Hi Steve, so ready for this with you. I enjoyed this complex first episode especially since coming off of the similar snowy landscape of Murder at the end of the World. I love Jodie Foster and her presence doesn’t disappoint. I’m intrigued for sure. Liz can’t hate the Beatles I mean come on, something happened that’s tied into the song, along with the bear, the murder of Annie, and the spiral. Something is wrong with the mine and it’s all coming to a head maybe. I’m not sure if this is going to be science or supernatural but I’m in.

I liked it but if you watched all the seasons it isn’t as much a mystery as I would like. That said I still liked it. Oddly enough the director came out and said it was getting review bombed which isn’t true and the episode was well received. That gives me pause to think something is coming that will piss viewers off. Either way so far so good Jodie is amazing as always. The characters are kind of meh but I think they tried to introduce to many characters. I would have liked them to focus on the two detectives for this episode. Instead they tried to flesh out a few main characters. There are more episodes so this is a hot take that may be corrected later.

I didnt like how there was too much personal drama, rather than just focusing on the scene of crime and missing workers. While worrying and stressing about it being linked to an old case. Alot of supernatural stuff going on. Seems like they could have saved some of it in a later episode. Why the hell does the cop keep every case files at his house. While with holding them from the detective. Like just frigging give it to her. The son cop, has to steel them tf. The coat in the picture, ok good detective work again save that for the beginning of second episode or something. Why focus on old case. Your looking for like 9 missing dudes. Instead of search party, shes looking at bunch of irrelevant pictures untill she noticed the coat lmao 🤣 like come on man. Im not worried about the old dead girl case at this point, like go find the 9 men who disappeared. Dont thy have k9 dogs there? Like tf kind of low budget police station is it? No k9 huskies or anything to retrace where the men went.

Glad to see you again, a few things.... Im guessing Jodie Fosters kid was killed in a car wreck, DUI, look for the driver to be listening to the beatles. There has been nothing so far to indicate anything super natural. Issa Lopez originally wrote the story with no relationship to the TD universe. The swirl, and other items were added after her story was submitted and accepted. Like the last 3 seasons, the supernatural elements will end up being "gray areas," "haluctinatios" or dreams. The main plot point will be about the magnetic fields shifting and how the magnetic pole moves around in parts of Alaska. This will explain the animals acting weird, the radios and TVs acting strange, and that some people are more sensitive to this than others. It might also explain why there are some "echos" (Travis) of people already gone. Just my thoughts as a guy who has been through 3 seasons of this show and watched people think its going to be Cthulu when it never is, or at least is never clearly defined.

I thought it was really corny and tonally off from what True Detective has been so far. It should have just been a new show called "Night Country" starring Jodie Foster. I dont know why they had to dig up the True Detective name just to tie it to something with a completely different person at the helm and a different tone. Was HBO+Jodie Foster not enough to sell this on its own merit? I was a bit underwhelmed by episode one im not sure I will continue to watch.

Interesting... honestly besides Jodie attempting to save the show, so far I have found the writing and acting unbearable. It feels like Netflix got the rights to True Detective and attempted to make a season. It has nothing to do about the female cast or diversity or any of that stuff people have been scapegoating... i just truly don't think this is on the level of season 1 or even 2 and 3. Plot is disjointed and just doesn't feel right... like the scenes when the son is trying to get the paperwork from his father, like it was so tense for no reason. and if there was a reason they didn't illustrate one well enough. Idk the whole first episode actually felt painful to finish. At the half hour mark I really had to push myself to watch and the last 10 mins I almost didn't make it. I haven't been this disappointed in an HBO show in a while tbh. Ive seen a lot of people on twitter and critic reviewers with the same sentiments but no one on RU-vid today seems to have an issue with it.

Good analysis! Totally agree on all the little clues to future revelations. I disagree about your description of Liz. I think she keeps things under her hat. She doesn't want to give false hope to Navarro regarding the tongue. She investigated the cold case but knew there wasn't enough evidence. Now the tongue may be new evidence so she's moving on it. Liz is more experienced, more cautious bc she knows that is how you need to be in a small town with big divisions. Also, it's women, prounounced Whim-in.
