Winter Truck Camping Adventure - Sub Freezing Sleeping in a Softopper Truck Bed Canopy ?!?
In this adventure I take the full size GMC Sierra out on an overland style winter truck camping adventure into a remote area of the Oregon High Desert.
Join me for an other old school truck camping adventure with off road exploring, camp cooking, camp set up and my first night sleeping in the Softopper truck bed canopy shell.
On this trip I’m also looking for a couple pieces of lost history. One is the legend of an old silver mine and silver smelter that are in the area that have never been found. The other piece of lost history I’m trying to locate is a section of an old pioneer wagon road.
Hope you all enjoy joining me for the adventure!
Cheers,
Casey

Here's a tip for longer term overlanding, to carry less water; To cut down the amount of water needed to wash dishes, I use a spray bottle with a 1 part Vinegar to 2 parts water mixture. First wipe off the excess food with a paper towel, spritz the dish with the mixture, another paper towel, then 1 more spritz of the mixture, another paper towel and you're done. Way less water ( heavy weight, ) your dishes are germ free and shiny, paper towels are lightweight, a roll or 2 lasts a week or 2, is cheap. And it takes a good bit of water to get the taste of soap off your dishes.

I used to go camping with an old 66 Baja Beetle from 1999-2006. No 4wd, required. Just get out there. You can’t go everywhere a Jeep can, but you do not need one to to just have some fun and that is what is most important. I like to get away from people so I stepped up to a wrangler in 2006 and finally a rubicon in 2015. Now I am getting a little older, roughing it is a little hard on me so I got a pop up trailer and am thinking about trading in my rubi for a gladiator. How you get there doesn’t matter, it’s the time you get to spend out doors.

When I was sleeping under my softopper I used a tri fold mattress about 4in thick and a sleeping bag. The Buddy heater is awesome but definitely too much heat for the space. You'll also get condensation on the roof, I recommend using a spare thin blanket as an extra insulation layer for the roof, also helps stop the condensation dripping on you

Hey Casey, back in the day when I bought my 1978 Chevy with hard shell cap I built storage compartments along side the wheel wells and cut a 3/4 inch piece of ply wood for the center of the bed so I was sleeping on the ripped bed. I covered everything with indoor/outdoor carpet so the storage compartments were quite and so no splinters would happen while getting in and out of the bed. That old truck and myself saw a lot of Arizona but hardly made a scratch in what’s in that state to see. Enjoy your videos and take care.

Love your videos. We’ve been doing trips like this for decades and after sailing it’s our favorite thing to do. We added a winch to our Rubicon a couple years ago and it really gives us piece of mind when we are far off the beaten path. For someone who spends as much time as you do in very remote areas very far from help, you really need winches on those rigs! I think it will give you a bit more confidence to traverse the slop too. That and maybe a rear locker. Our gear and rig was built around the ethos of making it as far into the wilderness as possible and back home again every time.

It isn’t “cheating” to use premade tinder to start your fires. It’s actually smart and prepared. Seems like there is this unspoken bushcraft pressure to go into the woods with just a knife and in one 20 minute video solve all the basic needs problems. Bring the truck. Bring the light. Bring the propane and bring the fire starter. No judgement here man. Just glad you could get out there and enjoy some nature.

The ravioli and meatballs is a great idea! Glad to see you trying out the softopper as a tent, it's short but so convenient for times when the ground is a cold soggy mess. I'll never forget the overnighter we did with the kids a few years ago, it was a glorious early summer day, but turned to torrential rain and wind overnight. We woke up to a little river running through our tent LOL.

Casey - Try to make your own alfredo; WAY better than that store bought stuff! For two people, I use 3Tbs of butter, 3/4cup of heavy cream, salt and pepper to taste, a pinch of nutmeg; melt the butter over low heat, then add the cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, and bring to a quick boil, then simmer until thickened to your liking. You can also add shrimp, chicken, garlic, etc. for a change to your alfredo. :)

@@CoyoteWorks01 I have made it on my Trangia storm cooker with a spirit burner (using the simmer ring.) Key is not to get it too hot, and simmer it slowly until it has the right consistency (for you.) Forgot to add that you will want to fold in some grated Parmiggiano-Reggiano cheese (~1/4 cup) once the noodles are in, and it's off the heat. Bon Appetit! :)

A good move for a camper base foam is a carpet pad and some industrial or indoor out door carpet. Cut the pad and the carpet around the wheel wells so it is all level and easy to sweep out after a trip. It can stay inside always and is a great knee saver when climbing in and out of the bed.

I used to camp with my son, out of my truck .... I had a fiberglass shell on the back .... it had screened side windows, that could be opened. The fiberglass held the heat in pretty well, so I would heat it up before bed time, then just the heat from my son and my breath, seemed to keep it warm (maybe a little body heat). I built frame work around the wheel wells, creating covered cubby holes in front of and behind both wheel wells, and a board against the floor ... lifted up, set on rails, giving a flat area from side to side, atop the wheel wells, giving us plenty of room to lay padding and sleeping bags for the two of us. There wasn't much head room, as the shell was only as tall as the top of the cab .... and it was a small Toyota pickup ... but if we wanted head room, we pull the board down laying it on the bed of the truck. Camped like that with my son, from his age 6-14

Casey that old smelter site would be great to discover mate. Here in Australia in the arid areas you can usually spot them due to the need for lots of water to process ore (i.e. there is usually a dam associated with the site), and if it operated for any period of time, a slag dump and possibly associated tramway or haulway formations to mine sites etc. Great video as always and look forward to your next adventure. I can almost smell the woodsmoke. As for your breakfast meals the biscuits and sausage are just fine but I would add eggs (either scrambled or hard boiled) and some potatoes, the kind that come in a carton, just boil water, let sit, then make hash browns as usual.
