It's important to engage with MAGAs, but not necessarily politically. Our neighbors across the street are MAGA, and we sometimes respectfully discuss politics and roll our eyes at each other's signs, but we still go out to dinner together, we feed their cats when they go to gun shows. They watch our house when we go on road trips. It's heartbreaking my family has been ruptured by MAGA. My sisters' families hate each other because of Trump, but as the middle sister I talk to everyone. It's important to model good behavior to my MAGA relatives. We engage in family celebrations and when they start spouting off about "femnazis" or "baby eating pedophiles" we are there to throw cold water on the rhetoric saying "Whoa there, you are talking about us! You're talking about Grandma, your aunts, your cousins..." They are startled because they are used to spouting poison without reflection and they say, "We don't mean YOU," and I remind them that of course they mean us. When they talk about " demonic Democrats" they are hurting their family. It gives them pause for a small time, but they fall back posting filth on the internet. I know they are in a cult, and I think it's important to challenge their beliefs by continuing to be in their lives thus challenging them. My liberal sister can't handle it and thinks I'm nuts. Guess I am.
