Great stuff. I use Sam Harris' Waking Up app and he often instructs you to turn attention upon itself, but never explains how. Thanks for clearing up for me.
Had a weird moment where I felt attention “rolling” is the best way I can describe it. Like rolling up a paper fast. Is that anywhere close to what should’ve happened? Can’t get it to happen again yet just 2 or 3 times.
No shoulds or shouldn'ts when it comes to your experience. It was probably the unfurling of a stored tension point trying to sort it self out. I wouldn't try to make it happen. Keep exploring, keep feeling. All kinds of weird sensations can occur, don't get attached to them.
Great video, I will practice looking for sensations that correlate to the visual field. One thing that always confuses me though, is I don't understand how one such as yourself can come to any conclusions about what all this practice means. For instance, you say that you can realize that the visual field is all your body. Isn't that another thought overlay?
I love the question. I don't know what it all means. We can explore states of mind, garner insight into how this whole experience can construe itself, find common connections, and become wise to seemingly universal properties of all phenomena, which in turn cause one to suffer way, way less in life. Slowly this things wakes up to itself and recognise what life is. To 'get it', without getting anything.
I had a spontaneous experience something like this just a few days ago, completely unprompted. It was actually quite annoying to realize that attention was non-local to my body, because suddenly my body lacked any sense of solidity. It was like I was suddenly lighter than air. I kept turning my attention back on itself and trying to locate its source, but couldn't ground it in my head, brain, nervous system etc. because I already "knew" it wasn't located anywhere in there. It was as if the entire screen of consciousness had revealed itself to be quite flimsy and illusory, and there wasn't really anything I could do about it except accept it and go distract myself with something else.
What is happening for me is that it is becoming clear that all these points are just sensations and then it becomes more of a wider area further back and not a point.

Both! I recommend facing all kinds of different directions. Let the stream flow through you from different angles so you understand where there may still be solidity.

Very helpful to put in the lexicon! Especially, because it related only to perception, which is kind of reducing the sense of self to nothing but a sense again. Can you explain why you've called it the axial aspect?
It's the central revolving, pivotally, aligning feature of one's conscious experience and simply I wanted another word beginning with 'A' to fit with the rest 😆(attention, awareness, amodal).
9:08 wouldn't you say it's that our ability of perceiving information 'lessens' not that information content gets smaller? and the ability can be developed? your intention is great
You could though quite arguably there is no information if it is not perceived, in that information is a mind dependent construct and so no perception, no mind = no information. But I catch your point.
Helping people to communicate with others about their deeper experiences is a great aim and I hope it goes well. There is something about the phrase 'axial aspect' that I suspect might limit its use more to the philosophers and spiritual theorists, but we'll see. Thank you for putting out all your good work anyway.
I’ve got autism and pretty significant synesthesia, so I already was aware that I physically feel the tactile sensory input of visual and auditory stimuli. It’s extremely overwhelming. All my memories have sensory attachments that are blurred and melted. I can’t even describe it adequately.
This is incredibly useful! Feels like finally I can have some reference for my current place on the path now and see there is so much more to come and explore. <3
It's essentially the feature of experience that is perceived as one's core essence, in a fairly stable manner. If you go on my site, on the media page I have more graphs and explanations on it. But I should make a video going more in depth.
thankyou, i loved watching this. it feels like there should be super easy shortcuts to realising (or porting over to) being an originless affine space. theres got to be some metronomic way in which the senses and informational content are interpolating each other that can be found in physically modulatable areas, direct or indirectly. some ideas: - has anyone tried to assign distinct metronomes to each sense that syncs up over time? fourier decompose, recompose kindof thing for the sensorium, maybe throw in some BDNF and blissdrugs in the mix? - do CIPA patients experience expansion and contraction the same way, maybe some avenue there? - haptic technology that expedites the axial aspect shifting by pushing on different areas while the user centres on said area that gradually morphs to multiple areas, all areas, no area.
when people talk about infinite consciousness they don't mean it numerically(because infinity isn't a numeric thing). what they mean is there is absolutely mental division between things and no beginning or end can be found.

Awesome video, Roger! Could the axial aspect of the world simulation be related to momentum, angular momentum, and mass? Its as if the internal representation can have these properties and as a whole result in a global simulation-wide interlock of intertia, like a gyroscope.
That's a very cool way to think about it. I believe I can envision what you mean. Makes me think of Jupiter's giant storm that has been swirling for at least 150 years and how it takes many life times for people's internal gyroscope to slow down and bottom out. Actually, Saturn's hexagonal poles is probably more a more apt analogy 🤔
They're all within higher levels (than the earlier jhana states) of abstraction/fabrication that can do more complex world/entity modelling. Very rare to experience such figures in the jhanas, unless you do some sophisticated orthogonal moves and enter pure land jhana territory - like getting 4th jhana and then evoking and engendering the archetype of the buddha, for example. Dmt, I would argues, actually hyper fabricates one's experience (so extending my diagram more to the right), which is quite the inverse of 5-meo-dmt.
If you want to penetrate fully the mystery of christ i highly recomend the works of bernedette roberts. She was a christian mystic who wrote extensively on no-self, the territory beyond (death, ressuruction, ascension, incarnatation) and gods manifest revelation to us of this ultimate Truth through and as the person Jesus Christ. I have a very estimation of christianity, the danger is falling into a jesus christ. What is self? Is a fantastic, comprehensive and relativley simple presentation of what i see to be the core of her work
Where I dont follow you is with weather there are already sensations across the whole body and you just imagine they are created by visual objects or if they are actually created. And where does this approach lead to insight, isn't there a "me" doing the scanning and being in the receiving end of this observation?
I practice sometimes guided meditations from RU-vid and my purpose is to have a day nap , i breath deeply following all of what guided voice says and after 30 minutes i find that my mind and body starts to relqx ease and let go , from overthinking mind switch to pause mode of subcouncsious with so little uncontroled thoughts , even sometimes i hear myself snoring but i cant go more than this level 1 of sleep, i cant fall to unconscouis state of nap sleep with these practice . I feel very light mind relaxed and beneficial after these meditations but simply not what i want and thats a nap I dont know What i do wrong ? Is There any trick ?
I knew this when a teenager. Not easy doing something that did not exist with people who had no idea that they had no idea. Asleep in an abyss. . In time the role of the observer was appreciated and much later the ineffable Witness was inferred and then glimpsed as what I and all else was.. I think Castaneda refers to this as well as the three Attentions which are personalised aspects of Awareness. Pure Awareness remains an ever present mystery. Some say it can be seen as an aspect of Consciousness, the primal substance which humans can have a non mechanical access to. Some say the reverse. What a great discovery awaits. Purification and release of the familiar conceptual reality must first be transversed in what is quite a journey into and through the timeless all the while whilst donning a mortal form. It is a never ending journey into the more and more subtle world of Glories that lie beyond words
Thanks for the great content. I had a first awakening shift last year, and since then I've had phases of consciousness expansion that lead again into contraction. The cycles can last a few days to a few weeks, where the notion of a self becomes a lot weaker, almost dispelled, and then grows stronger again. Can you make a video around this expansion and contraction situation please?
If my memory is correct, it has been shown that people who have very limited experience using vision (like newborns and the previously blind) can correctly associate the visual appearance of something with its physical shape - even though they don't have experience of touching that object before. It does seem that you're right that we phenomenologically feel things we see, in a way - like a prediction of what it would feel like to touch them.
