I mean, it's a joke though. I've heard David say worse things himself so I'm sure he can take it. Some people seems to take this show far more personally than any of the people involved ever would. It's pretty funny actually that they don't even realise Rob and David are acting in the things like the pen clip and the royal wedding one. I'm guessing people who make these comments aren't British lmao.

Honestly nothing she said is that much meaner than things Lee has said to David in the past, but since it is known that David and Lee have been (presumably) friends for years, it just seems to come from nowhere. I think Anna probably watched what Lee and Rob had been doing to David for years, tried to replicate it, and it backfired terribly because, honestly, who the hell is she? Your friends are allowed to riff on you like that, but not strangers. Then again, if it turned out Anna and David were friends in real life, that changes the tone for everything again.

Yeah Clare Balding is much the same, they see the dynamic of the show which is full of sarcastic but fundamentally friendly teasing between David, Lee and Rob (and other comedians who all know each other) but they can’t pull it off so just sound like horrible people.

I’m a touch more sympathetic now that I’ve actually been to a live recording, and also seen Motherland. Their conversations can go on for a while, and a lot of it is cut. So there’s a possibility we’re missing a little bit of content that balances her out. Also, Anna is more of a comedy actor than a comedian - she knows how to give a funny performance, but doesn’t seem to have the knack for being funny in her own right. If they’d given her a script and told her to act like Julia in Motherland, she’d easily have been the standout.

I’m American so I don’t know the name of the lady on Lee’s team (and don’t really care to learn it). Lee can pick on David in a way that nobody else can bc he understands which things will set him off. I admire David’s ability to in subtext go….”that’s why I picked Victoria and not you bc she’s not so concerned with bravado and this false machismo bs.” Made me respect David more and really understand what Victoria puts up with and still chooses to be with David after…it gives me hope dammit!!

The Anna girl who made that comment about him not being a man of this is true, that wasn’t funny at all. Just uncomfortably insulting in a serious kind of manner. You could see David wasn’t sure about it either. It was also insulting to David’s wife as well. No self respecting man would want to date someone who thinks in that kind of disqualifying manner.

Yeah, I too would totally lose all respect for someone who displays any fear of handling a massive bird of prey with a potential wingspan of an average persons height, that has powerful talons capable of causing grievous injury. I get that it’s a joke, but it’s just got a really poor foundation. I’d wager that a lot of people would be very reasonably reluctant to handle even a tamed apex predator. It makes more sense to be frightened by an owl than a goddamn goliath birdeating tarantula.

I don't understand why everyone's having a go at Anna. Is it because everyone's so used to her being a horrible person as Carmichael in Line of Duty? Is it just sexism? Stuff like this happens on WILTY a lot, not as much as there was in this series I grant you, but it's not an unusual occurrence.

Anna Maxwell Martin is an absolute treasure, one of the best actors of her generation and a skilled comic actor who's given numerous excellent performances on screen and stage over the years, I can't believe so many comments are slagging her off. It's prime time television, you don't have long to make your mark on a panel show like this, especially in the company of seasoned panellists like Mitchell, Mack and Brydon, and I'd like to see the misogynist little trolls try and make an impression on a show like this. They'd fall flat on their faces.

Everybody hating on the woman in the comments, I thought it was hilarious and caused great banter, David, Lee and Rob are amazing and taking that kind of comedy and running with it. And she was obviously not serious to anyone thinking she was rude or awful, they were all laughing with it.

Well one problem with it is that it didn't come across as good natured. Not to most of us, at least. And another is that she mixed masculinity into it, potentially insulting just about everyone. "Men don't get to be scared and flee" isn't an endearing hot-take to most of us. It's also not ridiculous enough to be harmless; it's a real-life opinion that awful people hold.

I think that is overreaction and counterproductive if you want to be fair and point out that she perhaps didn't think through bringing masculinity into. Although masculinity or macho type jokes have been thrown around before in jest, but the point clearly being emphasized more clearly as a joke. I think it's fair to call her out on that without ascribing her as an awful human being

Stop assuming and face the reality. David was visibly taken a back by that Anna's comments but he kept on trying to keep a smily face. Even Rob realised it. There's banter and then there's toxic sexist insulting comments. Not only she insulted David but his wife Victoria too. It's his modesty and sense of humour that helped those comments to go under the radar. Who the hell is she to insult Dave and his wife?

Exactly. He took it well because he's dignified and composed. Even if she didn't mean to be cruel, her lame attempt to be edgy via shock humour still stings for no good reason, and isn't even funny. You could see the contempt in her eyes. It was weird to watch.

@@aami1985 "Even Rob realised it"... he was clearly just joking to keep the bit going as a joke lol. Just like how David has said he thinks Rob's impression of him isn't good but they still do it for a joke. David, Rob and Lee are comedians and close friends. They know how to create comedy "bits" and run with it, and they know each other's comedy to make it work. Rob and Lee were just setting David up for his part in the joke. You can argue her bit wasn't funny, but David was not there crying on the inside like the comments seem to be suggesting.

Nobody thinks David was crying on the inside..just that he had to work hard to smooth over her awkward contributions. You could put any weirdo on stage with these comedians and they'll manage to find laughs out of it, but some interactions are still more inappropriate and less funny.

If it was a joke it was a bad one, where lack of wit is poorly disguised by an attempt to be edgy via cheap shock humour, probably because she was out of her depth and overcompensated. Whether she intended it ironically or not, it was unduly harsh, and the fact that David took it as a joke says more about his composure as an accomplished comedian and dignified man of wit than it does about her banter skills.

I reckon it has to do with them all being separated because of this new 'social distancing' format. They're all disconnected from eachother, all eyes and cameras are suddenly turned towards her rather than the team. I imagine people wouldn't have received it quite so sourly if they were all sitting side by side as usual.
