Science education has never been that great, especially when religion is allowed to influence education to the point where people are not failing classes they should definitely be failing. I took geology in a community college in FL a long time ago, and half the class couldn't pass a quiz because they couldn't comprehend continental drift, fossils or timelines past 6000 years. These people graduated high school and can't get the age of the earth question correct on a test. These same people... adult aged humans, chose to remain ignorant and just copy my answers to get through a class where they learned absolutely nothing. This is what happens when people are raised to think their beliefs supersede facts.
Remember that as someone said the TV station cherrypicks 'em for broadcast. Still - They have firearms, raise children, drive cars, and probably lick steel poles after a freezing cold.
I’m not American but I swear your education system makes every third world countries’ education systems look like their students go on to attend Oxford or Cambridge
My youngest brother is 8 years my junior and he was going through with A's. then he read this news article to me. I guess he never had to read the word before. He asked me what deo - dor - ant was. When you hear the word sounded out that way you get confused too. I had to look at the word to see what the hell he was talking about.? De odor ant. From that moment on I thought the English language is damn hard to LEARN. MY BROTHER WAS JUST FINISHING GRADE 12 as a B+ student. I guess he never ran into the word before. First time for everything I guess. He broke it down into smaller units but he broke it up wrong.. Stuff happens even to the best of us. But he knows what an eclipse is & why.
@@asdk3090 you can't possibly vote for biden this time though. this is the time to vote third party. both candidates are unfit as presidents and morally bankrupt.
I can't believe that there are so many people who can't define what an eclipse is. You would think that the older folks would have known. I have second hand embarrassment for the ignorance of these people.
While their answers were indeed shocking, I believe they only show the crazy wrong responses so, let's hope there were more people who did know what an eclipse was.
There's a reason we as a country don't know the metric system. They tried to teach that in science and no one paid attention to that either. Less than 20% of those that graduate high school in this country are proficient in science. It's our worst subject as a country, so it's kind of amazing that we keep trying to do the hard things like landing people on the moon.
Based on percentages of tertiary education in the populace we are ahead of the US, and but we're not that high on the world education scale (in 2024 we rank 10th - at least we're still in the Top 10). The US used to be 5th back in the 1980s, but has since fallen to 12th. Australia used to be 9th back then, we've slipped one place down. That's based on tertiary education though. The best secondary education figures I can find are the WT20 education rankings, which has Australia in 17th and the US in 30th. Neither are particularly flattering, but for a country with the resources of the US to be ranked 30th is very embarrassing. Just for interest, South Korea, Japan, and the Scandinavian countries are at the top of both lists.
@kg4wwn Exactly! Apparently common sense isn't very common, according to how many comments think Americans are not taught about solar eclipses in elementary school. Lol
What gets me is not that people don't know what an eclipse is. It's the fact that when people don't know stuff, they hardly ever say that they don't know. Saying "I don't know" is largely the preserve of the better educated.
I mean even some third world countries have better health insurance than the US and none of them have that many guns in civilian hands.l, even if you include the weapons in the hands of militias.
i am originally from new zealand. fortunately as a nation we never buy into the American 'self marketing' greatest country in the world BS. it was really cool growing up in a country with virtually no racism and no one cares about genders etc..(just be you).. . and where the 'far left' and the 'far right' political parties are really only a few centimetres apart on their policies..
Wohl eher 98 von 100 Leuten. Das liegt aber nur daran dass das deutsche Wort für Eclipse sich so ziemlich selbst erklärt. Sonnenfinsternis. ...bis auf den Teil mit dem Mond. :D
I am from America, and I am quite confident that 9 out of 10 people here could explain what a solar eclipse is. You got to realize that this is a comedy show, so of course they are only gonna display the answers that people got totally wrong. Jimmy Kimmel's team was probably out there for hours interviewing people trying to find the few confused people who didn't know what an eclipse is. Now I know you are from Germany, but you should probably learn proper punctuation before dissing Americans again. It is grammatically incorrect to use a comma to separate an independent clause from a dependent clause like you did the first two times bud.
@@MrBilly-xo4mt I admit that I occasionally make mistakes in foreign languages. As long as I express myself clearly, I can live with minor slips in punctuation. Feel free to keep the two misplaced commas and use them for other purposes.
no one in their right mind would live in America. my late Republican dad (a good Republican,) moved to Canada so us kids wouldn't be born in America, live in America or be killed in America. (but i do have dual Canada-US citizenship, so I still ended being American LOL)
Wow! I taught about the eclipse on Monday in 2nd grade. I got my students glasses. We went over what happens, the path of totality, all of it. I hope they remember it when they are adults. 🤔
I hope so too, Anita. What happens to make grown people like these so stupid? I mean, they had to go to school, so what kind of schools were they? Just in some random person's basement? No books, just crayons and a paper tablet? THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND GOOD WORK!
I so appreciate the lady in the peach that said she didn’t know what crossed in front of the sun. She offered what she could and didn’t lie about not knowing after that - only guessed a planet when the producer pushed her for an answer. It’s a good thing to admit you don’t know something instead of creating a falsehood. It allows a doorway to learn when we admit we don’t know something. Thank you lady for being brave to offer what you remembered about it, and most especially being brave enough not to lie. Love from 🇨🇦
Just remember that they likely asked a lot more people than that and only include the people who didn't know it. The bit wouldn't be funny if everyone was giving the correct answer so they just include the clips of those who didn't. If they asked one thousand people and those five - not including Guillermo and Cousin Micki since I'm fairly sure they just play a role for the show - were the only ones who didn't know the answer would you still think that?
Barack Obama. Anthony Fauci. Bill Gates. To name a few. Some might also note the past minds of Rev. Martin Luther King jr.. J. Robert Oppenheimer. etc. etc. Not to mention the thousands of U.S professors and students here in America who are the foundation to 13 of the top 20 colleges in the entire world. Cmon bro.
There are. It's just the dumbest of us get really excited at being offered to talk on camera. The intelligent ones aren't entertaining, so they generally cut us out or just avoid the normal or better intelligence.
@@annielane5621 Sorry to mansplain but... Ms Greene famously said "gazpacho police" and "peach tree dish." This is a play on that, swapping "rocket science" for "rocket appliance". 🙂
It's not completely their own fault. We've been groomed for a couple centuries, just in this country, to place value on our ability to follow the rules and it's only hard worthwhile work if it's manual or skilled labor.
Trump loves creating outrage over imaginary things. I can't wait to hear his wild theory as to why Santa gives him no presents on Christmas. Though, he does get some tasty clean coal.
I wonder if the reason that Trump has a tough time reading teleprompters is because he still has a spot in front of his eyes from looking at the eclipse in 2017.
@@NJones-lb1ln Come on man!, he is an avid reader of the Bible, his favorite book, he is the greatest Bible reader ever! He would have fired that Peter guy, but, Judas? one of his kind 😛!
you should pay more attention to the education data released every year on high school proficiency in this country. science is the lowest, followed by math. this is what happens when you spend decades investing less in education every year.
What you saw were just a few choice individuals on Hollywood blvd in LA. That's not a very good cross section of America. Talk to 100 people on the streets in LA and then pick out the few idiots you ran into. It's easy. It's a lot harder to laugh at the smart ones so they dont show those and Im sure there were a lot more of them than there were of the few we saw.
We used a plain piece of cardboard with a tiny hole in it to show the eclipse without looking at the sun. We didn't have special glasses when we were young.
So leaving kids in cages at the border, and wearing a jacket that says i don't care, earns her a child advocacy award?? Can't wait to see what they give her for saying she doesn't give a $uck about Christmas. Who cares about Christmas?
I expect at least a few to be educated enough to know that according to NASA, you can safely look at the sun during totality. So as long as they were doing it during totality, they were fine and everyone could have removed the glasses for a few minutes for the best view.
He’s doubling down on a previous faux pas when he had said the Democrats want “abortion beyond nine months,” and people called him out on it. It’s what he does instead of admitting he misspoke.
@@lynnevanvorce7727 I don't understand how these lies are not being challenged by rational people of all sides. If I was a Republican in the US I would call hjim out on this BS.
When Kimmel does these questions on the street, it’s so embarrassing how ignorant many of these folks are. So many people must never read a newspaper. Like my trump-loving brother.
Its both amazing and shocking how so many people dont know so many basic things, like what an eclipse is or how to send a letter correctly through the mail...how did this happen?
As a South African looking at adult Americans failing to explain a simple eclipse is beyond shocking. Something we learn in primary school here. Very shameful
What do you mean. We learnt in kindergarten how the eclipse works. Every so many years a dragon escapes from it’s cave. As it flies looking for little children to eat it sometimes flies high enough to block the light. After that it runs for president using the name donald trump.
@@AnthonyOMulligan-yv9cgWhat will God do next? Make the sun come up in the east? Make the earth rotate around the sun? We need to wake up to the warnings!
If it wasnt an election year, I am sure he would have. However, doing it now would just give him and his followers more of a reason whine and support each other's stupidity.

The end of this made me so sad!! How do we have all the world's knowledge at our fingertips, yet we aren't even smart enough to remember what was taught in 2nd-3rd grade?!!
Oh yes. She did so much for children! Remember her coat the "I don't care, do you?" Did so much for those babies that will never see their parents again.
@@nancymarquis3943 When I was young I definitely subscribed to this mindset regarding many things, especially politics. But I've always had an interest in science and nature.
Americans know what Ak and Block mean. They are experts in guns. And when a kid try to get a cookie in a cupboard at night, the father, a bit paranoid, pull his gun and kills his own son. 30,000 people are shot annually in the beautiful America.
Lol in Canada, my city close to montreal, went silent when the eclipse was starting to the end. people were more in awe and watched rather than screaming around
