Both armies use T-80s and the Ukrainians won't mind obtaining a few extra ones generously donated by the Russians

This is only partially true, the gas-turbine T-80, T-80B and T-80U were built in Russia. Ukraine built the earlier T-64 and the T-80UD with diesel engine. If you see T-80B, BVM or other variants in Ukrainian service they are captured examples. Ukraine had about 345 T-80 variants after the Soviet Union ended but these were mostly sold to concentrate on the T-64 which Ukraine had in larger numbers and had the factories to build spare parts.
