FORT PIEGAN, MONTANA - 23 Jun 2018
Out on BNSF's Northern Transcon, the busy nature of this largely single-tracked railroad leads to a lot of meets, some of them involving more than two trains as dispatchers get creative with what double track there is available.
At the Fort Piegan crossover, two eastbound intermodal trains meet a westbound loaded grain train, all in the span of a few minutes.

Blimey, that track is rough. No wonder they have derailments. Great video...

The track/train system is surprisingly resilient. It may look bad and it probably got attention before too long, but for the most part vertical movements are low-risk, and there wasn't much lateral motion at this location.

Thornapple River Rail Series I live in the Britain and before Retirement worked in a Permanent Way Gang in Devon and we used to pack the Track by Hand, we didn't have the luxury of a Tamper or Stoneblower. We could either pack using a Method called Measured Shovel Packing, or just Shovel Pack. MSP was the best and most accurate Method which I think was developed by the French, and was why the Stoneblower was developed and this removes Ballast Memory, whereas a slack will often return after Tamping, especially if the Formation is poor.

You've managed to show us trains without showing us any graffiti; well done! Oh, there may have been some but I didn't see it. I've often wondered what trains would look like without graffiti. Only in Montana, I guess. Or maybe Utah.

One assumes the 2 intermodals are kept apart by virtue of their different speeds as they proceed from this point - what time elapsed between the two moves?
@thebusterdog6358
@thebusterdog6358 5 лет назад
Probably 10 minutes or so.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries

There are block signals spaced out every 2-3 miles. These display signals the engineers follow to keep the trains apart - usually at least 2-3 blocks for 4-6 miles. While the second intermodal was underway less than two minutes after the first cleared, by the time they we through the crossover and got to the next signal they likely had a clear signal. Then they'd continue on running more or less the same speed as the first train just a short (but regulated and safe!) time behind them.
