Dear America, please don't fuck this up. We're sick of Trump too. We would really appreciate continued stability. Get well soon. Love from your cousins, Australia
Love mature adult conversations like this!! As an independent I want an ADULT as a president! Also do NOT want the chaos that Trump encourages, embraces!!
Are you saying that trump isn't an adult? He's technically been an adult for 60 years. The fact that his mind never advanced beyond the age of six must be your issue.
I'm just a random guy on the internet, following all your podcasts, trying to be a better human. Once again, thanks for the enlightening conversation Jon.
Although not as historic or iconic as his original Daily Show run, or as investigative as his brief run with Apple, this may be my favorite Jon Stewart vehicle. I especially like how he ends each show by sharing the spotlight with 3 beautiful women a generation (at least) younger than he is, without making it creepy, patronizing, or sexist at all. The choice of guests is usually spot on, and Jon does a great job of letting them fully express themselves while still getting his thoughts in there. Regardless of who wins, please keep this going!
What an amazing conversation! This is what it looks like when you invite the other side to the table for meaningful discussion & not commit to locking them up when there is disagreement. Sensible communication has a real strong chance of producing answers both sides can truly agree upon. Thank you for showing us this still exists!
As a computer programmer, I spent a great deal of time and effort rewriting code to make sure that Y2K wouldn't be a disaster. This year I donated to the Harris campaign and cast my vote for her in an effort to once again prevent an epic disaster.
@@s.schattenprophet Well at the very least we won't have Tim Miller's Muslim ban on day one nor the promised exiling of people protesting in favour of Palestinians ( not sure how that would work. But maybe it's covered in project 2025 ) nor do we have to look forward to Jared Kushner's suggestion that Israel develop Gaza for the Tourist Trade. Trump has said that he would encourage Netanyahu " to finish the job in Gaza and the West Bank" But if you're in favour of those policies I guess you're voting for Trump or Jill Stein.
@@s.schattenprophet breaking news - The winner will support isreal. One of them is backed by an apocalyptic doomsday cult with isreal at the center of it's utopian myth.
Hey Jon! Be a fan for years! I’m really thankful you’re back at it. Sorry apple didn’t work out. So glad to have you as a voice of reason and comedic relief throughout all of this madness.
Love your work Jon! ❤ The way you articulate questions and openness with which you listen to others is just amazing! You speak whatever I always have in mind. Keep up the great work!
I'd almost forgotten that people on opposite sides can have courteous, intelligent conversations looking for solutions for all. This show is restoring my faith.
That’s why many of us Americans are here too 😂 Intelligent, authentic conversation about the complexities of our government isn’t always easy to find. Jon Stewart is a living legend.
You have to be careful when you listen to intelligent, informative conversations like this. There are WAY TOO MANY people, large swaths of Americans, who believe the Earth is flat, that the government controls the weather, that there are Jewish Space lasers and that the 2020 Presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.
This will be my 16th time voting and in the past there were times I was concerned but this is the first time I have been absolutely terrified. I hope that this country will be prepared for the aftermath of the vote.
This was one of my favorite podcasts in a long while. I mean all of Jon’s podcasts are great, but this is a much needed conversation that I see America needs to have. The US has a complicated history and unfortunately for social media it really requires a nuanced conversation, which seems impossible. Like freedom for every man was and still is a big deal. However for Tomas Jefferson man meant white land owning man. But today it means something very different. That tension is hard to deal with. People can be good and bad.
Agree on the necessary nuance for many things and unfortunately, the online world and social platforms aren't really set up for that. It's all focused on speed, likes and attention. The more that path is pursued, the harder it is to dig into the complexities of many issues faced in the world today. It's now like trying to dig a path for a highway with a plastic spoon... a massive challenge as we've all come to see.
Here is healthy, balanced, nuanced, conversation between a liberal and a conservative with a shared love of country and countrymen. It gives me hope that not all is lost!
This was a great conversation. I feel like, with most of your guests, I need to keep notes because there's so much knowledge dropped that needs to be picked up and ran with.
The Bulwark is a conservative news outlet, but they are the sane, rational brand of conservatism. They're my go to source to get the conservative perspective, so i can avoid echo chamber syndrome.
@@elizabethpomeroy3145 I agree, I do listen them for a different perspective. I am just not convinced that the GOP base will ever go back to anything resembling the way they were which the Bulwark folks represent.
26:32 "what if our media relentlessly litigated those parameters of our reality..." reminded me of how Jeff Daniels' character in The Newsroom was a prosecutor before he became an anchor. "Reese, the newsroom became a courtroom because I felt the American public needed a fucking lawyer."
It makes me sick that when i see American flags in front of a house or on a car, my first reaction is digust. The MAGA movement has co-opted patriotism to the point where they've tried to take the American flag
I understand completely how you feel. In Brazil, where I'm from and live now, the same happened to me when the Bolsonaristas (from the cult of former president Bolsonaro) co-opted the Brazilian flag, claiming that if you were not for Bolsonaro, you were not a patriot or a true Brazilian. We voted him out in the last elections BUT the Bolsonarism is still alive in the country.
Strange. It makes me sick because of completely different reasons. Witnessing the military support that murdered ten thousands of innocents. Hope the Dems staying in power and can double their support.
what a relief this show was. several hours ago I watched some clips from Rogan/Vance and scrolled through thousands of "what a wonderful guy j.d. is" and my horror was overwhelming. then I came here and my panic attack is somewhat quelled. thank you
Hey Mona, But did the spouse apologize for their behavior? Are they actively trying to change their ways? Maybe the spouse is criticizing because the other spouse wants me to ignore what they did with no change.
Jon You were so right to push back when Mona said that the left criticizes America and that they find faults in the past. I am a direct descendant of one of the founding fathers. As far as I can go back I know each generation of ours has served in the military. My brothers my Father, my uncles, I can keep on. And the fact is anytime we falter as a country we have to criticize the actions taken in our names. This is why we fought the Soviet’s or the Nazi’s, so that when our leaders act improperly we say it and in my opinion if we were not to do that we are nothing but traitors. Government of the people by the people for the people, can mean anything if we do not hold our leaders accountable. Thank you for your time. 🇺🇸 please everyone vote Blue 💙. We need to make sure VP Harris wins and vote Blue. We need to save our country from these MAGA idiots.
I don't live there, but it's still very scary what's happening over there. It's utterly baffling that nearly half the population supports that guy. It's mad, everyone else thinks he's a chump
How about a 100% (possibly higher) sales tax on advertising charges? The source of most disinformation today is the algorithms that are motivated by the revenue obtained by producing clicks. What if instead those entities were somehow motivated to spread factual information.
Jon thankyou (and I really mean this) thankyou for keeping me sane and being able to point out left's faults as well and being thoughtful and relective about this whole nightmare. Gives me hope.
It's an interesting discussion, but when half of people don't care in the slightest about empirical data and, in fact, view in negatively....it's a lost cause. Which is exactly what this country, and even world, is.
i didnt think about it till you all looked at that viewer comment, but the first presidential election I participated in was 2016. Every presidential election I've been able to vote in, has had trump as a candidate. What the hell man.
As an outsider, from the UK, in a lot of ways the United States has been on a collision course with this moment since the establishment of the US Federal government. It has been in the interest of some to sow complete distrust in government. In the UK, the vast majority of people harbour an understanding that the fundamental parts of government are operating in our interest and in turn afford it a certain amount of trust. Internationally the BBC is seen as an example of good information, of honesty. British people can turn on the news at 6pm/10pm and trust that what we are being told is an aggregated truth. It fosters the shared reality that is discussed in this podcast. Because so many Americans are raised to be distrusting of the national government, it is not in a viable position to offer a source of news and information that people will agree is a statement of truth and the anchor of a shared reality. “For profit” news is an exacerbation of the downward trajectory of objective truth that the US has been on for decades. Do not kid yourselves, the language of distrust in monolithic government is as British as it gets, Orwell said all that needs to be said 75 years ago. But the BBC is no Ministry of Truth. The lack of an adjudicator of shared reality in the US has been exploited to an alarming degree by Trump. It has highlighted how vulnerable a system of norms but few hard rules is to bad actors.
While in general I find the English to be better informed and more curious in their thinking, Brexit was a fabulous reality check. A focused group of propagandists managed a campaign of misinformation that caused the British to vote against their own self interest and put an absolute buffoon into Downing St. In England, France and Europe in general there seems to be a move towards Fascism as a political comfort zone. Even in Canada ( my home ) I hear people saying things that harken back to " the good old days " Mostly what they mean is when we were all " white". We are none of us free from the contagion. We seek simple answers to complex problems. We believe and follow people who tell us that they have the answers for what ailes us. America is going through a very visible convulsion and the out come will affect not just the US but the world. Vast power houses like China, Russia and the US transform us all with their merest vibrations as the British, Spanish, Arabic and Roman Empires once did.
Regarding the desire to discard the Constitution - go read the letters between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in the National Archives. Jefferson argued that the Constitution should be reevaluated, and even completely tossed out every 19 years or so (every generation). He argued that laws are for the living, not the dead. I agree with him. The Constitution was NEVER intended to be treated as some immutable holy relic. It was meant (at least in Jefferson's view) to be a living document that was changed with the times.
A few years ago I started criticising the Australian government for its treatment of refugees, people from other nations asked me my opinion of their nation. One American asked me about my opinion of their democracy. I stated that it doesn’t have democracy because it’s possible for the losing party in an election to become the government. Shortly after, my social media became full of the conversations Americans are having about the Electoral College and I realised just how strong America’s democracy is.
What would parents of a 25 year old daughter do if she called and said she was bringing her new boyfriend home for Thanksgivings Day Dinner. She said he has a few issues but she likes that he’s kind of a bad boy. The parents say how bad? Well, he has 31 felonies with 60 more pending and 27 sexual assaults, 1 of which a judge determined was a rape, but he’s a great businessman with only 6 bankruptcies, but you’ll like him. Any parents with values would say they, we are going out of town this holiday.
Great idea about using a courtroom rules of evidence approach to media conversations Jon. I don't think either of your terrific guests have a vision for how that would work as its such a new idea. But part of law school is the use of mock courts and I think that could be a model for future debates on TV or otherwise. Guests would need to bring evidence and witnesses to back up their arguments, rather than just "people are saying" whatever and talking over each other. Don't give up on the idea, Jon!
I didn't see a moderator, a right wing and a left wing debate. I saw three rational, thoughtful people sharing ideas about how to preserve the institutions that are good for the people of this country and the world. It was uplifting. It seemed normal. Unfortunately it's exceptional.
Hell no to the "American exceptionalism is good, actually" argument. We as a country have done much more wrong than right and recognizing that and righting our wrongs and taking care of marginalized people is much more important than saying "we did some good, celebrate America"
Maybe. But politically you are going to lose some very important points coming out of the gate if your starting point is "America's bad and we need to do better." IMO it should be "America's good and we need to do better."
Yeah, the “Beg Your Pardon” podcast is difficult for me to stomach. They often delight in a lot of right wing ideology that is grotesque; they just use niceties and a calm cadence. It makes my skin crawl.
@@michaelf8221You are right. I try to convince my Palestinian friends of that. But somehow the "unconditional military support" makes them think otherwise.
