Yeah, I was in school for 21 days and out with trainer for 6 weeks. Not one teacher ever told me to use the trailer offset to your advantage. I learned it my self when I finally got out on my own. Even though my trainer could see I was having trouble with backing. I was fighting the trailer. Whipping the wheel every which way. Now? I hardly move the thing.

I have to say, I really like the way you approach your video's on backing. Great camera angles as in this one from three different perspectives but what really makes you stand out from the rest is your simple and succinct explanations. It's obvious that you have an analytical mind and really know how to get to the nitty-gritty with your explanations. I've been watching the My Trucking Skills channel too but, you have a unique ability to focus in on whatever is the most relevant. I have learned more from you than anyone else. Super appreciate it and please keep those videos coming.👏

I'm definitely starting to see how the steer wheels affect the angle of attack at the kingpin, and how you're using that to steer the trailer. what was once a mystical magic trick to me is starting to look more like a clear and simple series of steps.

I am in TDS school now. Had a really good night last night practicing my dock backing. It just started to click as to where to aim my left rear corner, using a beginning gentle curve. This video, pointing out the gate post and the different entry points, really solidifies what I was doing last night, and it just makes the best sense. I especially like the analogy of pushing a wheelbarrow, that helps a lot too and puts it all together. I appreciate the time and effort put into making these great videos to help students and new drivers. I am looking to more and best wishes to you and yours.

Aside from driving, I use an electric pallet jack all day and it is like backing a miniature truck with an extremely short trailer! Very useful for visualizing paths and practicing setup and angle estimation. I think about your principles every day, but one thing I'm still working on specifically is chasing the trailer, or removing offset. You have mentioned timing before, but have you discovered any consistent laws or things one can look for? I imagine it's probably different for every tractor, trailer, steering wheel, and combination thereof, but I'm always looking for those marginal gains in my backing skills!
@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking 2 года назад
I used one years ago when I delivered milk. Don’t miss that! Lol
@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking 2 года назад
Nothing very concrete. Start earlier and pause by straightening out the steer tires if need be. It takes time to get that down. Sleeper tractors don’t turn as sharply as day cabs and chase slower . Day cabs are slower than yard tractors. Those things turn on a dime.

near 2 years in and i still have no idea what im doing backing. I can get in anywhere but always chase way to late and end up doing 20 pullups lmao haven't hit anything yet tho so theres always that 😅 I try to watch videos like this to learn but iguess im always scared if I chase too early im gona slam into the trailer on my blindside. I probably would have tried to offset blindside into that gate from the road you pulled in on lol seems easier to me /shrug
@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking 2 года назад
It was a dead end street, only one way in...Chase sooner and watch the trailer. Check your setup. Have you watched all my videos in the series? If you have a fear of slamming into the trailer on the blindside if you chase too early then you might be a victim of "The opposite myth". The rear of the trailer will not move to the right if you turn the steering wheel hard left. It's a lie! Watch episode 2.

@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking Год назад
First thing...take a deep breath. Relax and expand your focus. You must have an expanded awareness of your ENTIRE TRAILER...where your TRAILER TIRES ARE ON THE GROUND vs where you need them to be... and HOW YOUR TRACTOR IS INTERACTING WITH THE FRONT OF YOUR TRAILER. Think of the trailer as a rearward facing arrow. WHERE IT IS POINTING is where the trailer tires are currently going. How the TRACTOR INTERACTS WITH THE KINGPIN determines how fast the trailer rotates. The trailer behaves like a long wheelbarrow. Our only connection is at the kingpin. We are moving the front of the trailer and learning to point or aim the trailer precisely where we want it to go. While traveling in reverse, with our hand at the top of the steering wheel, the front of the trailer moves in whatever direction we move our hand. Clockwise moves make the front corners move to the right and vice versa. Good Luck! Check back in and let us know how you are doing.
@Poker_Pirate
@Poker_Pirate 9 месяцев назад
Why didn’t you just left turn into the street across from the entrance so you could just do a simple straight back and make tiny adjustments all the way back into the dock? I watched you drive up onto and over the curb which is something a driver is NOT SUPPOSED TO DO.
@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking 9 месяцев назад
It's a dead end street so you can't approach from the other direction. And the side street is at a 45 degree angle and NOT directly across from the entrance. I explain in the video that I don't advocate running over curbs, but at this place I made an exception and why I did.

Does the setup change with daycab, & sleeper? I ask because you mentioned that you set up a little further to get gradual pathway of the tandems into the "hole"
@AdvancedTruckBacking

Setup will be the same. You will pull up a little farther because of the added length of the sleeper. Pull up until the trailer tires reach your intended entry path.

@AdvancedTruckBacking
@AdvancedTruckBacking 2 года назад
I think its mostly about becoming familiar with the properties of the Offset Law. Try to practice it with your tractor wheels straight. Just observe the entire trailer offset while you do nothing with the steering wheel. When you gain a feel for how long it takes to offset you can then start to speed it up or slow it down with small steering wheel moves.
