On a community post, a few weeks ago, I shared a picture of these bulbs, with vintage incandescent. I asked which strand was LED, and which strand was incandescent. I had two replies. Drummerboy's Washers And More was correct, and Isaac24 was incorrect!
Disclaimer: This is an unpaid review, and I purchased them with my own money, for personal use. Also, I will always have vintage incandescent bulbs in my Christmas light display, as they can't be beat as far as looks go.
I first saw these bulbs advertised last year, but they had already sold out before I could order some to test. This year, as soon as I received an email they are available for sale, I immediately ordered some.
A few days later I received the bulbs, and here are my findings.
First off, these are the best attempt yet, at mimicking traditional incandescent. I don't think they will ever be as good, as far as color temperature, but overall, they are good. I never thought I'd say that!
What could be improved?
1. There is a bit of noticeable flicker, when walking by, but looking at them head on, there is none detected, and no resulting eye strain.
2. The red, and orange color, especially red, could be a bit deeper in color, like the old ceramic coated GE bulbs.
3. They are not fully dimmable, and drop out at about 78 volts, compared to vintage incandescent which are fully dimmable down to 20 volts or so. Not a deal breaker by any means though.
What's amazing?
1. They got the green, and blue colors right! First time I've seen it done with LED bulbs.
2. The attention to detail in bulb shape. Modern production C7 bulbs are torpedo shape, not cone shaped like the vintage bulbs. Tru Tone bulbs have more of a cone shape, and I was pleased to see that, upon unboxing.
3. 0.6 watts each, and plenty bright. About 15 watts power consumption per 25 foot strand. Perfect for older homes, with old wiring, like mine.
Overall, I am mighty pleased with these bulbs, and have found places to use them in my 2021 display. I will be reviewing Tru Tone Jewel Tone soon, and they are even better than the Classicolor shown in this video.
