TRRS 329: CSX Local Y297 Switching Padnos - Rough Industrial Trackage

So maybe it isn't quite a Penn Central mainline, or the Maumee & Western, but CSX's Joe Brown Industrial Lead in Grand Rapids, MI isn't quite the Northeast Corridor. The aging track conditions are evident as Yard Job/Local Y297 switches out Padnos, the only customer on the lead.
The spur dates back over 100 years, and serviced several customers at one point. The industrial area has been picked apart of the last several decades, as the City creeps in that direction, now with GVSU just across the street.
Padnos Iron & Metal occupies the end of track, and even operates their own 45-Tonner locomotive which you can see in Episode 330.
Tonight's Y297 has a cut of "Wheaties" and a Coil Gon for the Grand Rapids Eastern, as well as the gons to be exchanged with Padnos at both their Joe Brown and Fuller Jct facilities.
The Wheaties make for a precarious-looking sight as the cars tilted with the "superelevation" caused by the deteriorating track conditions
Consist:
- CSX 2680 [GP38-2]
- 8 Grain CHs [For King Milling in Lowell on GRE]
- 1 Wire gon [For Lowell]
- 10 Scrap Gons [For Padnos Joe Brown & Fuller 7/3]
Location/Time:
- CSX GRT Sub, Joe Brown Lead, Butterworth St xing, on 4-23-14 from 19:35 to 20:10 EDT
For episode 330 and Padnos' 45-tonner locomotive, see the following link: • TRRS 330: Padnos Iron ...

Excellent camera work. I glad I'm not the only one who enjoys slow speed switching on beat up old track. Thanks!

Greetings from Massachusetts! I love your channel! Keep making more videos! I also like how you are so informative about the trains in the description (train's consist, customers on the line, destination, etc.) I also love watching CSX doing industrial switching. I go to Mansfield, Ma. and often watch them switching customers in the two industrial parks there.

+RazorbackRail Sorry for getting back to your comment so late, but, Yes, I have seen Pan Am before. About two months ago I took a day trip out to Ayer, Ma., which is a busy spot for Pan Am activity. NS owns half the railroad, the southern half, which is in New York, I believe, and the rest of it is independent I believe, the part that goes to Portland, Maine. I have seen videos in which the track condition looks in rather bad shape. The CSX Framingham Sub. that runs from Framingham to Mansfield, Ma, is in horrible condition.

Awesome videos! Love your videos of industrial switching. We have a town in Massachusetts called Mansfield, that also has a lot of customers that CSX serves. Mansfield isn't far from where I live so I often go to watch them. The customers in Mansfield, Ma. are Tighe (boxcar loads, various products), National Lumber (centerbeam loads of lumber), Advance Warehouse (boxcar loads, various products), Milton's Distribution (boxcar loads, various products), Barrett Distribution (boxcar loads, various products), CTX (boxcar loads, various products), Boston Cedar (centerbeam loads of lumber), Miller Recycling (receives empty boxcars, and loads them with recycled paper for export). Miller Recycling is only switched as needed, but the others are regular. B733 is based out of the Walpole, Ma. CSX yard, which is very small. They work during the day, Monday-Friday. Just thought I could make a connection to your area.

Great catch. The spur was never designed to handle the size of cars today. VERY good camera work. This is what i enjoy modeling. OLD RUSTY, CREAKING and interesting spur tracks. 08:25 has what appears to be a transition rail from what appears to be 85 to 100 pound steel.

Fantastic! Very well done and enjoyed thoroughly. Scratches an itch. It seems like there is hardly any of this kind of stuff left in the US.

We’ve got a few lines like this in NJ. One in particular is similar to the track in this video. Only it’s in worse shape and goes on for 23 miles. Some sections are so bad that it’s an honest to god miracle that there’s no derailment each time, and the train sometimes carries flammable goods!! This line is the Conrail Southern Secondary. Look it up and be amazed/horrified at what you see lol.

Seem like old scrap yard hoppers? Those rails look like they need replacing, too. Great video....love the 2 concepts there: One controlled crossing, and the other uncontrolled....supposedly the controlled one is the main line?

What is the yellow box on the conductors chest? It looks like a remote for the engine.

Yes, but it only has NYC reporting marks because when CSX and Norfolk Southern divided Conrail, Conrail's freight equipment was stenciled with NYC or PRR (Pennsylvania Railroad) reporting marks to temporarily distinguish which railroad Conrail's former equipment now belonged to. Cars with NYC reporting marks went to CSX and those with PRR reporting marks went to Norfolk Southern. Norfolk Southern was quick to assign its share of Conrail's equipment with NS reporting marks and numbers while CSX still has a significant amount of cars bearing the NYC reporting marks all these years later.

I Thought I Read In a Rule Book Sumplace (NS I Think)That You Arent Supposed To Hang That Brake Wheel Stick From The Side of Cars...or Lean It Up Agiasnt Things Like Dude Did @ 5:57 ?

Not sure about the specific rules in this case. Part of the reason why I rarely film things like this anymore is so that the crews don't have to be paranoid about their work - their supervisors are always watching and unfortunately guys have gotten into trouble before for conduct shown on videos. I haven't heard of anything coming out of this one, thankfully. These days it doesn't matter since you can no longer use a brake stick on CSX

What was the point of all that shuffling of cars anyway. They didn't look like they accomplished anything other than making noise with the tracks.

Picked up loads, setout empties. The video is only part of the sequence.

Yeah that track ain't the best. Most roads won't put too much cash into old decrepit rail spurs relative to the value of the freight it carries. For example, I guarantee if that same spur served a power plant or a auto assembly plant, the railroads portion of the rail would be in good shape. Nice vids. Most folks don't pay attention to the single car movements of the railroad. Nice job.

+25mfd Interestingly, CSX dropped new welded rail on this spur last fall. I believe it was relay from nearby. They also did more work on this spur. Still a very healthy customer for CSX and GDLK.

+Thornapple River Rail Series Track in this particular setting, which does not allow any drainage, is susceptible to having the ground underneath becoming saturated (;IE, when it rains) and then softened. This then becomes amplified by the constant weight of the rail cars pushing and mushing that overly saturated sub base. Only a matter of tine before weak spots develop. I worked an assignment where we had a scrap yard with rail similar to this only several degrees worse. The old head scrap yard owner who was a penny pinching miser would blame us for the constant derailments which occurred on HIS side of the rail. We would always tell him that we are only responsible for the rail coming from the main line to the outside of the gate. Everything inside the gate is his responsibility. There were spots after it would rain where you couldn't even see the rail. He finally loosened his grip on a few pennies and rehabbed the really bad spots but it was still lacking.

Watching that train with that heavy load move across that old industrial spur is an accident waiting to happen. You not only hear the old ties creaking but the track itself is bending and warping from the loads it must endure. Railroads make money but don’t want to put anything back into their infrastructure.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 6 лет назад
Actually, railroads pour billions into their own infrastructure each year. There's little reason to pave these spurs in cash, because they just don't need it. While it's fun to watch, this spur never saw any derailments. It has, however, since gotten re-lay welded rail as part of a reorganization of the scrap facilities here.
