Experience the incredible sound of 864,000 pounds (3844 kN) of thrust, 2.16 miles (3.48 km) from launch pad 0A! The first launch of the improved Northrop Grumman Antares 230+ rocket lifted over 8000 pounds (3600 kg) of cargo into orbit on a journey to the ISS.
This audio is among the loudest on our channel. It is completely unedited with the exception of bringing the gain down to avoid further distortion. RU-vid compression has reduced and distorted the audio a bit, but it should still sound fine with the volume turned way up.
The microphone was placed about 150 feet (50 m) away from us to reduce the sound of the crowd and maximize the sound of the rocket. Live stream audio courtesy of NASA TV.
Filmed from the old NASA ferry dock (Pierce Taylor Road). BJG 11/02/19
This was a big road trip from Charlottesville and it was no easy task after a very long, exhausting week. Special thanks to UVA students Artken, Andrew, Grace, Jack, Max, Nicholas, and Ryan.
