Truck gets stuck under freeway overpass!

This is what happens when you don't pay attention to the road signs! This driver ended up STUCK under the 105 freeway onramp overpass right by Los Angeles International Airport. At first I thought it would be a simple road service call, where letting out some air would allow us to easily back it up; I was wrong.
I underestimated how stuck this was until I tried to winch it back AFTER the tires were deflated using our 16ton medium duty wrecker. This truck did not budge one inch, and instead was sliding back my wrecker. I could have chanced it and ran multiple lines with snatchblocks to get it out, but at this point I decided to just be done with it and use my 50ton rotator aka HULK.
To be safe, I used a snatchblock on my deck winch, which worked perfect. You can hear how hard the pull is as the truck slowly is pulled back. Once we successfully winched it out, Joe put air back in the tires to allow the driver to safely get to his nearby shop.

When your video started I thought 'I would let the air out of the tyres' and then you got there and that is what you did. I'm just a driver of 10 years but not a recovery driver. One time making a delivery to a police station, the police wanted me to drive in to the building instead of parking across the road, so I did try but their building was too low for a Class 4 truck and I hit my top-mounted strobe light. Did not try to drive in any further!

Good job. A suggestion. Be sure any vertical component, to the extraction cable, is always down at where the cable attaches to the stuck vehicle. By that, use pulleys or whatever to be sure you're not tugging the wedged vehicle upwards.

My Dad had MS and they purchased a hella expensive custom 3/4 ton wheelchair lift van with a fiberglass extension roof. One day my Mom takes it on a solo trip to the mall. Ignored the clearance sign and bumper. She was telling the story to the whole family at a holiday gathering like it was something that just passively _happened_ to her. Described the first concrete beam scraping loudly across the roof. I interrupted to ask why she didn't stop, she said "There were cars behind me, I had NO CHOICE." Then the second beam scraping harder and making crunching noises and sprinkling fiberglass dust on her. Then the third beam which BROKE OPEN the fiberglass top and stopped her cold. Then was starting a long narrative about the traffic jam and chaos that started to unfold. I interrupted again to ask "How long till someone had the sense to let air out of the tires?" Oh about 45 minutes later a security guard came and did that... More excruciating details of getting the van out and dealing with the flat tires and it spending almost 3 months in the body shop and the fiberglass roof will never look the same. I broke in one more time to ask, "So NOW do you know the vertical clearance of your van?" She responds in a lilting singsongy voice, "No." As if to say, don't know, not gonna know, not gonna care, why you even asking this question right now?

There are many terrible commercial freight truck drivers in the USA who have CDL's, and lack the ability to speak English, or read English road signs, despite that being a federal law requirement to drive a motored vehicles in America. The problem lies with our governments who give these people CDL's in the first place, and the logistics companies themselves, for hiring incompetent drivers.

Even if the road was 3 inches lower, this guy still would have gotten stuck. It's a 12' max over pass, 100% not meant for commercial trucks. Just over to the side the bridge slopes up and is 12'6", if you're going to risk it at least do it where it's higher

Instead of trying to take the tire valve cores out, get a set of deflators that simply screws onto the stem and depresses the valve core. Amazon has a set made by Lisle that looks very much like the Snap On version, but a lot cheaper- Lisle 19860 Tire Deflator

The LAX area is known for having wrong signage on roads leading to a low underpass. For example the on-ramp to the 405 South at Manchester Ave has two overpasses and roads leading toward the on-ramp warn of the low clearances. But they warn of the height of the 'second' overpass which is a few inches higher than the first one. So even if a driver pays attention to the signs and realizes that he will clear the posted height, those are for the second overpass and the first one he will get to is several inches lower, but no warning signs until you get to the actual overpass itself. And by then it is too late to turn around, unless you want to back up a nearly 1/4 mile long on-ramp. And if a driver trusts the posted signs and does not pay further attention, he will slam into the first overpass, never realizing it was lower than what was posted earlier.

O'Hare towing had a similar job years ago with a trailer. They ended up removing all of the trailer wheels and suspending the trailer between two trucks. This allowed them to drop the trailer all the way down to the wheel hubs. The truck hooked to the front than pulled the trailer and other truck out.

While there are many no-trucks parkways in the New York area overheight mishaps are by far the most common on the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx and Westchester County. This is a lesson to always read bridge signs, they arn't put there just to look pretty, read the signs people, and know the height of your vehicle, otherwise you shouldn't be driving! Also, that trucks horn was getting on my last nerve. I've seen that before on commercial trucks involved in a collision, I wonder if its part of a G-sensor or something?

Just for laughs. 40 years ago I was driving a 26' box truck delivering a full truckload of copiers to a bank whose loading dock was in Underground Atlanta. My co-worker and I were there all day unloading the full load and distributing the copiers throughout the building. Around 4 p.m. we come out crank up the truck and it would not move. We got out looking at the truck to discover it is now pressed tightly against the overhead now that it was empty. SH#& ! So we had to let almost all the air out of all 6 tires, but made it. So, then there we were driving around downtown Atlanta in afternoon traffic trying to find a place to air up the tires. Soon the Cops stopped us and said, " What's wrong with you guys ? Don't you know you've got 6 flat tires ?" So, we told them the story and they led us to a place for air.

A painful lesson that will stick forever. Unfortunately it's usually the insurance companies that determine if a driver stays or goes after a serious accident, even if it wasn't that driver's fault. Some statistic about after the first serious accident, the chances of a second one within a certain amount of time goes way up. Sounds/smells like bull cookies to me, but what do I know? I'm just a dumb truck driver. There is one bridge in Independence, Missouri, on 24 Highway, that gets a lot of them, of all levels of experience. Something about the angle you approach it at, I'm thinking, makes it look tall enough, and by the time you realize it isn't, it's too late. Parallax error, I think they call it (?). The majority of stickers were traveling west to east, it seems. Shows we tend to pay a lot more attention to what is right in front of us than we do to the signs on the side of the road. Chicago used to be notorious for bridges that were posted as higher than they actually were, and probably still is. I heard enough horror stories before I ever went there that I never trusted them. I pissed a lot of locals off, stopping short, getting out and looking, then pulling through at idle in the lowest hole I had ... unless a truck just ahead of me went through without an issue.

Wow, kept looking and expecting the truck to have a GVWR of 26,000 or less which would explain why the driver wasn't paying attention to bridge clearance signs, as trucks with those weight ratings don't require a CDL to operate, so don't have to take a state truck driving test which specifically requires the driver to demonstrate awareness of bridge clearances and to ensure they are noticing signs. However, I saw 33,000 which means ... nope, the trucker whom did this must have at least a Class B CDL to operate it and should very well know better.

Why not remove the rear tires and use the under lift to pull it backwards at a lower height than with the tires/wheels installed?
@morriewyatt6234
@morriewyatt6234 3 года назад
Because the truck had a full load, so the suspension probably had little to no room to compress any further being that the box was wedged under the overpass. It would have made it difficult and dangerous to try and remove the wheels as the would need to jack the axle enough to get the wheels off the lugs/hubs. Removing the tires in situ like that would not have gained them much more clearance than deflating them would give. Then they would need to somehow refit the tires after pulling the truck free. The way they did it, the truck could be driven away, and nobody needed to crawl underneath the truck.

I' m curious, is there anyway to compress the suspension these trucks? With steel springs a rachet strap but air suspension could dump some out too?

Did you try to dump the air bags on the truck before deflating the rear tires?

Gee Jonas, why didn't we think of that lol. First thing we checked for, not all trucks have them. This one did not or we would have saved the time of deflating the tires and did that.

One thing I have done in that situation. the truck had air ride and I adjusted the rod between the valve and axle and dumped the air out of the bags. Then air down the front tires.
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 3 года назад
That only works when it HAS bags. Not every truck has that option, like this one.

Was this an air ride truck? You can loose some height that way. Like you said, I feel sorry for the driver
@PepesTowingService

It was not. That would have been the first thing the driver did before calling or first thing we did on scene.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but for me the worse part to be done of any DIY job is having to do any cleanup and the putting away of all the tools and equipment etc back in their proper place as I have a strict rule in my house whether it be my sons or grandkids is that put away all tools and any thing else where they got them so there won't be a need to look for them when needed although of course I'm a little bit lenient with my grandkids.

Josh, does navigation software have bridge heights listed and can you enter your truck's height into the nav software so that it will warn the driver and give you a different route? Don't be too hard on Joe.

Yes, obviously. I underestimated how stuck it was. I CLEARLY put in massive letters at the 14min mark that I could have used snatchblocks, which would have given me a low pull, but instead decided to use Hulk since I was right there.
@wssides
@wssides 3 года назад
@@PepesTowingService Low pull would just reduce weight on the tow truck tires and let it side easier. Double line doesn't reduce need for traction either but it would have been fast to anchor the wrecker with the big truck.

@@wssides correct, but why go through all that ridiculous extra labor when...... The rotator was right there? I know for a fact if I had done this, I would be getting flamed for taking too long and not using the "big truck"

@@PepesTowingService Low pull so you're not pulling the box up into the bridge. Yes I get there's a lot of force needed, but you're adding even more force needed by pulling up into the bridge. 2 minutes to make life easier. Yes is probably would have needed the Hulk anyway.
