This video is an open box kit review of the newly re-released Trumpter 1:12th scale 1966 Ford GT-40 Le Mans winning coupe. The parts count is 312 pieces with photo etch detail parts also included.
Looking forward to this build. The GT40 is one of the best looking racing cars ever made. I have the 1/24 scale kits of both the black Bruce McLaren car and the blue Ken Miles car. They're nice kits. Not overly detailed (no engine so kerbside) but adequate for the scale
It's beauty from every angle and besides looking good, they were awesome performers. 1,2,3 sweep at the 1966 Le Mans race and total domination at that race for several years in a row afterword even though competitors had the chance to up their game. Historically very impressive.
Beautiful kit. Just finished building the first edition of the kit. As you stated, wonderfully detailed. Most pieces fit together without a problem. My only complaint would be too much chrome. Removed with oven cleaner and painted correctly. BTW, the first edition of the kit just came with one set of decals for the number 2 GT40. Have fun.
The Gulf colors are iconic, right up there with the Martini scheme. I've seen a couple of GT-40s at the Historic Motorsports Festival at Sonoma Raceway.
I unpack mine a few days ago, I think I’ll have to build up my skills a bit more before starting this kit. I haven’t done a 1:12 model before and really want to do it justice.
Great review! I just picked one up for Christmas. Any updates on yours? Would love to see your progress as I'll be doing the Ken Miles version as well. 😊👍🏽
Hey Boyd are you going to light this kit like you did with the 1/8 scale 65 Corvette. By the way your Vette build was the first one of your builds that I watched and I have been watching your videos since. Thanks for inspiration and fun that you have provided. Keep on modelin.
Hey boyd I'm looking to build a UH-34 CHOCTAW helicopter but I can't find the resin nose conversion for it ...the helicopter is 1/72 SCALE do you know of any other place I can try ...big thanks
I just did a quick Google search and I'm seeing a lot of resin nose kits for the UH-34 on the website Scalemates.com not sure if any are the one your looking for.
Awesome, looks like several guys are ordering one. Maybe we can organize a group build later this summer. It would be cool to see everyone's take on it.
Sorry...but the seats in these cars are NOT comfortable. Our shop built a 1966 Mark 1 recently and these are hot, cramped cars. But, I do have to say the race seats, the unit that your kit represents are better than the road seats. They are part of the chassis, you move the pedals and steering wheel, the seats do not move. There are elastic bands about 2 inches wide that are stretched across the seat rails then the seats basically lay over that. I do not know how a guy like Dan Gurney, even with the bubble in the door top, drove these damn things!! He must have been crammed in it!! You can see the car here: www.hemmings.com/stories/2019/05/09/ford-gt40-and-mercedes-benz-500k-special-roadster-share-best-of-show-at-keels-wheels
This kit is riddled with errors. It is not possible to make an accurate model without major work. The plastic is over-thick and soft. You will know about the mass of nasty, nasty, chrome intended for 10year olds. The front & rear suspension positions are wrong. The front cockpit is to narrow at the front due to the incorrect position of the suspension. The peddle box is a joke and offset to the left - again becasue of the incorrect suspension. The side valances of the cockpit are wrong and the 2 buttons to the front right of the driver are missing. The mirror on the inside of'passenger' door is missing. The rear monoque body construction is missing and what there is is toal invention. The door blister is not on KM's car. There was no anti roll bar on the Le Mans cars. The engine mounting is only partly done and then badly. No spare tyre, no distributor, no ignition harness, no cranckase breather, the tread on the tyres is incorrect. The upper and lower body fit is poor. The steering rack is out of a toy intended for a 5year old. I could go on as there are many more errors - they must have had access to a real GT40 but, they appear to have given up and invented stuff as they went along. The Meng kit is a much better representation but for accuracy, there are still some issues. In this scale and with such an iconic car you think a better job would have been made of it. No wonder Trumpeter re-marketed this using a different name but everyone knows it's Trumpeter.
