Your happiness always brings a smile to my heart. I passed my DOT Physical today, and I am 56 yrs old, and one step closer to deciding where / how / when to go to a CDL school. Always wanted to be a trucker, but families and friends always sneer, mock and cut me down for wanting to be one. I am finally at a point in my life where I can say screw ya'll and I will do what makes me happy. Carry on Shelby.

David, no need to say anything to the naysayers... Just put your Work Boots on & Git-eR-Done! People may be severely jealous that you COULD become successful & deep down they are unhappy to hear about anyone else's potential success OR it could be they are truly scared/worried/concerned for you; either way, once you prove yourself, you'll know who was supportive but scared and who was just jealous. Keep the rubber side down & the shiny side up & enjoy your journey!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@yosemite735 Lol, there are few people that wouldn't happily switch to a 9-5 with equal or better pay if given the opportunity. Not saying those don't exist, but trucking can be hard on your body and your overall time. Kind of explains why the turnover in the industry is so high, and why they're trying so hard to make automated trucks.
@jasb78
@jasb78 4 года назад
My experience over the years: If you get a truck with a bunk that has doors or windows what tends to happen is that as the truck gets older moisture and water will get through the door and window seals. This causes nasty mold growth to form and it's very, very hard to eliminate and is also very unhealthy for you and makes is nearly impossible to sleep in there. Also if the truck gets into a collision this raises issues for how the bunk door or window will fit and seal. No collision repair is 100% perfect. Always go for a truck with no doors or windows in the Bunk. The truck will last longer, be quieter, and hold in the heat and cold much better. Bunk heaters are cheap and you should always have one as a backup to your big engine heat. Electric blankets and Swedish comforters are also nice to stow away for those extra cold days. Always go for the truck with the longest wheelbase you can get away with for the job you are doing. The longer the wheelbase, the less jarring the ride will be. Never skimp on the Air conditioning or fridge. Older drivers, especially males, cannot tolerate the heat or sleep in it. Some drivers need extra storage for medication that has to be kept cool and auxiliary power for CPAP machines. When fitting a truck be careful about gaps where credit cards or phones can fall into. This is for places like the gap between the fridge and the bed. Try to eliminate or fill in those gaps before you leave for a trip. A fuel card could fall in there accidentally and you'll never find it.
@xShifty41
@xShifty41 4 года назад
Jas B. Bunk doors and windows can also be broken in to while sleeping or when the truck is unoccupied. Sometimes a convenience for you is also a convenience for others.

I’m a former truck owner/operator in the ND (Bakken) oilfield. I evolved later into management (Director of Safety) with two different oilfield hauling support entities. Your focus upon the “maintanence” side of truck ownership was SPOT ON! In my safety career alone I conducted, literally, about 3500 “Level 1” (equivalent) inspections- of our lease-on operators tractor/trailers, as well as our own equipment. My attitude was “catch it BEFORE the DOT does”. Ignoring maintenance is one of those manifestations of the old saying, “You can pay me now, or pay me later”. Wow! The things I’ve seen! And... the excuses I’ve heard. Bottom line...? If you cannot afford to, truly (!), take care of your “pet elephant” (my nickname) then get out of the business! Would you EVER fly on an airplane where they routinely cut corners on service and maintenance? Of course not. So don’t operate an 80,000 lb mobile behemoth in traffic without proper care and service either. The risk-vs-reward equation just does not pencil out well in your favor.

You just left out that he went to Princeton University, holds a degree in electrical engineering and computer science, and worked on Wall Street for 8 years. I'd say he might of had a clue as to what he was doing.. but that's just me. Call it a hunch. Scott D made a good point, and I found it neither flawed or ignorant. Trucking is very complicated.. particularly if your an owner operator. Driving the truck is 10% of the job. 49 states, and two countries one can drive to. Taxes, regulations, equipment requirements, and a slew of other things one has to stay on top of to stay above water... Oh, and specialized.. yea, we got that covered too.. Hazardous Materials, including explosives and radioactive waste. Exceptionally large and heavy loads... and that COVID vaccine when it's ready. Anyway, get that glint out of your eye, and learn to be a little cynical. It'll keep you from being a sucker, even when an attractive woman is trying to sell you something.

If you haven't thought of it already. When ordering a Cascadia be sure to get them with a storage access door on the passenger side as well. Especially if it's a team truck. Going into the sleeper and having to lift the bunk to use the storage space on the passengers side is a pain in the but. That passenger side access door is an option. It's not standard. And for appearance sake. A sun visor makes it a truck. :) And thanks for your upbeat personality towards all this. You always have great videos.

I think this video sparks a conversation that could go on for weeks, for example what’s the best eld? What’s the best app to find loads? How do you hook up with larger freight operations to run their trailers? Is it better to run flatbeds, reefers or dryvans? What is the back office of a trucking company like and a day in the life of a load coordinator/scheduler, operations manager. One thing I’d like to see expanded on is how a drivers schedule works as well. What is a 36 hour reset, what can you do with your truck during that time? Do you take it to the beach? To Disney? How do you park a truck / where do you park a truck for those times and how do you go to Walmart to stock up on food while you’re on the road? Other topics like realistic budgeting (financing) for new truckers. Moving from driver to owner operator or leasing from one of the big players. Ideas for miles, but curious and you all do an awesome and enjoyable way of explaining it all.

Claims they had to make it road ready, cost $8,500. Thats BS Just saying

All I have to say is YIKES. If you want to get into this business, you better get behind the wheel yourself... unless you want to go bankrupt. Or you start with a fleet of trucks with happy and reliable drivers behind the wheel. I worked for this kid that bought 2 used trucks, just got into the industry not knowing what he was getting himself into. 3 months later he was DESPERATELY trying to get rid of his trucks on Craigslist. He was in the hole big time. He had to sell his BMW.

Great vid. Solid advice! Here in Holland (EU) we have to take an additional course if we want to start a trucking co, (becoming a driver / operator). You have to take 6 exams; from finance, budgeting to law and regulation in de EU, even some technical stuff you need to know... Friday I’ll take the last two examens. 😅

So Shelby, did I understand you correctly, you are starting your own trucking company ?? if so where is your company going to be located out of. Any idea how many trucks or the freight you will be hauling. I'm sure this is the early stages. At one time you mentioned about moving to the northwest part of country, is that still in the works ??? Sounds like you have some big decisions to make Shelby. Are you starting this business with someone else ?? Hang in there Shelby, stay strong. WE all know you have got a good head on your shoulders and a pretty smile!!! Good luck with your decisions Shelby and we look forward to whatever you give us. As always stay safe Shelby. I almost forgot, your video was excellent, and you were dead on with saying the maintenance is a VERY important part of the program. I have worked in the maintenance field with the military and some civilian over the years. Preventive Maintenance is the key to keeping your trucks on the road, not along side the road. OK, Shelby, You will do good, take care.....

Great video , disc brakes are real important spec , less weight , less inspections , setting up a mandatory safety lane when they come thru the terminal Will help mitigate problems . How are they buying vital fluids on the road , like washer fluid , anti gel , oil etc . There very expensive on the road . I would also put air regulators on all wheel positions , including trailer . Most drivers don’t check air pressure on tires .. how are you going to account for downtime expense for both driver and truck . Have you established a national tire account , like Goodyear , Michelin , Bridgestone ? In Indy there is a 24/7 tire shop , better then a truckstop it’s called pomp’s tire . Do you have a corporate lodging account set up ? How about corporate uber and Lyft accounts to move drivers from airports , breakdowns etc . What eld system are you using .

One thing is for sure starting a trucking company without $ is difficult buying new isn’t an option for most. Renting, leasing, buying a cheap box truck maybe the first step. Maybe even working as a driver to learn the business I’m looking into this as an option to be financially free. Also, get my life back in order it’s never too late it’s a risk but one can’t grow without taking a leap of faith

having a door on the side of your door is a MUST. trust me its worth every penny because when jack the ripper breaks in through your front doors or a engine fire happens you will bless whatever god you pray to for shining his holy light of life on you sure its cheaper to not get one but even a hatch is good enough if you can squeeze out fast and safely get it whatever helps you in an emergency get it if it makes the truck safer get it unless its that bullshit auto lane crap never had a good experience with that but thats just me each to their own but trust me and get a hatch or door plus when its hot its nice to have a hatch more than a door to vent your 18 wheeler out or just cooking in your truck is sooo much nicer with the venting.

Ask them if Freightliner fixed the electrical issue where the radio and the passenger side window controls stop working. Every Freightliner in our fleet has this issue. You have to shut the truck down and turn off the battery switch to reset everything. This happens as often as 3 or 4 times per day and it’s only with the Freightliner.
