This was an excellent well balanced and researched blog. I can't call it a report because whenever I do so I get comments along the lines of " JP isn't a reporter or a media outlet". No, for me he is better. Those reporters just do 9-5 and are told what to say. JP on the other hand is engaged and passionate. Please sack Piers Motgan and give JP his job.

The impact of this on the elections - if any at all - will be determined by how successful the spin is on both sides. In any case, it is all about the undecided, as each side (and the Republican side more so) has already galvanized their base support.

For some of the fans of ATPGeoPolitics, it would be interesting to study the political popularity shift in Slovakia and EU since the shooting of Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico... That was also a "failed" attempt. I wonder if other right-wing leaders who are struggling in the polls might be "targeted" by near misses to boost popularity? Carlson was "predicting" an assassination attempt on Trump within the past year... sure smells funny, though we know nothing for sure yet. I sincerely hope that most of us here remain focused on Ukraine and impacts to Ukraine by this event, rather than chasing the drama involving Trump and the killing of at least one rally participant.

Not a single one Finnish media has claimed that the shooter was anyone other than the person who is officially suspected, at least none of the ones that I have read during the night and day, so I don't know where such a misunderstanding has come from, I myself have read about ten different Finnish media publications on the matter, the first I already read at night, and none of them said anything other than that the man suspected of being the shooter died in the situation himself and was himself a registered republican, at night the name was not yet known, but in the morning it was also read in the Finnish media, so if some media has mixed it up, then either it is not Finnish the media first of all, or it is some representative of the ö class sensational click yellow press, which in Finland no one takes seriously as a news source, I already read all the publications of the biggest media in Finland about the matter last night, and in the morning even more, no one has claimed to be the perpetrator other than the man who died in the situation..anyway, it's very rare for Finnish media to publish information that hasn't been confirmed first, and if it happens rarely, it's usually also mentioned in the story itself that it's an unconfirmed rumor, and that wasn't the case with yesterday, besides, mistakes rarely happen to Finnish media, these media themselves usually report their mistake within hours and correct the information ..It is precisely because of this confirmation of information that Finnish media often publish important matters only hours after other media, which is due to the fact that, contrary to many international media, the media in Finland have quite strict regulations even in the law, false advertising is illegal in Finland, already from that it can be concluded that if that is illegal, then there are certainly laws regarding the activities of the media as well.. Jonathan, I think something that's lost in this whole conversation is the fact that, Trump never condemned this nor has he come out and said sympathies for the fallen and injured at his rally. Rally. That's because Donald Trump only thinks about himself. Fist bump and say fight. All that does is foment more political violence and that's his intention. I've never seen such division in this country and it started with Trump but more or less it started in 2011 when the tea party took over Congress and have continually tried to divide and cause government to actually Holt and how it functions. Those same people that cause this also say that government doesn't function and yet they're the reason for such dysfunction in government.

Hi Jonathan. I don’t buy any of the numerous alternative explanations and conspiracy theories that have started emerging all over the place, but there is one aspect of Trump’s response that can easily be misinterpreted if you don’t know how Trump grew up. I mean the ‘fight!’+ raised fist response. I didn’t recognise it as a defiant response, at all, the first time he made it. I immediately felt it to be a self-shaming response. I know my narcissists. They sometimes act out their abusive parent’s shaming response to their response of fear that same abuser used to instill in them a minute prior, … all when they were still young children. They however only do so when they experience the exact same kind of fear as they did so many decades ago. Acute fear for one’s life, almost always fits the bill. He tries to modify his response afterwards, but doesn’t succeed completely. It is a very unfamiliar response to most of us; that is why suspicious minds will view it as contrived. I feel it should demonstrate to everyone that Trump is not a sociopath or psychopath, but a narcissistic personality disorder patient pur et dur. His opponents have however designed their strategy and tactics on the notion he is psychopathic, which I feel is a dangerously mistaken assessment. Psychopaths don’t respond like Trump did there, at the rally. No way. It’s like Captain Ahab preparing for Moby Dick, and encountering a different white whale that fits the physical description, but fights the Pequod in a very different manner than Ahab knows Moby Dick to do. Ironically, since I believe Trump’s response is a quirk carried over from early childhood, I am inclined to remark that we have just witnessed Trump’s equivalent of President Biden’s stutter.

Was just thinking when you said that he would never just stand there knowing someone will hit his ear but what if he knew they wont hit him and the injury was caused by Trump himself like when they make the movies they pop the blood... I am not saying anything else than a counter to you saying it can't be staged because he would never stand there knowing. If you look at the comment by "Humam Abd al-Salam" at 8:12, to the right of his name you will see the symbol of Islam followed by some Arabic writing that is "Allahu Akbar". You were not impressed by his comment. Like some people connected with the Middle East, he seems to be vulnerable to conspiracy theories. Maybe that is why so some many religions were made up in that region.
