I began my solo exploits in 1974 at the age of 14 along Lake Superior with mixed climbing on ice and bedrock. The usual approach was on wooden skis over snow covered stacked ice shelves resembling small crevasses with snow bridges. Today, at 60, I still solo sheep/goat hunt, BC ski and climb big mountains all over the world. Over the last 46 years I came up with 5 simple rules I live by when solo: 1. See what you are looking at. 2. Hear what you are listening to. 3. Climb half as fast. 4. Think twice as much and 5. NEVER let your desires exceed your capabilities! Be safe! Be smart!

Caroline Kestner, the inherent wisdom of your advice should be recognised and respected by every thinking person that ventures out alone into situations from which return is not always assured! Nowadays there's the ELT/PLB/InReach type devices which may be very useful, however, one needs to survive in order to use such a device, and Caroline's advice is a very good way to do that!

I'm a 64 year old female, very active when younger, now I"m retired and got back into the outdoors 5 years ago. Love your Rules to Live By! I just may borrow and adapt them, if you don't mind? I'm always advising others on your #5 Rule. Recognize your capabilities and limitations. Push them, but recognize them.

I love later in the video when you again talk about doing things alone. I agree. The more time we spend social distancing the more I realize when it is just me I can do things on my own schedule, not worrying about others. It is freeing, rewarding, and a great form of self care.

Great video which brings up a good point. When by yourself, bring safety gear and bring a mindset to keep yourself safe. I used to a lot of solo backpacking in the mountains. There were many times i choose to alter plans to keep myself safe and enjoying solitude while in the back country. Keep safe so you can keep going out on trips and enjoy the world.

I am well into my 60s and I do a lot of long distance backpacking, mountain biking, skiing etc almost all solo. Not because I want to but because most all of my friends have long since stopped said activities. I did break my back five years ago and it was not fun getting out but I did. Life goes on and I am going to live it. Most people who tell you not to go solo are not that active to begin with and don’t have the virus.

Since the dawn of time humans have traveled solo into the Forest , Deserts, Oceans and Mountains and still do , its not extreme just a way of life . most folks don't do this they just sit at home with there laptops with there opinions . I am a back country skier and like going solo all the time out there . A smart thing to do for anyone who travels into the back country is to get some training before hand ..... avalanche , survival , route finding , medical , navigation courses / clinics ..... It takes time but well worth it not just for you but you can help others with these skills too .

Hey buddy just saw your channel today. Love it! I am full timing in a truck camper and also ride sleds. One thing to keep in mind about the avvy bags(I ride with one as well): they dont always work to keep you on top of the snowpack. A kid was buried and died this year with a deployed bag. He was under more than 12 feet of snow. Granted, it was a terrain trap...but still. Very humbling. Also, if you care a lot about the future of our sport, and for any motorized vehicles off road, dont buy products such as Patagonia that willingly advocate for the closure of our forests. Cheers.
@TruckHouseLife
@TruckHouseLife 4 года назад
Thanks man:^) Yep, I don't expect my bag to keep me on top of an avalanche, I just figured it would help. I was caught in a massive one a couple years ago (remote triggered and the entire mountain set off). It was before I had an avy bag and I was able to swim to the top. If it weren't for my experience whitewater kayaking/swimming in whitewater, I feel like I probably would have been at least partially buried, but the avy bag makes me feel a little better/more proactive. The Patagonia jacket is a knockoff from Vietnam made out of basically the same materials for a sweet deal (you can buy them for $15 over there;^)

Bears. People are concerned with going out alone because of bears. They don't wanna be the slowest member of the group.

Wolf's,🐺 in the winter in Alaska. The bears are hybernating, the last wolf I shot was near summit lake off of a glacier, from 450 yards with a Remington 700 300 win. mag. Using match grade ammo. The problem was dragging that beast back across this huge Creek, and skinning that stinking animal out. I usually 🐻 bear hunt in the spring and it was Mr Wolf's unlucky day. LoL👍😂🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺

Going out with others is always best, but often it is a choice between going alone or not going at all. I would rather take the risk than not experience nature because I cannot find anyone to go with me. Large dog, emergency GPS unit, bear mace, someone at home knowing where you are going and being aware and you will be reasonably safe.

Going out solo is extra fun but can be tricky at times. I'm not sure I could do the kind of solo your doing though, But I enjoy watching you take part in it. I'm down here in Augusta ,Ga and the calm waters is my go to....I've been on that river for 3 nights and 4 days to paddle from HWY 301 bridge to River St. in Svannah ,Ga.. Its a trip I'll never forget but these days I usually stick to the day trips when work will let me. Be safe out there!!!!

I'm my opinion, By the law of average, yes, there is more of a risk going out by yourself because there's no one to assist you if you get into trouble. At a minimum effort, you should at least let someone else know what and where you are going. Also, leave a note on your dash with what time you left and a window of time for you to return. Be responsible enough to confirm that you have safely returned so your party will know they don't have to come searching for you and putting others at risk in their efforts. Not knowing is the worst, most helpless feeling a person can experience when someone is missing. It can be simply avoided by responsible communication and a written plan to adhere by. Have fun buddy 😎 you are living the good life that most of us wish we were living. Your videos are truly a inspiration. God bless you, be safe and keep sharing your experiences with us viewers.

Also I’ve ridden turnagain pass (sled side) back in the day (mid 2000’s) back when a lot of people weren’t so worried about avy gear or avy beacons. The last time I went I was coming down the front side everything was good and then out of no where, a crevasse pops up out of no where it was about 10 feet wide and 5 feet long. The speed I was going I couldn’t go around it and I saw it on a short notice so I used my quick judgement and jumped it. I remember jumping over the crevasse and looking down and just seeing a deep black hole. I made it over just fine and it was such an adrenaline rush and I remember just looking back at my tracks and it was such a rad feeling looking at the tracks you just made over a gnarly line over a crevasse. I didn’t have a beacon at the time either. Back then a lot of us weren’t worried about that stuff we didn’t know any better.

Dave Rhodes I’ve lived on four continents, been to a fifth..... the harsh reality is, that when you think you are in the middle of nowhere and there is nobody within hundreds of miles, someone has a shack a half a mile from you and there is someone else camping and/or traveling light a couple hundred yards from you.... the only truly uninhabited and desolate piece of land on this planet is Antarctica and a few islands scattered about in the oceans..... if you don’t believe me, think about the last time you thought you were 100 miles from anyone, google earth that spot and start searching the areas around it, you’re gonna find a few rooftops hidden between some trees....
