The log-truck thing from Final Destination 2 is something my sister has always been nervous about. When she sees a truck like that (which is rare in our country) that scene flashes through her mind. It also flashes through her mind when she hears Highway To Hell because that's the song that plays on the radio right before the big accident happens.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest in the 70s, and the backroads were lousy with log trucks. The biggest problem was that the loads would shift and unbalance the whole rig, causing rollovers. We were taught to give them about 100 yards on the forest roads, particularly when there were turns.

Modern trucks don't have superchargers, however, if they were using some old school two stroke Detroit engines, those have superchargers. Fun fact, the 6-71 and 8-71 used to classify superchargers, comes from the 71 series Detroit and the size of the engine the charger went on. I.E. the 6-71 was on the 6 cylinder 71 series engine.

Old V8 Macks were super charged and the old 2 stoke detroits had a gear driven roots blower with a turbo feeding it.. the 8v92 turbo and off highway loggers had the 12v71 turbo... Also... The square cabs are called cab-overs. They were utilized for hauling more payload by having a shorter wheel base and legally allowing the use of longer A-train trailers, also had the ability for tight maneuvers.. The hay hauling industry benefited the most for this design. They are still the standard design for commercial transport trucks used in europe. Mostly for the ability to navigate the tight roads and hauling more payload in a compact setup.

Yeah that's what I thought, that the force of the impact of the truck landing from that height would basically destroy the whole front end - the entire steering and front suspension collapsed, the chassis bent upwards like a banana, the engine and even cab itself ripped from their mounts. Another thing that's often bugged me about that scene is the windshield that pops out from the bridge jump, then later on when the truck's roof is sheared clean off after passing under the low bridge, it magically reappears and the T1000 pushes out the driver's side to get a clear view

They had a legendary v12 Detroit Diesel. 2stroke, turbocharged AND supercharged. But in show, it ran two big block v8s. Not a diesel. Every car in Fury Road was fully functional. What you see is what it was. No fakery.

Jerry Reed (Cleetus Snow) for the interior shots, they actually put the old Kenworth on a low boy trailer with camera rigs set up and hauled it on the trailer with Jerry Reed sawing back and forth on the steering wheel. They actually had 2 identical KW's used in that movie.

the Detroit diesels, but it wasn't for low rpm, it was because the thing was a 2 stroke and needed the supercharger to have a positive pressure in the air inlet ports so when they opened up the fresh air would push out the old exhaust gas. they had 4 valves per cylinder but they were all exhaust only. fun fact :)

Back in driving school (in 2000 or 2001) we had one guy who was working on his truck driver's license (here in Germany). They showed some content for truckers sometimes in the theory lessons. One that stuck with me was a video of a truck going down an urban curved road with one of those giant concrete sewer pipe segments on a flatbed. He overtook a parked car using the lane for the other direction and then suddenly a car appeared in that lane. He quickly tried to get back to his own lane but the sewer pipe hadn't been secured properly and continued on onto the oncoming car. That video certainly drove the point home that you better make sure your heavy load is secure.

As far as driving underneath a trailer, car would have to be extremely short. Like Lamborghini Huracan short. And even then, probably not. Well it’s ten and a half hours by car, according to Google Maps. Definitely slower by truck but not by much. Assuming you get loaded and have a full Hours of Service clock, you could make it roughly 90% of the way there before running out of time on your first shift, then a ten hour break, then finish the trip in the morning after. So a ten hour run on day one, ten hours of mandatory rest, then maybe 2-3 hours to finish the run. Definitely doable in under 28 hours barring major setbacks. Plus, you got the choice of two routes, either go south to Shreveport first and then run straight over I-20, or go up to Memphis and then come back down from there, they’re both approximately equal time frames.

Back in 2017, I was heading home to Vegas from Long Beach.. on the 210N, at 10:30~11pm.. saw some garbage debris on the left shoulder and spreading into the left lane which I was occupying, so I slowed down and moved towards the middle lane. My wife calmly (thankfully it was calmly) says: "Tree" as we're heading towards what I'm guessing was a fallen Redwood, with branches and everything. The trunk was in the middle lane, and was bigger than our car. We narrowly avoided smashing into it in the darkness; if I wouldn't have dropped my speed because of the debris, we probably would have been killed. Luckily made it through without a scratch on the vehicle.. Fun fact about piss jugs, they're not only a necessity on the road but that have a very practical use in winter weather. I always kept a couple of gallons onboard in the winter. On an icy parking lot, dousing the drive tires with piss can be the difference between getting down the road getting towed out. It doesn't make a huge difference but it can just tip the scales in those edge cases. It's saved by hide more than once. Bleach does the same thing but piss is free (and won't degrade the tires).

@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf Год назад
Yea, whoever said that’s realistic is high. As they said in the video there are metal bars which are a part of the trailer; basically impossble to bend one of them, let alone all of them and even more difficult to straight up break one. And secondly; as you said, they wouldn’t bounce. Got into a discussion about this a while ago and someone said “well yea, but they can slide off” and I told him to go out and find two longs that he can pick up and try to slide them on top of each other then multiply the force you needed to move those by about 10,000 and that’s the force you would need to slide those big ass logs. And it’s correct that chains can break or come loose and you need one for every 10’ of cargo with a minimum of 2… which means if one does break or come loose then you’ve got another one holding everything back. So there’s like 5 full steps of “not gonna happen” lol
@travispoulin252
@travispoulin252 Год назад
It wouldn't have even done that. The truck is carrying 20 logs plus the weight of the truck and not sinking into the asphalt. It would have fallen off and kept sliding down the road at the same speed it was going before falling off. It's more of a hazard to oncoming traffic than the people behind the truck. I had a extention ladder fly off the truck in front of me doing 60mph. It flipped straight up and over and landed right in front of me. I immediately hit the brakes and then let off as I watched watched it slide down the highway for probably an eighth of a mile before slowly coming to a stop in the median. That was like a 30 pound ladder. A 2-ton+ tree would carry much more momentum and slide much farther down the road.
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf Год назад
@@travispoulin252 you’re forgetting about weight distribution and friction. The same reason a fully loaded truck stops faster than an empty one, this log would 100% not slide anywhere close to an 1/8th mile… it wouldn’t slide very far, if at all, just because of how much friction there is with the road’s surface. And since logs are round it’s contact patch with the road would be like an inch or two wide and depending on how it falls it may only be a few inches/feet long as well, combine it with the speed it’s going and that’s it’s relatively hard (compared to wheel’s rubber) it’ll certainly tear tf out of the asphalt, I don’t think it would go in like a spear and embed itself but it would certainly do some damage.

On the Terminator movie, when the truck jumps off the bridge, it lands with all weight on the front axle. The front right wheel has broken tie-rods, likely broke the strut/shock tower, and ripped the gearing off the rack and pinion because you'll see the front right wheel really wanting to take a vacation to the right, and the left tire was straight. In the next scene both front wheels were straight. Multiple trucks were used here.
