Ready for an auto lighting retrofit, but don’t know how to seal headlights after installing the new components? Not sure what to use to seal headlights that will last? TRS team member Matt demonstrates how to re-seal headlights with our OCI Butyl Rubber Glue for a perfect moisture-free seal.
******************************
What to Use
To seal headlights back up during a retrofit, it’s important to use the right adhesive. In many cases, the glue that’s already inside the two halves of the headlight housing will do the trick. However, to ensure you get the job done right, TRS offers high-quality resealing glue that’s made of the same stuff that’s used to seal factory headlights.
******************************
How to Seal Headlights
After the restoration of the headlight components is complete, take out your roll of OCI Butyl Rubber Glue and cut two pieces the appropriate length to stretch from one end of the housing to the other. Because the glue is usually thicker than necessary, gently stretch it out to make it thinner as you apply it to the channel. Then reinstall the lens - making sure all the clips are in the correct position - and use pliers to squeeze the two sides together for a tight grip. Throw into the oven at 270° F for seven minutes and follow directions for resealing headlights after baking.

This butyl rubber is also known as a Windshield Kit that was used on older vehicles to hold the windshield in. You can purchase this at most auto parts stores. Just ask for a windshield kit.
@OtherDalfite

If you opened your own headlights, it'd be 7 minutes long, he mentioned the same amount as when you opened them. So, 7 minutes at 270*f

Can you use silicon sealant to glue the headlight/ headlamp ?? Butyl glue is expensive here and i don't need that much
@RetrofitSource
@RetrofitSource 5 лет назад
We would not suggest it due to the gas it can release, and its not as effective. The butyl is cheap, at $17 for a roll...thats very reasonable to avoid the aggravations of doing it wrong. www.theretrofitsource.com/morimoto-retrorubber-butyl-glue-51999.html

Hi. Great video.. I have a question : do we need to clean the "glass" around from its original glue before assembly the two parts?
@RetrofitSource
@RetrofitSource 4 года назад
This is highly debated. Some people prefer to clean the original glue completely before reassembly, Others simply install fresh butyl over the old stuff. It’s a case by case basis I’d say!

@@RetrofitSource thanks for the answer. I'm thinking about not removing anything and putting the new glue only around the cover above the old glue. The other part of the glue on the headlight i pressed it with a screwdriver.. I hope it will fit to close. Will it close?

@@RetrofitSource I'm terrified. But cars heat up pretty hot esp the longer you drive them. They should withhold? Still terrifying cause some ovens temps are diff depending on how old.

only one headlight got moisture creeping in. I did a amber delete mod. I heard to re-seal it with caulk on top of the black stuff. worked fine on the right headlight. but not on the left. I see no openings or anything, yet moisture magically comes into the headlight. They’re reflectors and i plan to upgrade to projector if its not a hack job. was told plug and play

Can a heat gun be used instead of an oven?
@TheKingOfHalo
@TheKingOfHalo 7 лет назад
I used a heat gun to open my fog lights but they're glass so I wasn't worried about melting the lens. A heat gun can melt the plastic lens if you keep it on a certain spot for too long, so make sure to go in a circle pattern and keep the heat gun moving if you use one. I'm retrofitting some mini 7.0's this weekend but I'll be using the oven for my headlights since they're plastic.

Anyone thinking about reusing the old glue don’t do it. Just pay for new glue it’s worth it. I’m sitting here opening my headlight for the third time because I reused the glue and kept getting leaks. Also if you had water in your lights remember to dry out the little piece of foam in there or they’ll fog right up again
@RetrofitSource
@RetrofitSource 5 лет назад
Good information! Generally speaking, you can re-use the glue, but you do need to add some more to keep things water-tight!

Butyl is the worst product I have ever used. Biggest mistake I've made on my car. It just melts into the lens, but won't actually adhere or hold the lens on.
