August 18th, 2014 was the end of the road for yet another group of historic signals. This time, it was CSX’s 1940s era searchlights in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. At 8:00 Eastern Daylight Time, the signal system was suspended so work could begin to remove the old signals and cutover to the new ones, which loomed nearby to the old ones.
We’re at Godfrey Avenue, the west end of the Sunnyside Plant, at the one and only Pere-Marquette Era cantilever signal ever installed in West Michigan. The cantilever, for seventy years, the iron structure kept the EAS for the Main Track in place, vaulting over the Old 17 track.
Watch as signal crews begin working the cutover, and waste little time cutting out the old signal, and get to work removing the iron giant. The entire removal process is here in this 20-minute episode, from cutting the wires, to hooking up the crane and moving it out of the way - it is all here.
While it might be sad to see the old signal gone, it is a sign the railroad is investing in the future. As one can see, it is being replaced by the biggest Signal Cantilever in West Michigan, three signals with three heads each, to guard the next generation of trains as the old one did for the better part of a century.
Credit goes to Gelock Heavy Movers for the crane operations. Based right across the street, they got in and out with this one!
Timeline:
- 8:15 EDT: Okay given to signal crew to foul tracks and begin removing the signal
- 8:17 EDT: The signal goes dark forever, as a worker tears out the wires leading from the control house to the signal
- 9:23 EDT: Crane is hooked up the structure
- 9:28 EDT: Worker lights his torch in preparation to remove the bolts
- 9:34 EDT: All the bolts torched off, the signal leaves its base for good, and is hoisted out of the way.
- 9:39 EDT: The signal is set down on the ground, where crews will torch it into manageable pieces before hauling it off for scrap

Here's something fun to do. Go to Googlemaps and visit this crossing on the street view. Play around a bit with the arrow location and you will actually flip views from pre to post vintage cantilever! very cool. There's even two railroad workers sitting next to the shed, haha. Keeping vigil until it's time for removal!

Did you try asking for a piece of her? Looks like I am gonna have to pay tribute to this signal bridge by visiting its former work site.

Looks like one fellow thought they should save the signal heads... but obviously someone said no. Argh! I kills me to see this history thrown away. Didn't we learn enough from the steam era?

Hate to see history like that disappear, but that's progress.

Man, CSX is doing so much modernization. On CN and CP in Winnipeg we still have lots of searchlights and a couple of cantilevers.

That crane operator was an expert. Did he operate from the cab or with a remote on the ground?

Nice but sad catch. How for was the cantilever from that track?I would have moved to show different perspectives and reveal clearances, etc.

How long ago was this. I grew up off of grandville avenue near Clyde park. From my house I was able to see the old NS Hughart Yard. I would ride my bike as a kid over to the CSX yard in Wyoming and watch the trains do work. Great vid btw

Sad but necessary I suppose... The heart of our city slowly dies in the name of progress.

Wouldn't new signals have to be operational at the same time so there is no lapse in signal info?

Generally, what you're suggested isn't the case. At a specified time, the existing signal system is "suspended", as crews begin to literally rip the old apart. It is at this point that the new signals are turned on (having already been connected for the most part) and testing begins. Generally, some train(s) will be run through the new territory to verify all of the possible line-ups and that everything is working as intended. Then, the signal suspension is dropped and traffic returns to normal. It depends on the size of the project, but this down period generally lasts only a few days.

At around 19:15, the old cantilever is officially retired via radio...

No, just replaced the signals with the new one in the background.

5:26 Dude, about that fall-protection harness you're wearing... it doesn't do you any good if you're not connected to anything! If he were maintaining 100% tie-off, he would have stopped at the top, latched on to the horizontal with the second lanyard then disconnected from the vertical.
