@@vzuzukin Lenovo is hot stuff right now, they’ve been tempting me for many nights now, so many hours of sleep lost, almost took the hook last night but was so tired I fell asleep. Just as well as this morning I discovered the AMD version is finally available. Pleasure overload baby sexy stuff yeah baby yeah
That's great , I'm upgrading the memory and storage , so I'd appreciate if you confirm that the crucial ddr5 5600 modules are compatible ( they had problems with 2022 model), and would know if you'd recommend swapping the 1tb for a 2tb crucial p5 , or just add a 1tb one ? Appreciate your advice🙏
@@abzeed the included drive is a 980 pro OEM. This is a better drive than the p5. Use the p5 as a second drive and keep the original ad your windows drive 👍
@@TechGuyBeau I changed my mind and got a samsung 980 pro to keep the stock one company 😄 . Thank you very much for the prompt reply bro, appreciate it🙏
This review is epic! The BG3/CP testing in different fan profiles was way more useful than most other reviewers showing rasterized performance charts. I just ordered a Legion 5 Pro AMD with a 4070 and I'm planning on playing BG3 on there. I'm definitely going to test out silent mode + DLSS.
I agree. Bar charts don’t show you how a game actually runs. Not that useful for a user in my opinion. I have some gaming videos coming for this laptop. At least 2 vidoes
@@TechGuyBeau they also don't take into account real world use and things that actually make gaming on a laptop more pleasurable (less noise, less heat).
Very useful. thanks for for this, i prefer a quiet computer whenever possible, and try cap my fps on my desktop so the fans and card stay silent 60-100fps depending on game (running on a super ultrawide so can be demanding). Also the battery life depending on use is good to know, thanks again. Sadly Startfield(on desktop with a 7900xt) is not one of the games where even capping at 60 makes it stay silent.
Love the way you cover every nuance of this laptop. Has RAM upgradeability, all metal supreme build quality, lovely 16:10 matte screen (hate reflections personally), excellent keyboard and trackpad, all the ports you need, fantastic thermals and for someone who really cares about battery life whilst retaining the ability to game AAA titles near silently at respectable frame rates, it's hard to find a flaw. Laptop of the year for me. Wish this launches in India soon.
@@sameerparihar4350 Not a clue thus far. If it does, as a value proposition, this needs to be priced in the vicinity of 1.3L INR, esp with a surfeit of capable previous gen Legions now selling below 1.1L. There's competition from laptops with 2K and 3.2K OLED screens with 100% DCI P3 color gamut in the sub 1L price bracket esp from Asus.
Just found your channel yesterday. I've been trying to research myself as I desperately need a new laptop but its giving me an absolute migraine with all the conflicting information I've found. I've gotta say your channel is AWESOME. The way you give unbiased opinions and actually test all the different aspects of the laptop, really showing the ins and outs of its performance is super helpful. Keep doing what you're doing!!!
Thanks dude. I’ve been getting a LOT of requests. I’m going to do some dedicated gaming videos now (external game capture) I have 12 games already lined up
Super happy to see In-depth. I've been laptop hunting for a month now and it has been so hard to find details on upgradability/reparability, so thank you very much for going over these details.
Your channel is epic. I think yours and Jarrod's video completely details out everything that a consumer needs to know to make a informed purchase. Thanks and wish you all the success!
You tested dual-sided nvme in each m.2 so clearly, well done! Great details. The one thing I don't see others do is to confirm if USB4 ports support eGPU so you can use a video card with 16-24GB at home/office in eGPU enclosure.
Just got mine two days ago. Way better compared to intel version (13700H, 4060) which I also have. Browsing/watching youtube I am getting 10-12hrs. Design work (autocad, sketchup) I am getting 6-7hrs. Overall very impressed with built quality, battery life and performance.
Just got the Slim 7 with Ryzen 7, 4060, 32GB ram, 1TB ssd and 3.2k screen. Its absolutely beautiful and I'm loving it so far. Thanks for the reviews and answers :)
Amazing laptop, thanks for being one of the first to review it. I think this is it and ill pull the trigger once it goes on sale like its Intel counterpart. A brilliant piece of machinery that serves portability, design and function in one package
Wanted to thank you for your excellent and detailed review. I've had my Legion Slim 7 for 5 weeks now and it is incredibly impressive. Quiet even when gaming. Beautiful screen. Great in productivity. Honestly the best gaming laptop I've ever bought! (I've owned many over the last 15 years). Cheers!
I have the exact same machine with 32gb of ram , 3,2k screen and I added a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro as the second NVME to my windows 1TB SSD which is SanDisk (WD PC SN810 SDCPNRY-1T00-1101) , I'm loving it too much , it is a beast of computer and I love so much the 3,2K screen , it is beautiful , amazing colors , sharp images , clear texts , just awsome. I did also the Cinebench R23 in performance mode for single core the score was 1758 and for multicore 17469.
Awesome, thinking to buy one the same build , I was between this and Pro 5 , but after reviews and also Beau recommendation Slim7 its just more premium built and performance wise almost similar , I wait for Black Friday to snap one 😊maybe it get down again ,was 1150£ couple of months ago in UK ❤
@@nrogo That's a great choice and 1150£ is really a bargain ! other brands charge you much more but for much less performance and hardware! Lenovo is really doing a great job with the Legion series!
for the 3.2k screen, when you game do you set the resolutions down to 1600p ? if so, does it get blurry or hazy like they say since its not native or it aint an issue?
@@gamestark9894 Hi , I don't game so I can't respond to your question , I use the 3.2K screen for editing photos and every day use , but as far as I know , there won't be any problems whatsoever if you are going to lower the resolution on games , because you can always decrease the resolution of a screen like 3.2 but you can never increase the resolution of a screen that is full HD 1080 for example, what I want to tell you is the problem exists if you want to increase the resolution of a screen that is not capable ( for example watching a 4k video on a 1080 screen) and not the other way around. Imagine seeing a video for example on RU-vid which is HD, you watch it on your screen in HD, as if the maximum resolution of your screen was 1080, so your 3.2 screen behaves like a 1080 one, so there is no problem whatsoever.
Great review as always. The Phoenix Apu's are the reigning king, combining high performance 8 true Zen 4 cores, with amazing power efficiency and the ability to sustain super high clock speeds. Battery life is top notch as well as shown @22:00. The 7840HS coupled with the capable 12 CU Rdna 3 780m with decent DDR5 ram speed (the faster the Ram, the better. This 5600 DDR5 is about as good as you can get for a regular laptop, though handheld variants get the much faster Lpddr5x at up to 7500mhz, which makes a big difference for the Igpu) that is the perfect Igpu for gaming on battery for potentially a few hours (anywhere from 2.5 hours to 6 hours depending on the wattage used). The 780m is more than capable for the most demanding Emulators like PS3 (Rcps3) and Xbox 360 (Xenia) or Switch (Yuzu or Ryujinx), and can play modern Triple AAA games at lower settings (and potentially resolution) with respectable frame rates. The only downside to the 7840HS is that it can't be Undervolted. Only the 7940HS can be undervolted, or the regular Zen 4 Dragon Range Cpu's like the amazing 7745Hx and the 7845Hx and 7945Hx.
Thank you for making these videos sir! I have been researching to buy my first gaming laptop for a while and your videos help me understand the PC gaming process.
If you do not mind me asking sir, I have a question for you. In terms of price to performance which laptop would you consider purchasing out of the following: Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Ryzen 7 7745hx rtx 4060 for $1300 USD, or the Lenovo Legion 5 Slim Ryzen 7 7840hs rtx 4060 for $1530, or the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Ryzen 5 7640hs rtx 4060 for $1350, or the Asus TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition Ryzen 7 7735hs rx 7600s for $950?@@TechGuyBeau
My legion slim 7 will arrive in a couple weeks. Got a pretty nice deal with black friday sale direct from lenovo. I'm coming from a 13" macbook air that lasted 10 years of daily use. I wanted to move to windows due to software limitations of ios. I wanted a laptop with comparable form factor and build quality, without sacrificing too much weight and battery life. This laptop is exactly in that middle ground I was looking for. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I did want something that could play decently well enough when I'm in bed and have an hour or so to kill. A blend of portability, battery and performance were my priorities. One thing I was concerned about was portability coming from a 13" to a 16". But I noticed as screens got bigger, the chassis got smaller. So even though I'm going up 3" in screen size, the laptop itself is not much bigger than my 10 year old 13" air. Can't wait to get my hands on my slim 7.
I really wish they'd offer the AMD version w/ the 4070. I haven't seen that available. Oh well...My gen 5 (10750/2070S) is still doing well, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this. 1290 to my doorstep. Hope to have it in 2 days. Another ram stick for it on the way as well. Cheers
Just bought this machine last night (thanksgiving) and waiting for it to ship. I was going to get the XPS 15 but i cant be arsed to deal with the shitty power/heating issues that it has. I spent $1500 on this laptop (32 gb ram, 512 ssd, Win 11pro) and have heard many great things. I cant wait till its delivered!
Thanks for your review! You're the only one I could find on this exact laptop, subbed for the follow-up gaming results, can't wait! I had one question: is it possible to run the laptop completely silent (no fan) when doing light productivity work (browsing, RU-vid)?
It doesn’t use a fan when doing those tasks yes. Heck, even in games on silent mode they are quite quiet. I show silent mode gaming extensively in my follow up that will come soon
@@dracoxruiz2563 I don’t have either of those but I did have an x16 and have a full review. The x16 is nice but it’s way too expensive. This legion gives you more for less
Amazing video! Thank you for the good amount of information and the fact that you showed the temps and fan noise during the gaming test. Just bought this machine because of your good testing and good advice. I also read some tests to check multiple sources. But all have the same conclusion.. it's a nice machine! So I'm very excited for this to be on my doorstep soon. 😊
This was a video a was waiting for quite some time. Thank you so much for reviewing this model. I have few questions about the noise and usb-c charging. Do you think the laptop is suitable to use in silent environments like a library when doing light tasks such as document editing ? Also, if you have tried it, is it possible to charge the laptop with a 65W + powerbank ? I've heard that the usb-c charging doesn't always work with 3rd parties.
@@Genezilla you can also get 100 PD small usb chargers. That is probably the best if you also want to be able to game on silent over usb c :) Just make sure it’s a single port, as GAN chargers with multiple ports typical split the current and I’ve found they are troublesome
I have a video on the i7 model. I did a head to head with some people too Where I am getting -9.3 on 1080p 60 RU-vid he was getting -14 or so (similar to my tests on intel). So battery life should be about 40% better on amd in mixed use tasks
I have the option to choose between the Legion Pro 5 Gen 8 and the Legion Slim 7 Gen 8, both with the RTX 4060 and the 500 nits Display for about the same price. I guess that's a no brainer for the Slim 7 then or do you see advantages of the Pro 5? Thanks for the awesome review by the way :)
You have convinced me, I've bought one 😊 I was hesitating with a Pro 5 with the Ryzen 7 HX processor and RTX4070 for more money. But as a content creator, I wanted this DCI-P3 screen. I hope I was noy wrong and that I'll be able to edit 4K 10bits video.
@@TechGuyBeau Sure. And I would have got the 240Hz without an hesitation if the full DCI-P3 was not available. I shoot SLOG and such so a larger color space is much appreciated. Just one question : in your opinion, is such a laptop sufficient to edit 4K 10bits ? (I can still cancel my order if it not the case)
@@pierre1509 easily The 7840hs is an incredibly capable cpu. And encoding with the help of the 4060 is amazing Remember, you can install nvidia studio drivers instead of game ready drivers (these still work for games anyways) and get much better rendering performance
I opted for the cheaper screen because it's brighter and has great rgb performance and decent enough performance across the other profiles for video editing and photography
Awsome Review. How would the Slim 7 perform, if it‘s connected to an external monitor with mouse and keyboard? I wanna use it as a Desktop replacement. Would it effect the battery life?
Was that a dock or just a regular usb-c charger? The community is noticing that you cant charge the laptop with a usbc docking stating that provides 100W. But it charges using a 65w only charger.
It’s very good battery life. With the dGPU disabled the cpu only sips power. I did live testing against the Intel model, as expected amd is much better on battery
I have the Legion Slim 7 Gen6 with a 5800h and 3060 on the 1440p 165hz IPS, and (18 months on) it's been fantastic - gorgeous machining on the metal frame. I upgraded the RAM to 24gb (8gb soldered + 16gb) and added a 2nd NVME drive. Just like you noted in the video, I use it on quiet or balanced mode basically always, including game (not that I'm trying to play the most taxing games - I leave those to my desktop) and this is where I'm happy to tweak some settings or use DLSS to get the best balance of sufficient performance and lower temps/fan-speeds. Honestly, it's still performant enough used like this (and I'll keep it a while yet), but this new model seems to just crush that sweetspot of efficiency and good-enough performance (with some tweaks). Very attractive laptop, though I'm a little skeptical about the real world battery life vs your hypothetical estimates.
They aren’t hypothetical. The battery draw is shown in hwinfo, and you can keep watching it I did testing against me l7i slim. And then with other owners. There is always variability, but long story short, this amd model has great battery life As for the performance side I have a gaming video soon that I’m recording at the moment. As you say, gaming efficiency at low watts is staggeringly good. I game on silent most of the time
@@TechGuyBeau I saw the battery draw in hwinfo - it was the extrapolation about which I was skeptical; whether the projection holds true in practice. I'm sure it has great battery life - I'll be looking to see verification of just how good from multiple sources and testing. Looking forward to the gaming video - will definitely watch. Cheers
Great review. To upgrade the RAM, could we use more than 16G? (like 32 or 64) because I ear we need to always build ram evenly. And it's DDR5 (right) ? Thank you.
Thank you for the answer. My salesman advised me against it. He told me that this would gradually cause problems. I just upgraded to 32Go. @@gmoddude12
What's the discharging rate at idle on the Intel variant when looking at HWInfo? I'm trying to figure out if I care more about the RTX 4070 over the 4060 (since the 4070 variant doesn't seem to exist for the AMD model), or more about the battery life for light tasks. Do you know if the AMD model will add a 4070 option in the future? Or other AMD CPU powered laptops releasing that are similar to this machine? Thanks for the great review!
Hi. I live in the UK and was considering ordering this form their official website which states 2 weeks shipping estimate. However ive heard online that this is a lie and that it actually takes several months. How was your experience with ordering it?
Nice review. Have you been having issues with the battery temps on either slim? I recently got the 7i slim gen 8 intel version and the battery temps at times reach into the 34-38 C degree range just browsing. Hoping there’s not an issue with my battery.
No… and that might be a bit concerning to be honest. Check with others and that might be worth reaching out to Lenovo. Could be a defective battery However also considering doing all you updates. Check out Lenovo vantage updates, and bios updates. Might be solved with that alone in theory
Thanks for the review! Very helpful and ordered this exact model after watching. Wondering what USB-C charger you were using in the last part of your video? Am looking to get a lighter USB-C wall-charger to put in my backpack and leave the 230W one at home. Would you recommend the Lenovo 65W USB-C GaN wall adapter, or should I look into a 135W or 100W USB-C GaN wall adapter? Am mainly using between home and school for 3D modeling / rendering / Adobe suite, and unfortunately no gaming haha.
Can i insert a 32gb ram into the additional ram slot or i need a 16gb ram equivalent to the one soldered on the motherboard ? Thank you for the amazing review 🎉
I'm glad you did test with USB C charging. Does gaming using PD increase wear level faster in Legion? Did you use 140w legion slim charger or just PD 100w?
AMD has usb4, which is equal to thunderbolt 4. So that’s not a deal breaker at all lol. Basically my opinion: buy the AMD model unless intel is much cheaper
@@TechGuyBeau Yes, Boss, AMD it is! Where I am right now both the Intel and AMD are about the same price, although granted the Intel version has been out for a while so probably had a price reduction, and I expect the AMD version will too but I’m scared they’re going to go out of stock, and besides I’m losing my mind right now so best I just buy the damn thing and just take it to bed with me every night. Thanks for the review! May I ask what's the real height of the laptop? From the rubber bands at the bottom to the top of the chasis (with the screen closed).
be aware of modern standby sleep issues, and the fans and connector leds will spin and light up. this happens even when the notebook is in shutdown state when "quick start" is enabled. overall, a decent notebook but with major concerns regarding firmware/hardwarw compatibility.
Thanks for the great review! I just ordered one. Can you recommend a good m.2 drive to put in the exta spot? And what is the max capacity for both spots? Thanks again!
Can you tell me if you did anything to improve battery life? I have one of these and I am topping out at 6 hours (Quiet mode, iGPU mode, Nvidia disabled in device Manager, external monitor, CPU is using 5-7 watts, GPU/CPU temperatures in the low 40s, CPU 1-4% usage ). Not sure where all the wattage is going.
What are you doing for 6 hours? I can get 8 ish hours watching RU-vid playback, but if you are doing all kinds of multi tasking that will drop. Also you likely have bloat: mcafee for example. You can also remove Lenovo vantage and use legion tools instead. I always do a fresh windows install, helps keep the junk off. Lenovo isn’t that bad overall but there’s still a bit of junk
@@TechGuyBeau Found the problem, I was using an external monitor. I had thought that since the laptop screen was off, the computer would use less power using the HDMI port. How wrong I was...🤓
Thanks! - So what SSDs is dual? 4TB? 2TB are singel side? - I wonder what WIFI-7 card will work in this laptop, beacuse me Old Thinkpad only accepted a few cards due to Lenovos "white list" - No clips whats so ever under the bottom cover? ...I am afradid breking something.
Amazing review, that's exactly the laptop i was looking for, and i'm gonna order it in a few days. I'm just undecided on which screen to choose, is the difference between the two displays really noticeable? with the 3.2k i'm a little concerned about battery consumption and blurry gameplay due to downscaling, but having a sharp display would be nice (i don't work with photoshop or videoediting, so if the difference is small i think i'll go for the 2k one). Thank you!

what the max RAM and SSD that this laptop can handle? I order mine at 16 RAM + 1 TB....Thinking buying another 16 RAM DDR5 + another 1TB for upgrade, what are you guy thought? thanks
It's been tested before, if different types of RAM is mixed, then the 1% lows in game are worse. For example 1R16x together 1R8X, maybe even dual rank together with single rank. What would be fastest matchings 48GB DDR5 module for the 16GB soldered RAM?
i have been really struggling with this laptop, so many driver issues and conflicts with Nvidia (including BSODs happening with the hd audio driver) and loads more extra issues like my speaker just...stopped functioning, and then the drivers causing boot from sleep conflicts. Been really hard work to be honest and i am looking to see if Lenovo will replace, but im scared the intel versions have crappy battery life?
I came back to this video to see if anyone had these same issues. Mine has been seen on site and sent in twice in the last two weeks with hdmi issues, slow booting into windows, and display drivers issues with my gpu. Its coming back one more time today and hopefully its fixed. If not im gonna try to get lenovo to replace it.
Great review! 👏 I think I've commented on your video, but it's gone, I'm not sure.q Anyway, I just want to ask you, is there will be Ryzen 9 model on these laptops? Also can AMD model charge with usb c like intel model?
Were you in dGPU mode during the game testing? I see you were drawing about 100W. I just received my unit and in hybrid mode I can only get it to draw about ~85W and in dGPU mode about 105w max. I can't hit the 115W TGP. Also, the custom settings menu (where you can set different TGPs) does not seem to work at all for me.
Is this laptop suitable for music production. I am concern about the fan noise. Is it too disturbing ? music producers need to focus on sounds, so if it creates so much noise, it will be disturbing.
It all depends how sexy you want to be to the ladies. If you ever dream of getting laid then the Slim 7 will get it done, but if you want to remain in your mommy’s basement forever then get the 5. Metal vs cheap plastic, the possibilities are endless. Keep it sexy, young man
@@TechGuyBeauWhat do you do with these after you have finished reviewing? I’d sleep with them all but only if they’re metallic, I don’t like cheap plastic.
Yes it can run without the battery. Although you may want to just use a Lenovo vantage to set it into conservation mode instead. Either or will work and help prevent battery damage
One thing I find really interesting is that I’m in Australia and thanks to your views I finally decided to by the Slim 7i 4060, i7 version and the only version of screen I could get was the 3.2k version you mentioned isn’t available yet, Is the Intel version still solid for both uni and any games I need? @@simi9222 Ah damn okay well there’s no version or the amd in australia yet or announced when will be where I am so I already ordered 7i one should still work well tho
Thanks for the video. I've two questions. Is LegionToolKit compatible with the new Slim 7 (AMD version)? What are the timings of the soldered RAM? Wanted to upgrade with G.Skill 16GB module (5600 CL40-40-40-89)
is there anyway to reduce or limit temp on this one? feels pretty hot when touching both while gaming or just typing, surfing web, especially the top of the keyboard and at the back. thanks
I opted for this one over a 4070 slim 5 because I wanted the battery life, screen, and a slimmer lighter build. Having has a predator Helios at 5.2lbs I will not miss that heft
I bought mine (16APH8) immediately after watching this video. I tested the battery immediately - curiously when on quite mode + 60hz + battery saver + dGPU turned off, I am never able to get 6 watts discharge rate, its always 10+ watts, even when I limited power to CPU to max at 15%. As a result my battery life is around 6 hours instead of 10+ hours as others got. I wonder what is keeping draining the battery...
You probably have a lot of bloatware. Remove software like GeForce experience, mcafee, etc. Also check your startup apps in task manager to make sure a bunch of stuff isn’t starting on boot
Did USB-C charging work as expected? Were there no issues with fans spinning up every few mintues while asleep? I've gone through two units so far that both had these issues
I just published a video gaming on this with a little GAN charger. That fun spinning thing does happen. But that’s windows not the laptop Window modern standby is horrendous… tbh just use hibernate
Thanks for the reply. I watched your video and I'm impressed. It's great to have someone run the same test I was interested in. I noticed that given enough time, the fan spinning does stop eventually. I am using an Anker 736 100w charger that I thought was a good quality, but it seems like I'll need to test with another charger to see for sure
Great comprehensive review! I got my laptop yesterday and I've tweaking around with power settings trying to optimize it for the lowest discharge rate. I can only get mine to go down to 10W idle and 16W while watching youtube videos (50% brightness 1080p). This is with iGPU, quiet mode, 60hz, keyboard lights off, battery saver on, removed bloatware etc. Was something special done to reach that -6W idle and -10W video?
