I can't say I know how he's going to play this, but if Trump attempts to turn himself in to "overshadow" the debates I would argue some people may wonder why he couldn't handle his legal problems AND attend the debates like a serious contender. Scheduling both out in advance, as he has the time, doesn't appear to be a difficult task. Seems very amateurish to the point of bordering a blunder. It's hard to deny such a strategy only reconfirms his childish antics. I truly believe the Republican Party (whatever that means) wants someone who can play the game of politics and play it exceptionally well. They want to win.
