When the vaccine for Covid became available, my mom reminded me of a situation that took place when I was in junior high (the late 1970s). During my 7th and 8th grade years, I often would mow the lawns of a woman who lived a few houses up from us. This woman needed the use of a wheelchair and, as a youngster, I never inquired as to why. When my mom refreshed my memory of this time, she said our neighbor was one of the last individuals in America to develop polio before the vaccine became available. How different would her life have been had the vaccine been available to the public a few months earlier? Unfortunately, most Americans are health illiterate and don't recognize how valuable vaccines are in preventing a whole host of terrible, terrible diseases.

I do know of some older aunts and uncles in my family who had shingles (Silent Generation). Considering the vax came out in the 1988 and not available in the USA until the 1995, it is more like you never heard of it until later and you are a young millennial or gen Z. It isn’t very common, my family is just pretty unlucky. You are more protected from shingles with the vax. However, having chicken pox as an adult is far more severe than as a kid. If you have had chicken pox, the virus lays dormant after your body clears it until you are older (weakening immune system) and it can spring back to ‘life’ and cause shingles. My grandfather’s uncle had polio. He was in a wheel chair all but a few years of his early life. My mother had whooping cough and rubella as a toddler. Part of her brain was damaged, she had to relearn everything again. Luckily, she was young that she didn’t have any cognitive issues. It really does make a difference when you see someone who actually suffered from the diseases. The vaccines are always safer for 99% of people.

I had 2 friends that had Polio back in the 50's and our school passed around "March-of-Dimes" cards to fill up with dimes and turn in to go toward the Polio research being done, Not only did I get the vaccine as soon as it was available, I've always been proud of being part of the generation that helped it be developed. On my first trip to San Diego, I went to the Salk Institute and was so proud of what we accomplished with our little cards of dimes. Made sure all my Great Grandchildren got the vaccine also!
