The output wattage is correct and accurate with the dummy load. The high SWR causes the false watt reading. Great video / review of this Surecom SWR device ! I want one :-). Thanks

I have one of these and been using with good results. Put up a new external base antenna today. The SWR was 1.01 and 1.07 at the top of the GMRS channels. So I am very happy with that. While checking the Power wattage using this meter, have you compared the power readings from this meter to another one? The power reading using the dummy load works fine. When I put it on a radio that has a High and Low setting, the high should be 50 watts and the low at 5 watts on my radio GMRS 50X1. The high setting shows 15.5 and the low at 4.9. I can't seem to get the power to read 50 on this meter. The radio screen itself shows it is putting out high power but not sure really what it truly is.
@hamrad88
@hamrad88 3 года назад
I can't remember for sure but it seems like it can only read output power accurately up to 15 watts. My memory ain't what it use to be. LOL

I watched another video that this meter also showed high SWR. Are all the antennas de-tuned, or is the adapters and meter on a rubber duck causing the de-tuning?
@hamrad88

Thank you for this video! If you read the instructions for the sw33 it states that you need to touch the box when testing. It brings it down to 1.01 without touching it it's 1.67. Did you try the same thing? Touching the Box while transmitting?

just got the Mark II of this same model (difference is the Mark II has ONE more mode: ref(lected) power, bottom horizontal segment lights up). I have 3 aftermarket antennas as well as the included antenna for my UV-5RIC (Industry Canada certified). The included antenna is the second version (tapers to the end, not like the first edition that didn't taper and was always reported as being horrible). Testing on the meter showed the included antenna

The manual says you should touch the SW-33 unit when you take a reading. Which you did not. This greatly affects the SWR reading.

The radiated power of the antenna may differ from the power input. With antennas like this, they can get a low swr by making them having a high loss. An extreme example, take a dummy load put a small antenna on it. I will give a low swr a good power input but very radiated power. This is in part how some of the antennas are designed so as not to damage the radio no matter what you do.
@dawndenvercook
@dawndenvercook 3 года назад
As another example. Take a long transmission line to the antenna. make it with a very loose cable. If you look at the SWR going into the cable lt will show a low SWR. No mate what you put as an antenna you will show a low SWR. The outgoing and the reflected wave are attenuated. Low reflected wave = low SWR. This is why scope probes will be 10X to minimize problems of impedance matching.

I'm not sure you need to identify yourself when you use a dummy load, and when I test my equipment, I never bother with identification as most frequencies are unused in my area (Washington, D.C., suburb). I do a lot of scanning and there isn't anyone on the frequencies with the exception of a HAM repeater that's fairly popular. Oh, there are also two things about the SW-102, SW-33 and SW-33Plus. First, all of these meters test crazy high SWRs as is. The new SW-33/+ has three settings: 1) power, 2) SWR, and 3) reflected power. You also have to cup your hand around the meter and the radio when you take the reading. If you take the time to identify, your battery life will suffer. I generally transmit 3-4 seconds using a dummy load and five seconds using an antenna. And all of my Surecom meters test very high on antennas, even with Nagoya antennas! Power readings seem okay some of the time, then inexplicitly comes in very low. I'm hoping the 33+ does a better job. Again, try cupping your hand around the meter when you take your reading. It or may not help.

Yes my tests proved the same or similar results to yours. Basically the standard baofeng antennas are no better than coat hangers, the only usefull part of the frequency for these antennas was in the lower 2M 143 mhz range where i could get the swr down to 1.1- 1.5 apart from that its only good for receive for everything else and even more totally useless in the 430-520 mhz range. The surecom swr meter works ok, more than i can say for the rubbish baofeng antennas, i even tried a longer Nagoya knockoff and that was no better in reception or swr so that got binned straight away.

Thanks for the great review! :) Obviously the antennas are not very efficient. Might make my own by calculating the wave length by 1/4, 1/2 , and / or FULL.... i remember the days of CB (27Mhz), and full wave length for that was 8ft 9inches, if I remember correctly....

Had some interesting results today after ordering a small mag mount from ebay for about $11. Model: UT-106 This little antenna with its tiny 1" mag mount actually surprised me with far better results than the stock baofeng antenna! SWR was down to 1.1 to 1.5 in the upper 150-170 mhz and although not great in the 477mhz range far better than the baofeng antenna. Using the SW33 meter . Although not a coclusive test as it was done under a carport but the results made far better sense than what i got from the baofeng antenna which was all over the place. FWIW :-)

why dummy load is different than original antena? I mean the reading..
@elvinpena8788
@elvinpena8788 3 года назад
in theory the antenna should be 50 ohm to match the 50 ohms resistance the radio requires to be able to transmit max power efficiently out of the antenna. Ohms law...higher resistance means higher impedance to the flow of current thus increasing the SWR. The SWR is the back-flow of energy that was unable to leave the antenna and reflected back into the radio. Usually the problem of the antennas resistance is higher than 50 ohms or its not the right length physically or electrically.
