That shinzen quote is from the dhammapada Better it is to live one day seeing the Deathless than to live a hundred years without ever seeing the Deathless. Better it is to live one day seeing the Supreme Truth than to live a hundred years without ever seeing the Supreme Truth.

This all makes sense to me. Based on this map I would say I spend most of my time in stage 2 when I am in company and most of my time in stage 3 when I am alone. However I can regress to where I am moving between stage 1 and 2 when I am arguing with my wife :). I have experience with non-duality and it happened by accident. The first time it happened I thought I had a seisure or something because it was a drastic shift in perception but I wasn't ready to integrate it into my daily experience so it was fleeting. I remember I was sitting on a train going to work. I don't like the train so I closed my eyes and tried to zone out for a bit until my stop. The trigger for this mini shift was the realisation that the sounds I was hearing all around was the universe talking to and listening to its self. This perceived duality suddenly became a singularity. The universe seemed to be expansive and become contained at the same time, it also became so expansive that it disappeared into nothing. This paradox stalled my brain. That's my best shot at explaining the concept of my memory of that. What I remember the most was the realisation that the universe was talking to its self through the miltitide of forms within my perception before my perception dissolved. For a good few hours after that happened when I was getting off the train and walking into work I felt like everything was happening automatically and effortlessly. There was no effort in my walking around, it was as though the universe was walking itself. It was after this when trying to find out what happened to me that I came across all the spiritual practices and teachers that we follow today. I would say I mostly operate from "stage 2" currently but in order to do this I had to almost push the "standard perception" stage to the limit of suffering until pretty much died. It was like a ritual sacrifice I felt like I had to do however I was semi aware that I was doing it the whole time. Strange.

Hilary Lawson has a metaphysical view that accounts for this kind of openness of interpretation, which is quite impressive to get so close from just pure philosophical contemplation.

At this super-level, one sees exactly HOW one was fooled by Maya. One WANTED to fool oneself, to believe the world was real, but grew tired of playing make-believe. 🙏 This state no longer needs protection, but unbroken allegiance, a refusal to be distracted... a disinterest.

Have you made any other models of stage theory yet as you hinted at in this video. Excellent content.

I saw the video's about big mind, no self and no self/no centre. They really resonate. I'm deep down in the no self fase, but can't take the final leap yet. All my desires has been dropped and all mind identities has been seen through, but i still feel a flickering centre. emptiness is as deep as it gets. Sensations are aware of themselves and desolve themselves and yet i feel its not quite done.

How well do you understand dependent origination? Also, the nature of all phenomena being unsatisfactory is often misunderstood and overlooked. Maybe there is deepening insight for you there. Keep at it :)
@bjorn32231

@@rogerthis i haven't look into dependand origination that much. I thought those insights will automatically come with the final shift. I know that the understanding that awareness and content are one is crucial. I feel like sensations are aware of themselves, but ofcourse that can be interpreted differently. And about the unsattisfactory nature of all phenomena, I noticed that i still have a slight prefrence to be in my own peace, instead of being fully engaged in the world like people in next stage. Gonna play with those two :) Thankyou!

Great video series, very clear. How did you effect the final dissolution of self (the center "popping out of existence" in 2021). Could you give us an idea of how you were practicing at the time? What would you recommend to others who may be approaching this stage?

Good stuff as always! The phenomenological language is getter more precise and easier to align with over time through essays like yours. I think it’s important to flush out the phenomenal descriptors for how it feels to experience specific phenomenon through each of these stages, like if it’s truly impossible to experience PTSD again, or if we can track the speed at which cortisol levels decline after a cortisol injection at each level, or that sleep deprivation has a different neural signature at each stage, then that would advance the science and give greater medical impetus behind scaling meditation practices specifically aimed at these attainments in the most efficient way for those in dire need (or for training the next generation of super performative soldiers? Does testosterone injection have a markably different effect on those at different stages that we can measure?)

how have your cognitive abilities been impacted by enlightenment? by cognitive abilities, I mean things like working memory, processing speed; visuo-spatial and verbal abilities.

So if you don’t have a desire to live, what would motivate you to get a job or go to college, or get out of bed in the morning. Desire is action. I’ve had many nondual glimpses, didn’t make a final shift. But I found that it leaves you hopeless. I mean your so immersed in the present you can’t even conceive of the future. Useful if your a monk but pretty detrimental if you’ve got a job or your a parent or pretty much anything else. It’s like devolving back into an infant state. It also makes a lot of things impossible, for example driving, or reading which requires your attention. If your in this defocused state where sounds aren’t heard to be coming from any paticular place. Than driving down the freeway is impossible. The filters of the mind are pretty useful for navigating life, I don’t know if it’s something to get rid of.
