As a newly wed, my father in law would take me fishing along the Colorado River for 3 - 4 days with his son and friend and who ever else wanter to tag along. We slept in a large canvas tent and cooked every meal on the fire. When we had enough catfish we would clean them and have them with old fashion potto wedges. It was a great time to be alive. Thanks for stirring those memories and many more.

Being about 15 years older than you, with severe arthritis in the knees and ankles, I can say I really am an 'old school' camper. I can't manage climbing in and out of a rooftop tent and sleeping on the ground is for youngsters, so I compromised with a Kodiak Canvas truck bed tent. Best of both worlds, I think. Room to stand up and move around and my buddy heater keeps it almost too warm. I just wish we had the juniper trees out here along the Idaho/Oregon border. Have to bring our own firewood in most cases. Keep on truckin' Casey! :-)

@@CoyoteWorks01 here’s my wife’s recipe for ribs in the Dutch oven Cut slab of ribs into thirds. Layer in the Dutch oven the first layer of ribs. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, bbq sauce, and sliced onions. Do the same layering with the remaining cuts of ribs, for a total of three layers. Cover. Cook long and slow. Approximately 2 hours at around 250 degrees. Lots of YT videos on how to arrange coals on bottom and top of Dutch oven to regulate desired temp. After 2 hours, remove ribs out of Dutch oven and place on hot grill, add more bbq sauce, and continue cooking on grill for another 10 to 15 minutes, until sauce is glazed. Enjoy!

I actually swapped out from my big buddy to the normal buddy last winter, the big buddy was just too much even for our minus 30 nights lol

Yeah I agree. I’m going to go back to the regualar buddy. The Big Buddy is more than I need for that tent. Cheers!

A wonderful video! It's fun to think about the very tough people out there who originally homesteaded and could not even conceive of you out there 150 years later.... You with your 4wd horseless carriage, your 500 lumen lights using no oil or gas, and your many-megapixel camera recording your entire adventure. I appreciate that you respect their struggles, and give us all a glimpse of what they built with their hands so long ago. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I agree. I think about that stuff all the time when I’m kicking around those old homesteads. We definitely have it easy these days. Cheers!

Love the old school pickup/tent camping. You’re spot on with your pros and cons. A rooftop tent certainly provides greater flexibility and maneuverability for overlanding. To get around the lack of flexibility a ground tent inhibits you with, I’ve camped by rolling out a tarp for ground cover, placed a heavy sleeping bag and sleeping pad on top of that and slept in a second bag. The most comfortable camps I’ve ever used involved a canvas wall tent and a wood stove. These are awesome on late season deer and elk hunts. EDIT: The Winchester’92 really adds an extra cool old school factor!
