You can plan your route down to the Tee and still face an issue like this. Truckers don't always know what the roads look like ahead of them especially if they've never been there. Roads can have detours or something and you may have to alter your route at the last minute. An atlas can't serve you on city streets and even a Rand McNally GPS will send you on some roads that trucks aren't supposed to be on. It's just a computer and it does make mistakes! Some of these comments are pure ignorance!
+thirstyy thristyy How does someone move in on a street like this then? Because that truck says it's a moving truck, or at least it did at one time. And I know that typically the no truck signs don't apply to trucks delivering or picking up from a location on that street/in that neighbourhood.
This happened to me once with my car hauler in san diego CA It feels like shit to be in this kind of trouble while lots of people are angry at you and try to make your day worse because they think you did it on purpose. Thank God I had the help of a very nice and humble american guy from georgia who was in town as a tourist,He did all he could to help me and he he even had a few verbal fights with a few ass holes to defend me and make them see that it was an accident. We couldn't get it out by ourselves even tho we tried for like 3 hrs. Finally the tow truck I had called since the first minute i was stuck got there and he winched me oit in 10 seconds.
The driver was most likely in this city he was not familiar with. I cut the guy some slack. When you drive OTR; you end up in unfamiliar places. So easy to throw criticisms and call the driver "stupid" from your computer. Until your sorry butt has been in that situation and your trying to get a tractor-trailer through unfamiliar streets reading directions given to you by a 19 year old who drives a ford focus then STFU.
you so right My first Yr Solo OTR I had to drive through downtown Cincinnati streets just like that luckily didn't get stuck though nervous as hell the whole time made it though baby. Had to drive on long island to a Michael's store holy shit it was a nightmare but an adventure. People really don't know what its like to drive a truck but they love to tell others how to.
I worked at a car dealership around Atlantic City for years. We had a steep driveway and the car hauler dudes would grind it bad at the hump. The ass end of the trailers would grind on the way out too. I would shoot the drivers a thumbs up and they'd be grinning from ear to ear.
This is a common problem for movers in San Fran , you will experience it at least once , once you learn your way around to the top on streets that don’t crown so sharply onto a Plateau you’ll be good to go
Good to see the keyboard Warrior showing some sympathy especially for mother Truckers put each other down and act like they were never new to trucking their lives
Being a household driver myself, I've been there. Our trailers are incredibly low to the ground so we can pack and stack furniture and boxes to the ceiling. We go in apartment complexes, downtown cities, neighborhoods, everywhere a truck shouldn't be. Everything is an obstacle. Even some railroad crossings can get us caught if not careful. Those boxes underneath house our ramps to walk in the doors or load cars. It happens. I just wanted to clarify what kind of truck this was for all the ignorant comments who have no idea what they are talking about. $500-$800 and he'll be free and on to the next job.
it's like they had a paino In the front or something, that load looks heavy just for a move, coming from a mover....& the company will pay for the fine, that's why every driver is insured so they won't pay dues like this, well that's up here in Boston Ma,who know how it goes around your area
This is why they make shuttle trucks. Also the agency is supposed to send out someone to survey the area to make sure it's ok to maneuver and park a truck and trailor. Bad planning IMO.
So I wonder how do household movers deliver in San Francisco since many streets are like this? Do people just not move to San Francisco or do they have to haul their furniture up the hills on dollies?
I also work for a moving company i was in the same situation in Wisconsin I poured a jug of laundry detergent between the black top and my belly box and was able to back out of it 😆 true story
I did a similar stunt with a moving van at a golf course only I was moving fast enough the trailer belly slid over the top of the little bridge I was going over. helped to there was maybe only a few tons of furniture for the golf clubs bar. Was the first and last time I hauled anything that low before. I agree though, we always seem to have these issues within sight of the delivery or pickup and no broker or dispatcher ever seem to think we need this crucial information.
Take the rod off the suspension leveling valve, lift it all the way up. Once the bags fully inflate, back up. If the trailer is air ride, do the same to it. I have had to do it once doing a residential delivery.
Well first of all that's almost considered as a low-Boy trailer hight to me because it's not the average Drybox night . That's a moving van which is lower than the average drybox and the tire's are small!
All the trucks I drove in Scandinavia could raise the airbags both on trailer and truck and it would clear. Myself got almost stuck in Brooklyn taking the wrong turn. But dont blame the driver. Its challenging to drive in the cities.
he's pulling a moving trailer, so how do some of you know if he's not a block away from his destination? This is just bad luck. He didn't put the angle of the hill there, or construct the trailer.
william mosco Doubt it's bad luck. Real truckers don't have much bad luck or they become dispatchers. Rookie error. He hit it hard enough to get hung up pretty good. A driver would have felt it out slowly and stopped as soon as it scraped bottom. Wait for a cop and get some help backing out. That's how it's done.
Stop when you feel yourself getting hung up. Put it in direct drive and back off a little. Anyone who operates a low trailer (with belly boxes) should know enough to pull out your decking beams and plywood (or blocking) and run your drives, then your rear tandems up on to them. Repeat as needed till you're on level ground. Since you called the wrecker you might as well drop the trailer (use blocks under the landing gear) pull your tractor out let the wrecker hook on to the trailer kingpin then follow him to the closest "flat spot with a coffee shop." Don't get hung up on railroad tracks. Leave the truck and call an UBER.
Disconnect the air suspension levelling rods and manually adjust the valves to inflate the bags to their maximum then drive over, or back off, the high spot. $500.00 winching fee saved. P.S. : Don't forget to reconnect the levelling rods!
Shoooot nowadays there would have been pieces of trailer throughout the whole town or the driver would have been sitting there smoking the tires down to the wire. At least this guy stopped and didn't try to tear his stuff up
when I see a no truck rote sign in California , 13'6 is pretty much good 90% of the time it's for noise ordinance. as a mclane driver, nothing really matters we have 48s. you can fit them anywhere
Everyone makes mistakes I'm sure that your hands and feet don't have holes in them. Sometimes we have to go to some messed up areas or miss a turn and now gotta figure a way out. So as long as you have ""NEVER" made any mistakes then you can say that.
WHY do so many trucks have those low bellies? I have seen a few stuck like that, on in the entrance to a truck stop about 18" higher than the road on a fair gradient
I absolutely hate low-hanging trailers for this very reason. That said, the trucker should have known better. Even a standard trailer's undercarriage would have come close to the ground on that hill.
take the rod loose on your airbags and make sure the brakes are set over inflate the air bags just enough to pick the trailer up a half inch back up to get it off the hill and then drain the bags back down to original ride hight if it doesn't do it ,dothe same to the trailer to get you out of a bind the tools are already there to keep you from getting a raging tow bill ,same thing if u get stuck order a bridge and can't move completely drain the air out of the bags on the tractor and the trailer and usually you can back up to get out or drive all the way throgh to get out most of the time it works been using this method for 43 yrs of driving and idrag double drops and low boys gooseneck trls air bags are our freinds ,,always carry 2 6 inch long 4 by 4s and two 6inch 2by 4s in the side box ,if the trailer falls off the tractor get the frame rails under the trailer use the air to picking up about 2 to3 inches crank the landing gear down let the air out all the way put 2by 4 and the 4 by 4 on the frame rail fill with air crank landing gear down again drain air and repeat again until you can get the 5th wheel ears under the trailer pt the airs under the trailer put air to bags with brakes set pick it up again crank landing gear down then you can back under it and hook it up work smarter not harder you have everything you need to do the job just need the brain capacity to make it work without hurting your self
I suppose this is NYC. What neighborhood is this with that steep incline? Murray Hill? Which street? Below 14th of course but any precisions? Thanks from a former NYer. By the way, nice Art Deco window railings behind the stuck truck.
At 6:49 I thought he was going to ground the rear end backing out! Surprised they winched the truck with pedestrians strolling by. With the load on the cable, if there's any problem which causes it to snap a passer-by could be badly injured, if not killed.
wow just looking at that hill and your trailer would of told you that was not a good idea .......but hey live and learn .....glad to see he got pulled free
maybe if the driver had raise the suspension height on both the trailer and tractor ,"maybe" he had a chance to at least back out and save the tow fee, but I wasn't there and don't know if he tried that. I have helped a couple of drivers in similar situations, that didn't know you could do that,
Well, driver error. Set brakes, get half inch wrench. Get under truck and take air level arm off. Push up and hold it and the truck will jack up 6 inches. Drive over hill and rehook air valve level arm. 10 min max.
Why driver not lifted up truck and trailer? In the EU we just rise pneumatic spring to a level high enough to manoeuver over obstacles and inconsistencies on paved surfaces.
I'm just curious, as a truck driver myself (NOT a computer nerd etc etc) why didn't the driver put his air suspension up ??? Would have saved a lot of money on the towing.
Since this is a drop deck van, couldn't the driver have raised the rear of the trailer to docking height and given himself some extra clearance to possibly drive out of this? Sure he'd be over 13'6" for a bit but as long as there was clearance above he'd be alright. Just asking, I'm not a driver so pardon my ignorance if I missed something.
It's the companies fault. They shouldn't be sending low trailers to any part of downtown San Fransisco. The moving companies also own bobtail trucks for this very reason. Right tool for the right job.
Brittany farrier I appreciate your comments, these people don't know hell about trucking, although driver has to blame himself at end trucking is one of the worst paying job in the country as I did for 5 years, no wonder truck drivers are getting out of it.
A normal trailer would have made it but this bedbugger forgot about the belly boxes. Looks like one of those unmarked, steal your shit, fly by night companies.
Why would anyone (trailer manufacturer) add this to the driver's list of worries? Now in addition to the normal big truck in a city problems, he has to worry about "can I make it over this little rise in the road?"
If you drive for a living, and your dispatch tells you "go downtown San Fran" then you go downtown San Fran! It is absolutely horrifying in a small car, let alone a big rig. My ex and her kids insisted we visit Fishermans Wharf while pulling the 26 foot camp trailer behind my F150 4 door. Key word..."ex".
billdsafdsad It's not like that was in the description or anything. Oh no wait it actually was now that I actually read it. No you don't pronounce read it like that in this case either.
