each other as they move on from this shared chapter of their life. The two times you really see emotion in Abed’s face are when he says goodbye to Troy and when he says goodbye to Jeff and I choose to believe that each of those were brought on by real life emotions seeping through.
@@russellschwartz9687 Yes but that is acting, it all about Emotions, and Friendship between Cast Members = Emotions = Stronger Connection between Characters = Good Acting and Great Character Delevopment = More loved by the fans = Well you get the point!
@@sophiesmiles5891 yeah that would’ve been so much better, I mean holy shit would it have been ahead of its time, hell it would be ahead if it was made now. But I get it.
Plus he’s giving Troy a big... yeah. I used to think, ‘Abed is to innocent for that stuff’ though, so he and Troy were probably platonic... then Abed and Annie had their long, intimately described seduction of an npc maiden. And like. No, Abed knows what Abed is doing. He’s just not making it open because he knows it would bother Troy, who started with a hypermasculin view of himself
Also, remember the one great episode during the Gas Leak Year was the *Freaky Friday* switch. Watch that again and notice the morning they switch, they both look down at their 🍆 and Abed smiles and Troy frowns. Then when they switch back at the end, they look at their 🍆s again, and this time Abed frowns and Troy smiles and says a soft "YES!"
Platonic or romantic, they are soulmates. It’s very important to show healthy male friendships, but it’s also very important to show healthy mlm relationships. I like how it’s kind of hard to decipher with their relationship. As a member of the lgbtq+ community, I prefer to see them as boyfriends because I don’t think much would change between them if they changed it to a romance. But their friendship is so important so I completely understand why others don’t ship them.
i feel like for both of them, their friendship means they can open up to another person about their deepest secrets, things that even a romantic relationship might not get to without also having friendship; passion can cloud the mind and prevent deep understanding
I think this is the best opinion to have regardless of what you think their relationship is, both deep male friendships and MLM relationships are rarely shown, especially involving an autistic person, so regardless this is a great pairing
Both work well but I also prefer them as a couple since Abed and Jeff are a very sweet and understanding friendship that comes from their deep understanding of each other and similar upbringings.
@@danielled8665 Firstly it was a joke not something that was taken seriously in the show. Second, Film a sex scene as in pretend to have sex not actually have sex. Third, Troy wanted Britta to participate in the sex scene with him but Britta pretended she was busy to Abed.
I think Abed was 100% justified in the way he acted when he found out Britta and Troy were dating I mean how would you feel if someone was trying to steal your man-I mean best friend
If you’ve never had a best friendship like this (or a best friendship like this isn’t culturally acceptable where you are, which is sad) you won’t get it. Especially if you’re not somewhere on the spectrum like Abed probably is. It was a major bummer when my BFF got married. In fact, if it was written as a romance that would have cheapened it, not elevated it. This level of friendship is bigger than romantic relationships.
Actually S4 portrayal is kinda "off-ish" since Abed, in one of his alternate timelines is Troy and Britta being inloved. I don't think he is against it. He's just not sure about Britta as she is the "Wild Card" while Troy, around the group, is an honest guy.
@Melon Sweater I think it’s pretty characteristic of real life though. As a straight male, me and my closest friends make jokes all the time acting like a married couple. Something most are only comfortable with their real homies.
@@legendocampo8009 Exactly! I'm sure most of the people complaining that they're not a couple are women because they just don't get male friendships. Very close male friends always joke about like they're a couple, especially if they're roommates. It's actually more unrealistic if they were a couple because real couples don't act like this. One of them would be the responsible one. Both of them won't act so goofy.
@@thecreamyladThat is the least chaotic thing that happened in greendale if not for the involvement of kids. Which is more of Chang and the dean's fault. Also they were instigated to do it by the dean, vice-dean and Starburns.
half of this comment section is people saying they're just friends and it's good to show young men that it's okay to have a strong and emotional friendship that isn't romantic at all the other half is saying they're definitely a couple and it's sad that the media is too scared to put out lgtq content in fear of being boycotted and in some twisted way i completely agree with both
Idk, I think they're just friends. I'd buy other characters being coded, like Jake from Brooklyn 99, but not Troy and Abed Edit: They would've made a cute couple though
they honestly have way more chemistry then Britta and Jeff Edit: Dang two years later and I’m still getting replies. I’m not taking every single one personally though, however I just want to explain that I made this comment when I was on season one. And I stopped watching when Troy left (can’t remember which season that was)
At the risk of sounding over analytical about a TV show, when I watched I never romanticized Troy and Abed together because their friendship was something you don’t often see depicted in TV and I think it’s important to show young guys a healthy friendship where they feel that their masculinity isn’t challenged by being too close or emotional with another guy.
You’re right, but there also isn’t anything wrong with fans having fun seeing it as something more. Healthy gay male relationships are even more scarce than healthy platonic male relationships in media. Romantic partners are still friends too!
TDIfan10 very true, and thinking of it both ways also allows fans to draw their own representations whether they see a healthy platonic relationship or think it’s a romantic relationship
I mean referring to each other as boyfriend and better-half is kind of trying to depict a romantic image; even though they clearly weren’t romantic LOL.
i love community with all my heart but i was apathetic toward the romances in this show and honestly didn't care about jeffxannie, jeffxbritta, brittaxtroy, or whatever. but if they had written a romance for troy and abed i would have been interested.
Something about Troy's diss to Britta at 8:30 hit different, cus it made me realize that Aben never really dumbed Troy down as a character, he chooses to act "childish" because he has more fun, and Abed taught him to not care what other people think
The moment Troy said "it's cool to know other people think about this stuff too." Is when this dynamic changed forever. I'm so glad that was a gateway for that bromance.
For some reason i cant see them as a couple dating, its either best friends or married old couple. Either way they're soulmates, not neccesarily in a romantic way BUT THEY JUST CLICK U KNOW??
I mean it could be at the very least Heterosexual, Biromantic. Meaning they can love one another, but not be sexually attracted. Love is way more complicated than we think it is.
Sort of like spinsters. They’re just old ladies who never marry and it’s ambiguous as to whether or not they’re a lesbian couple because they’re so close.
@Melon Sweater I can see Abed being Ace most of the time but he does know how to flirt and "Show interest" but a lot of the time its just an act he puts on from a movie.
If community aired on 2018 or 2019 they truly could have been canon. I ship them but at the same time I have to adknowledge that is nice to see two men being friends without toxic masculinity
@Bird They literally say things like "you went crazy ex girlfriend on Abed" "that man is trying to steal your boyfriend" "let's go film the sex scene" and Troy explicitly calls Abed his other half.
@Chance at the same time, men shouldn't really care if people percieve them as gay. women in relationships get misnamed as straight all the time but it doesn't really affect the relationship if you're secure in yourself
@@idontneedaname318 that’s not accurate, people have a right to be considered the sexuality they actually are, gay people wouldn’t enjoy being called straight and vice versa. Doesn’t really apply to this specific case because they’re freaking tv characters and it’s deliberately ambiguous, but in general you shouldn’t assume someone’s sexuality
They were THE most steady couple in any sitcom I've ever seen and there's no excuse for them not being canon. (That being said, I always had huge crushes on both of them and the episode with the librarian was like a fever dream to me)
”It's not a game for me troy, im seeing real lava because you're leaving. It's embarrassing. I don't wanna be crazy, but i am, so... I made a game that made you and everyone else see what i see.” This line never fails to break my heart 16:01
yo "you may notice some side effects, like a compulsion to come back" is the most romantic thing i have ever heard in my LIFE and i NEED a man who will say things like that
I get that close male friendships like this one are really really important to have in tv shows ,,,,,, but maybe just this once can we let friends be boyfriends
One of my favorite things about community is that at the start of the show the pairings were set out to be Troy and Pierce and Jeff and Britta but when real life chemistry started appearing between Danny Pudi and Donald Glover and Joel Mchale and Alison Brie, they allowed those actors to continue to grow that chemistry by putting their characters together, even though that wasn’t what they originally envisioned for the show.
6:08 As much as I love Troy and Abed, Britta's little side step and patiently waiting is like the cutest she's ever been in the show and it makes me feel bad for her in that moment.
I love their relationship (platonic or romantic) so much, being friends with Abed actually gave Troy great character development, he used to be this guy with the facade of being a douchey jock when at heart he’s a genuinely sweet person but he didn’t show it because he was afraid of others view of him but when he becomes friends with Abed he gets to be silly and have real genuine fun and not worry about how the other would judge him, you can actually see Troys change in demeanour as he becomes friends with Abed. And Troy was Abed’s first real friend after growing up being bullied and misunderstood he finally has someone who likes him for him and who he can talk about his interest with, their genuinely my favourite part of the show and they literally make me so happy when I see them on screen together
i know we kind of collectively agree season 4 is trash but that "in my long history of being locked in things, i knew someone would come" is very sweet
i would love more mlm representation, and i do see their chemistry, but i honestly think this friend group works so much freaking better with no romantic relationships. britta x jeff was only compelling before they did it, britta x troy was very forgettable, annie x abed only worked when he was playing a role, and annie x jeff is bad in so many ways. i don’t care what dan harmon says-annie saying she thinks she likes jeff just bc she thinks she can fix him is a lot more realistic than her being in love w/ someone so much older than her. 🤢 i really hope the movie doesn’t focus on romance like at all.
pretty sure dan harmon doesn't say that annie actually is in love with jeff though. she's in love with being loved, and jeff is the coolest guy around. i despise the idea of anniexjeff as a couple, and it always felt to me like this was the message dan harmon was trying to convey, especially in later episodes
if only half of this comments section understood that you can be both best friends and boyfriends with someone 💛 hell, that's my ideal type of relationship
The scene at 15:40 continues with Troy saying "you sure Britta couldn't do this part?" and Abed says no and then Troy sighs and goes "let's go film the sex scene."
@@Brinkaskfavor That *is* the bi flag though right? I mean the colours are there, in slightly different values, but they're in the right order. And I think a lot of people disregard thickness and only focus on the order of the colours presented when making apparel with pride flags. Also even if you havent dated someone of the same gender, it doesnt mean you're heterosexual :)
@@Brinkaskfavor With regards to the show itself, I don't know what's canon and what's not about their sexualities, but don't rule out bisexuality just because they've never been in a homosexual relationship. Anyway that's just *my* opinion, hope you have a nice day :)
@@Brinkaskfavor alright cool, I can see what you mean -- but I like to think that the sweater was a subtle hint. Anyway it's cool that we all interpret things differently, you know? And thanks for not fighting or anything haha :) have a great day
@@Brinkaskfavor yes I know they don’t have any boyfriends in the show, doesn’t mean they’ve had a outside relationship with a guy, they never said abed wasn’t gay, bisexual, or straight, etc. But I respect your opinion this is just mine
@@Brinkaskfavor Bisexuality isn't based if you date a girl, than a guy, then a girl, repeat. You can like a gender more than any other. Anyway they could also be having an amazing friendship which none of us will ever have.
I showed the season 3 episode where they play a video game for Pierce’s inheritance to my grandma because I thought it’s a really good stand-alone and she likes the actor of Gilbert and after the end tag she asked if Troy and abed are gay kgjjfjfjf would have been hilarious if my heart wasn’t also broken lol
my favorite thing is probably the scene in the “therapy” and abed was wearing a hoodie with the bi flag color scheme and he’s sitting between Annie and Troy
Watching this makes me wonder if the writers genuinely wanted to make them a couple, but the higher ups wouldn't allow it, so they made them as cannon as they could without making them cannon.
I wish Troy came back episode 7-8 of season 6 because he was meant to be gone a little over a year and the show felt really empty without troy and abeds friendship + I miss troy and abed in the morning. When troy leaves it doesn't truly feel like an ending to his character and the whole dynamic of the show doesn't feel right
I love everyone's reactions after Troy said he and Abed were moving in together. Annie and Shirley looked like they were waiting for them to come out. Also I love how Jeff insinuated that Troy was the girlfriend in the relationship, even though traditionally, Troy playing sports would make him the 'boyfriend'
