Winter Trucking Hazards: How I Ended Up With A Black Eye

The previous night Donner Pass was closed to all truck traffic. So I found a nice place to sleep in one of the PetSmart store docks for the night. (with permission from the store of course). I woke up nice and early grabbed some Starbucks and watched closely the Cal DOT site for updates. At about 5:30AM PT they opened the pass to trucks with the stipulation that you had to follow max chain law.
Knowing this info I changed my clothes and prepared to roll on the ground in the slushy snow and chain my truck appropriately. I also had the foresight to set out a change of clothes because I knew I was going to be super wet and would need them.
Before I even started chaining my truck, my day was going to drastically change. Trucking is not always pretty, and it's definitely not always comfortable and safe, but we can do what we can to make things a little less hazardous. Learning my lesson the hard way.
Please be safe. I wish you all a safe trip.
- Shelby :)

Nothing embarrassing about taking a hit working a rig. Your literally killing it as a young woman in a mens industry. God speed and keep up the positive videos. My dad was a driver for 30yrs. And ive been working towards it myself.

Oh my Shelby! That is one nasty bump 😮 Always get a head injury checked out. As someone who has multiple concussions, I can tell you that symptoms don’t always appear right away. You may think you’re fine initially, but you never want to take any chances. You have a dangerous job and you are in the truck alone. Please see a doctor to be sure you are okay! Prayers for a quick recovery! ❤🙏🏻

I am now 68 years old and retired from trucking in 2005. Did a similar thing chaining and was also over Donna except I hit my jawline and actually broke it and was wired shut for 6 weeks. Your throwing chains is impressive. Take care of yourself and feel better.

Shelby, You can at times (thru the years that I've kind a know you threw YT) be hard on yourself, even in the beginning of this video Dakota was trying to calm you down (yes I know Dakota is a give me attention seeker, but our 4 legged family members know when need Love) You are an amazing person with so much positivity that you try at times too hard on yourself. You should NOT be embarrassed, 1 of your many goals for even having your YT channel was to educate the younger folks and maybe some older 1's, so this is was a teaching moment, and although you got a George Forman shiner, you still look amazing. You and your 4 legged co-driver truckem up safe and as always Keep the rubber side down.

Really glad you are ok. That was a NASTY bump. I have been made fun of for it, but I started wearing a hard hat (a bump cap would probably be better) when I was working around and under the truck for that exact reason. I am a lot taller than you are too so I tend to hit the underside of the trailer a lot more when messing with chains. It has saved my head multiple times. As for the getting those chains tight. Unless you have the hook tool that grabs the hook and pulls it through, it is almost impossible to get them as tight as you want them to be on all the wheels. But one way to get them a bit tighter is to go one hook more or less on the inside and yank like crazy to get a little more to play with on the outside. And a major issue with that type of chain is that even a little bit more wear on one tire than the others means you may not be able to get the same link as on the other tires. Your drive tires wear un evenly because of the scrubbing when you are turning and the different weight distribution between the front and rear drive axles. Unless they are brand new tires, usually the front axle will have a slightly larger tire circumfrence and can make the chains have a difference of anywhere between 1 and 3 links.

Being an old timer ( 36 years out here), it's fun watching a young gal like you busting it as hard as we did back in the day ( well we hit it a little harder running 3 or 4 log books) 😁, but you're doing a great job. That looks very painful! Glad you’re ok. My first time chaining up in Oregon I broke my finger. The pain just made everything more frustrating when I made mistakes of putting my chains on inside out and backwards. They were those crappy cable chains from my company. After I got them all on right, I checked the current chain up order…and they ended it! So I took my chains back off and drove through Deadman Pass. I didn’t realize at the time that I had a hairline fracture in my finger, but it hurt for 2 months!

DAYUM - that head wound swelled up like a puffer fish! That does NOT look like Happiness By The Mile......just sayin. But hey! Who am I to judge....maybe it was a thrill a minute for you! 😉 Didn't realize it would black your eye like that. Did you ever get it checked out? What did they say? "Yep that's a hard lick to the head" or some other brilliant medical diagnosis? And you didn't seem to say how it happened but I'm curious. Maybe you feel kinda silly about how it happened but I hope not. Accidents happen and only prove our imperfect humanness. Here in Europe, every trucker, whether self-employed or not, would have gone straight to the doctor and not only had a comprehensive check-up for free or little money, but as an employee also got as many paid sick days as necessary. But unfortunately, the richest country in the world has a health system that the third world would be ashamed of. Hello just a bit of advice for chains, when using the tire chain bungee place the metal hooks facing OUT since facing IN can rub on the tire wall and there is a higher chance of ruining your tire, this is a bit of old timer advice that i was given when i started driving and since i have seen bungees destroy tarps when you place them facing in i have always followed it when putting chains on.

Shelby, it happens and I’m glad you’re okay although a little bruised and lumped up. Early on in my husband’s career (early 90’s) he somehow managed to hit his head and was literally knocked senseless. He had our young son with him at the time. He was in the middle of nowhere when this happened. My son called the ambulance and I rushed to the both of them as quickly as I could. He was walking around in a fog for about a week. Honestly at a point I thought he may of had permanent damage. Thank Goodness this wasn’t the case. I’m sorry you had to experience this and especially being ALONE!! Let me tell you, you are crushing the trucking game!! You are a better driver than most on the road today!! You know your shi*t and have helped and inspired many young truckers young and old. Shit, you’ve inspired the old dogs as well. Be safe out there. Much love and prayers 💕🙏🏼 April

54 years of "The Hill." Drive to as close to chain control camper as you can. I always find a spot. Wait for one or worse case, be turned back an exit then return to freeway going the way you were and again get as close to control as you can. Take them off soon as you run out of snow and find a big enough spot. Pewag absolutely!!! Cheap cotton gloves inside large(r) rubber gloves. Actual pair of large Loose rain gear is an absolute MUST. $60. Use floor mat to lay on if you must. Lay all 4 or 6 out: move back over them,, fasten using the real chain tightener for extra leverage.... Absolutely never drive with Emergency flashers. They are for emergency... Drivers using them as "Newby Warner's" drive crazy. Enjoy the ride as much as you can. Jim Tennier. Reno. And watch that forehead. So sorry for your trouble on my hill.

Also: possibly most important for chaining at night. An LED Headlight to wear as you play with your chains. Check closely for broken ones and repair them asap.

Did you fall or did a chain hit you? Little confused on how it happened

Yeah I was also wondering how it happened. I see your Disturbed pic, nice, I met them at a signing in London like 15 years ago! 🤘

Fun in the snow! The thing about chaining up is that you always do it in bad weather. Never easy! Winter weather is beautiful, but hazardous. Stay safe!

I try to read all the comments I can. Thank you for commenting and the kind words. It's hard to see the inspiration piece but since many echo your feelings I will assume it's there somewhere. Just trying to figure out life like everyone else.

Why TF do they require you to chain up? There is barely any snow on the ground. JFC in Canada we are flying at 80 km/h in this conditions w/o any chains, some Mississauga missiles even go up to a 100 km/h lol

Feel the pain you're going through. Been there and done that 😵‍💫 You didn't mention if you went to a doctor or not. I do hope so. Any head injury is bad and we tend to self diagnose our mishaps as " I'll be ok" and push on. Been a long time since I watched your videos. Last time I watched you were working for FedEx so I will backtrack to get caught up. Cheers 🍻

Glad i watched it to the end. I gashed my head once putting on a drag chain. Smacked it going under the trailer to the other side..... bled a lot, but didn't hurt much. 73 now and retired, but your vids get me emotional! To a true 'hopeless' truck driver, that spirit never leaves. It shows in you, more than some others. Stay safe!
