OMAHA, NEBRASKA - 02 August, 2019
So the planets aligned, and thus here is my take on 2019's Big Boy Midwest Tour, as they arrive back in Omaha. I could go on, but at this point, doesn't everybody know the tale?
UP 4014 Big Boy at Omaha

- 2 Auxiliary Tenders
- UP 3025 [SD70AH-T4]
- 10 Passenger/Exhibit Cars

That old bridge in the opening shot is one of my favorite places to explore and watch trains from. I actually watched that train go by just about 150 yards east of the end of the bridge just a couple seconds before you saw it on camera. It was a cool sight for sure. If I’d known that it would’ve come across those tracks by the river front I would have surely scurried over there and it would have been fun to watch it come by with you.

My wife and I watched Big Boy heading west through Valley, towards Fremont, when it came through town a few months ago. I tell ya, we were really excited to see such history on the tracks, it was also emotional... Down right cool!

There’s a story behind that. Back in 1941, when UP 4000 was being built, an ALCo workman chalked the words “Big Boy” on the smokebox door. That’s basically how they got their name. They were originally going to be known as Wasatches.

The diesel also provides power, etc. for the wagons behind. In fact, that seems to be its primary purpose. (Big Boy was never equipped for passenger service)

@@jonglass Touche'......excellent! Many, including me, probably looked right past that significant factoid, i.e., Big Boy's original (freight hauling) purpose.

The diesel does not provide head end power for the rail cars. They have generator(s) setup for that. Modem diesel electrics made for freight service are not HEP equipped.

She's technically more powerful then a diesel electric, too. If i understand it correctly. She can move more weight at a higher speed but suffers getting it all moving.

yep, pretty much - drawbar horsepower is higher but tractive effort isn't as good. 4014 does about 6,000 HP at 40ish MPH, but maxes out at 135,000 pound-feet TE roughly. The SD70ACe behind it can do 175,000 continuous and 200,000 starting TE on 4400 HP.

Nice to see the BB, but too bad they were using smokeless coal. I wonder why they always seem to have a diesel assist, too. Maybe to ease the strain on the old girl since she's so delicate?

they drag a diesel along on long trips in case of a break down. dont want to stop traffic on main lines due to an excursion gone wrong.

Mitch J the locomotive is oil fired now rather than coal fired, and the Diesel is there only to act as slave power for the big boy, being that the loco only is hooked on to provide power to the coaches and dynamic breaking, which is something BigBoy does not have
