Truck Driving in Mountains...Oversize Load down narrow 11%-13% grade switchbacks

Continuing on from historical Lillooet,BC it's 106km to Gold Bridge driving some very treacherous roads with a multitude of tight radius 10-20kmh blind corners and steep dropoffs with no barriers.
It starts at the beginning of Bridge River Rd., where I had to manouver onto a one lane bridge with less than 6" of clearance on either side, and onwards from here. This is where Bridge River Rd. ends and Carpenter Lake Rd. begins with this test of trucking skills. Look for the pickup coming uphill, you can't see it but the driver's eyes went wide as saucers.-lol
At the bottom of the switchbacks there is a large cave not visible. You can see the cave in the video I took of my drive up this set of switchbacks after I unloaded and was homeward bound. Given the history of the area I would not be surprised to learn it was occupied at one time by early Native Indians.
Also if you zoom out and look at the geographical features I noticed what looks like an extinct volcano and ancient lava flow field.

This is Road 40 leaving lillooet and it's paved for the first while. Then it turns into a dirt road for quite a ways and then it goes back to paved. Then again switches back to dirt and it stays like that until you get to the intersection across the Terzaghi Dam Spillway to go to Seton Portage & Shalath or continue straight ahead it'll take you to Gold Bridge & Braylorne. The dirt road that goes to Seton Portage and several other communities is something else altogether it's 3 kilometers of straight up hill curves and then 3 km very steep going back down and I can't believe they drive semi's on there

Go fig. A Phil that knows his shizzle replying to a Phil that knows his shizzle... Good that you know this road, you're of the few that can say "Damn" because you've driven it. I drove the bucket for the Crane into site. Wide load, about 1.5 inches clearance over the top of the rails on that one-lane bridge coming out of Lillooet. Making the uphill left after the bridge was sketchier than driving over the bridge.

No guardrails, which is normal on back-country roads. The drive in to the site was easy, the road hugs the mountains all the way. It's driving out from the site when the road hugs the cliffs that gave me a couple of...interesting...moments, you REALLY have to watch the rear of the trailer when going through sharp right corners.

Hi brasileiroshelton, it's good to hear from someone just starting their career as a Trucker. For mountain driving I learned by just doing it while being scared sh*tless for 13 hrs at a time as I drove back and forth across the Rockies until I gained the proper technique. Set the brakes every chance you get, go underneath and manually adjust the brakes. Learn how to properly use the trailer brake hand valve,6-8psi, and flip the engine fan over-ride switch on to add resistance on the engine.
@GoDaddioTV
@GoDaddioTV 3 года назад
I learned that trick by fluke, fan came on automatically as I was coming down 97C into Merritt.
@teamdada2194

Never heard of trailer brake trick. Whats your suggestion on using that besides 6-8psi? Apply trailer hand valve a couple seconds before hitting brakes? Or just use trailer brakes slightly every 10 seconds or so?

@@skyblue5509 I'm a Trucker in B.C. and well aware of the dangers of over-heated brakes when driving in the Mountains. Your friend should have stopped, if it burns after he stops so be it. A concrete Hwy Barrier, that goes down the middle of different directions of driving, is a Trucker's friend when need be in the Mountains. You drive the left side of the Truck at a shallow angle into the Barrier to scrub speed off while Emergency Braking and trying to maintain control, it's better than killing yourself or someone else in an incident because a Solenoid failed. Runaway Lanes work also...

@@BigLock_NC13' 6"...You'll hate this height and the fines you'll get if whatever you're driving under is less than that while hauling a Van or Shipping Container. If it's over 13' 6" you'll hate the height and fines if you don't get a Permit first, depending on the oversize height you have to take the specific route on the Permit to get to where you're going in one piece. If you don't know the height of something don't guess, measure it before you go or stop before you drive under it. Get a tool box and carry a tape measure, hammer, socket set, multi-head screw driver, assorted pliers, nails, electrical tape, etc. If you never use it for anything else the electrical tape can be used to make a bandage if you don't have any or forgot to get more for your first aid kit. . Eventually you'll need to cut a belt off that's jammed behind a winch or the winch busted, if you don't have a cutting tool of some type it can really suck not being able to just cut the belt. Sometimes all it takes to fix a "burnt out light" is checking the tines inside the Trailer electrical cord connection and spreading them apart with the right sized flathead screwdriver so they make contact with the plug, sometimes you've got to wiggle the cord before the lights work. Sometimes you need to bungee cord the electrical plug into position after wiggling it to keep the lights working. Carry 10 bungee cords of different lengths, you'll eventually need them for one reason or another and you'll probably lose a few before you need them. Check the brakes every couple of hrs, if you're in the Mountains never roll through a brake check because you just set the brakes at the last one 5 minutes ago. Stop and check them for overheating by feeling how hot each rim is with the back of your bare hand after you check the brakes...you'll know real quick if you were too hard on the brakes If you stop for lunch or coffee and are away from your Truck for more than a few minutes check the 5th wheel when you get back, sometimes the handle gets pulled when you're not looking for "no reason". If it's snowing or freezing drag the brakes while staying on the throttle and heat up the brakes enough to melt any ice buildup on them or your brakes won't initially grab when you really need them to...10psi brake pressure for a few seconds is usually good enough, you'll know really quick if you waited too long to check them When going downhill on a steep grade sometimes flicking on the engine fan override switch is enough resistance on the engine to hold rpms instead of changing to a lower gear. Go slow and get there in one piece, if you have to drive like a bat out of hell or run illegally to get a load on time somewhere phone your Dispatcher and tell them to tell whoever it is that needs to be told you're going to be late gets told...driving a Truck isn't a race Keep your head on a swivel, glance at the mirrors and gauges every 10 seconds or so. Don't turn if your GPS says turn and you're not sure if it is your exit or not, know what the name of the 2-3 exits before yours is before setting out on your trip. If it is your exit just go to the next exit and figure out how to get back on Route from there instead of blindly turning without looking so you don't miss your exit. I could write a novella of Trucking do's and dont's. This should be enough to keep you busy for a while Jay, get a dash cam and show your adventures as a new truck driver on their way to becoming a Trucker. Good luck eh, you'll need it to survive 20yrs in the Trucking Trenches😉

Thanks David. I googled the route the night before, an Atlas would be a bit much to spread across the steering wheel and figure out just where in the heck I was...lol.
