Truck & Trailer Leases: Lease Through Dealers vs Lease to Purchase Programs Through Carriers

I know yesterday’s video was a source of confusion so hopefully this video can clarify. There are traditional, conventional or operational leases, and then there are Capital or Lease to Own leases. There are also Lease To Purchase programs with carriers. Let’s take a look at all of them.

Been there, done that with lease purchase programs in the past... Got in financial trouble with that with the IRS, and they will tell you to not ever get involved with those programs again because they see truck drivers get into tax trouble on a regular basis... Learned that lesson long time ago...

Yes, I just finished a lease purchase! I can say it was so stressful! I'm running now with no truck payment but other deductions are still the same. I use company accounts with vendors, i.e. t/s, dealers, national accounts. The bill my maintenance account, adding a fee. My truck is a '15 Cascadia it has a million miles plus, so, not salable! Your video should keep younger guys from making my mistake you are awesome, marry me and take me away from this madness!

Dude read my response to Amanda’s video. Western express is one of the major companies NOT to do this with. They simply work the system. Get some experience since am guessing you went through training with them. 6 months find a real truck driving job. You’ll make equivalent or more as a company driver somewhere else than you will as an owner operator with western. They pay poor after you finish their school. Then promise you a regular company drivers (driver at a good company) pay and it looks reasonable to you only because they have kept your point of reference so poor to begin with. It’s their system. You will shoulder the expenses of running they truck. They will keep a lion share of the profits. It’s a con. But it’s part of the structure of the company itself.

Anyone in the trucking industry, either driver, owner operator, dispatch, etc is helping to move the stuff around what is needed but the issue is what if someone doesn't like the present set up as you explained. Means, sometimes people have their own attitudes like the driver may be looking for: it is to lease a truck, not by fixed monthly installments but by paying % out of take home earning. It is very simple and easy but no one tried this way. In other words, if someone makes 4,000 in a week by driving local pick ups that mean 16,000 in a month then you take 25% for equipment (which is truck and trailer in this case) mean you have 4,000 for your truck and trailer payment. In this way the driver has no stress because he is paying 25% from take home and if the truck or trailer broke down then no payment as he has no take home. Or may have a couple of weeks off that means payment relief or no payment for off days or sick time. So, if someone books more money then he may get a very nice and new truck. So, someone has all kinds of freedom while dealers or leasors will make the money they need.

I've seen so many people get screwed on lease purchase programs. When I first started driving I worked as a company driver at a big company that also did lease purchases. I compared my pay to LPs and always made an average of $400 more than them a week. If they pay the truck off in 7 years the truck will be worth about 60k after miles and warranty expired...thats in a good market. $400 a week x 7 years= $145,600. I could buy a brand new truck and they would have an old high mileage truck. The math doesn't add up. The only way I would do a LP is if I was homeless and needed a place to stay while stacking cash on the road....to buy my own truck. If you are wondering why I always made an average of $400 more a week is because they give the company drivers the best loads and I was getting raises and they didn't. They had downtime with negative settlements and i didnt. The plus to being a lease purchase is that you can start an LLC and get funding for your own truck after 2 years of tax records of 100k plus gross. I would also only do a LP from a 3rd party like Excelerate leasing just so I can put the truck on with any carrier i want.

I'm thinking about making the switch to owner-operator I have the cash for financing but I'm a little nervous to make that jump would you suggest that I should take on at lease where I can get hands-on experience such as load boards and what not with out going broke trying to figure it and if so where should I look for a decent company that would off me something like that

@tpnotes
@tpnotes Год назад
Still not accurate. Some lease companies like SFI allow you to take the truck with you to another company but they require a couple of payments in advance since they won't be deducting from your settlement. Also, all leases are expenses for tax purposes because there is no buyout option until that last payment is completed. That's how both of the accountants I've used since 2008 have done it, and that's the right way to do it. You can only depreciate the equipment if you actually own it. There are forms to submit deductions for equipment purchases. The rule about titling varies by state.

@STONEDECISION Год назад
I think you need more in-depth knowledge of the system you are talking about to properly explain it. What you explain is why someone can in fact skate by in a lease purchase program. But what explained is not what happens. It’s more sinister. These are systems designed to fail for the owner operators. Where the expenses of the carrier gets shifted to the drivers. Yet the the profit margins remain with carrier. Sometimes the are upfront about what they are paying is slave labor. Still keeping the profit side of the margins for them selves. Sometimes they promise to pay 80 percent and since there is really no way to check them, only pays about 60 percent. Most the times what you get to take home is equal to or less than company driver on good weeks. But you still have to bear the expenses of bad weeks, breakdown’s, time off, crappy dispatching bad weather etc. But the profit margins always remain with carrier. All this is calculated and done intentionally. That’s why we call lease owner operators glorified company drivers. That’s why the California law was so on point. It forces DRIVERS to become real INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS. NOT GLORIFIED COMPANY DRIVERS. If they are truly independent the can make real choices for themselves. Not the carriers feeding sh*t about the choices the carriers made for them. I enjoyed your videos, but two years in this business coming in the way you did as a carrier don’t really give you the right insights to speak on this subject. This is a problem brewing 20-30 years in the making.
@TruckingMadeSuccessful

I appreciate your comment and insight. Please keep in mind that I try to make my videos concise as this topic in depth could take up hours to discuss.
