I think a lot of folks apply a kind of weird double standard: they want Tudor to make "tool watches" which are true to their heritage....but then they complain because they aren't getting funky brightly-coloured offerings with illogical combinations of complications (a dive watch with GMT...? C'mon man!!) Back in the old days when Tudor was supplying real diving equipment to professionals - including for military divers - there was a blue Tudor Submariner and a black Tudor Submariner....and that was basically it! And they were not being changed/updated more than about once a decade, were they? Now it feels like they are expected to reinvent the wheel every year.
People just like to complain. Tudor could drop a watch exactly to their specification and they'd still find something to complain about. A generation of complainers. That's all.🤣
Well said. I truly don’t understand the fantasy of a GMT pelagos with some orange markings. The orange markings alone would probably be a deal breaker for a lot of people.
"The sand on the beaches of the northern Gulf of Mexico is made of tiny grains of quartz crystals that have washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over thousands of years - Those quartz crystals are tiny spheres. When we walk across them, the round grains of quartz rub each other and the air around them escapes. That’s when we hear the squeaking or whistling sound."
@@drlawyc *Takes a snooty glance at your third-party strap* "I'm sorry, this is the "In-house beach" for VIPs - the regular beach is over th-" *Seiko pops over in a a fantastically loud(and somehow cool) Hawaiian shirt* "Suh dude, welcome my man, don't listen to AP" *Seiko leans in and whispers* "He's got some serious ego issues."
beautiful cinematography here. I love the story behind the watch, and the bezel on the USN FXD. It just makes more visual sense than the countdown bezel on the OG FXD. I’m glad Tudor is building this line out. Adrian’s NATOs look far better on this watch than either strap that comes with it.
I have a MY22 FXD and I love it. I emailed my AD on launch day and added my name to this watches waiting list. I literally got the call today and collected the black version. Its a stunning watch and I absolutely love it, the matt black is perfect and the colour of the strap just makes everything pop. Very happy customer, well played Tudor :)
@@ChefPelle exactly, same here at one AD. But another did put me on it. Both told me they get less than 10 a year wnd have “good customers waiting since the release”😔 I’m probably going to go gray for the blue one if I don’t get it in the next half year
I called the day it was announced and before 1pm the next day (last Friday) they called me and said I got the first one. I had no prior purchase history with that AD either which made it all the more surprising
I really like this release. The FXD line is my favorite Pelagos. The red Pelagos on the dial, unidirectional count-up bezel and black dial and bezel color make a very handsome tool watch. Good job, Tudor. And glad to see you got to spend time on a beautiful beach - I love the white sand and turquoise water of the Florida Panhandle.
marketing, marketing... from TUDOR. The 42 mm TITAN is the modern and disruptive Diver product from TUDOR: first in many points. Maybe due to low success they try the "historical/root" path. it's time to buy the 42mm that should be discontinued soon knowing that it is competing with new modern rolex.
Great video. Good location, history of the piece is covered, cool navy dude with a good story, facts of the watch, analysis of what Tudor could have done better, info on why they didn’t do that, great video quality, compressed in to seven minutes without feeling rushed. You are getting insanely good. And, I really want that watch. I love a crisp black dial with white markers and touch of color.
I own a Pelagos LHD and since I've owned it I've been of the mindset that I'd always own it. I really liked the MN FXD when it came out and it was going to be a purchase down the line because I don't own a blue watch anymore. But after looking at photos/videos of this watch for the past few days I now know that I will be selling my LHD on and buying this. I think this dark grey FXD has a chance of being the greatest tool watch of all time, if it isn't already. For starters, straps are more purposeful than bracelets. But more importantly, the warm brown/green of the strap is just so perfectly dialed in with the warm hues of titanium, even more so than the ivory plots of the LHD. It's also thinner and loses the date function, which are both positives. Yeah, I think this watch is literally the perfect tool watch. There is no genre of watch that has ever been perfected at an affordable price point like this, but I think that's exactly what Tudor has done here.
Lots of people calling this release “boring”. I don’t think it’s supposed to be exciting. It’s a watch designed for military use, not to be a flashy accessory. This has the perfect combination of features. Black, unidirectional bezel, red line of text, US military connection. As the owner of an MN FXD, I’m absolutely going to pick one of these up.
I think it’s boring, not because I was expecting more but rather the amount of press for a color change. Great marketing by Tudor and more power to anywho who likes it, but the coverage feels disproportionate for what I find newsworthy about watches is all.
I love this video. I love the UDT veteran’s story, and the history behind this watch and its design truly makes it special. There’s so much more heritage to this piece than people initially realize.
I sold my regular 42 for the FXD and it was for me personally worth it. It just has more character somehow, but you can’t go wrong with any of them as they are equally great.
Living just down the road from where you filmed this I love hearing the squeaky sand as you walk. I know that sound well, feels like I was right there with you. Wish I had known you were there so I could have bought you a pint!
I love it as well. Harkening back to the old school Tudor mil subs pushes a button for me for sure. The vintage Tudor’s have gotten so expensive this is a great way to get the same vibe at 1/4 the cost! Modern movement too.
Great video!! Thanks for sharing thoughts an opinion on this! A P39 with metas certified heart would be crazy. Just disagree why it should have to be also a GMT to be perfect.
I imagine when a new SEAL passes BUDS and gets assigned to a Team, the Master Chief says to him: Right, go to the quartermaster and pick up your watches. You get a Casio, Luminox, Tudor, Rolex, Bulova, etc. Frogmen must be the most punctual sailors ever. But seriously, it is a testament to what they have accomplished that every brand seems to want to be associated with the SEALs.
Part of the disappointment is that Tudor didnt need to wait years to do this, if all they wanted to do with the FXD was to introduce a black version. This could have been launched this in tandem with the MN variant - black as a regular toolish diver; blue as the special edition MN diver. But they chose not to because Tudor was trying too hard to hype up the MN variant. And now it is trying too hard to hype up the black variant - by narrating about its roots to the Navy Seals. On that note, if Tudor had wanted to leverage its roots with the Navy Seals for this piece, they could also have gone all out with a partnership to have the Trident or DEFGRU engraved on the caseback. But none of that, because its easier (and cheaper) to build a black dial watch on a regular FXD case, and then use a single worded Pelagos to pay homage. Less partnership, less development scrutiny, less cost, more hype. And certainly, METAS certification is missing on this new release. Not surprising though, as giving METAS certification to this piece will likely mean diminishing the resale value of the MN variants. And Tudor wldnt want that, would it. Because Hype sells better than Horological Improvements.
HaHa! Of course Tudor is trying to hype up their new releases. You do understand that they are a business and their number one priority is to make money. The SEALS got what they wanted. The U.S. Navy commissioned this watch. If they wanted the Trident anywhere on the watch it would have been there. The civilian version of this watch will not have the Trident on it.
Hence what I am simply pointing out, is that this watch have absolutely nothing to do with Seal Team Six not DEFGRU. trying to sell it as a throwback (without any throwback) is a very lame duck marketing attempt. Handsome piece nevertheless, with the ultra legible stark white indices and matte black dial / bezel. Just that it isnt a Seal Team Six watch, and it isnt something that requires years to release. Its just a black dial diver. My take is, Tudor saw the hype and allure of a MN-related Pelagos and decided to make a cash-grab move by digging deep (and really deep) into its archives to find something relatable to a black dial diver, with a single red line text.
It is a great addition to the line up. Where will this end I wonder. Can you imagine this in the Tudor 'Harrods' green if history dictates such a colour? The James Stacey versions are for me so wrong. They are not attractive or interesting and very un Tudor. They would never do such a watch. Will the regular Pelagos get the green treatment? Is that too obvious?
You should go to Vieques, PR. Best water and beaches in the world. My God father was an early frogman and they used canteen watches. I have it and that predates them all. The Tudor sub along with the Rolex sub were used. I would say the last or the closest thing you can get with the newer movement would be the 14060m. The Pelagos is an update and looks fantastic in black as it should.
Adrian, are you on track to become a Brit version of Jason Heaton, with more NATO straps around and less under ice diving ? Dive watches, issued watches, military memorabilia, the works. Would be cool.
Awesome video, really cool that you went down there. I can't believe the navy seals are currently using pelagos. Although I wear the black bay 54 it makes me really happy that the watch I own is a Tudor.
I absolutely love it. Innovation and features add distinctiveness but either would take away from the tool function. With this model Tudor have basically finished the quest to find the perfect tool watch having previously come very close. They are done I am done. I want this watch and it’ll be my only pure tool watch. It’s the pepperoni of pizzas. No further ingredients required.
A great vid' on the updated FXD, personably I prefer the 'countdown' bezel as it makes more sense in most real world situations? However, you really need to sort out the squeaking foot ware as it's rather distracting!
You mention the Tudor Submariner and keep overlaying the Black FXD over the veteran talking about his past..... ...... but the watch is just a black version of a two year old modern design. The big issue here is that the veterans watches were Steel, and this is Titanium. Tudor needed a Steel Ceramic Bezel Watch if they were going to try to link it to the US Navy. A black FXD is fine, but Tudor are insulting its customers by trying to link it to the US Navy IMO.
I love the implication by releasing a "normal" version of this that the FXD lugs might become a Tudor standard. Does it become a proof of concept and spread to other brands?
Worth noting that San Martin just released that blue GMT Pelagos design in 39mm Ti... this is a watch people have been asking for for the better part of a decade now, while Tudor have been furiously pumping out stuff nobody wants like the 925 or with 16mm cases. And while I'm not a fan of "homages"/blatant copies of current production watches, the quality of the three hander version (blue, 39mm 2nd gen with date at 6) absolutely blew me away, and truly leaves for dead watches ten times the price, or even more. And they're giving people versions they want that the real brands can't or won't. (I'll be first in line for a blue, date, 39mm Pelagos, 3-hander or GMT)
You’ve got a point. I want the modern Pelagos 39 design but with 20mm lugs. China will make it for me but not Tudor. I feel bad buying Chinese but it’s tempting
Pelagos GMT - no, especially not the fan made design, it's cringe Pelagos Chrono - maybe MN FXD > Black FXD The black one - It's still cool, but I love t he bidirectional bezel of the MN, the iconic blue look and is the only blue watch I currently own and like.
I'm so glad to see rhat video. Looked out for it the last days after your preview. I simply love the "boring" black color with the red text. It is absolutly gorgeous! 👌 thanks for the cool video and hope you have had a great time in Panama City! 👍 see you sunday #AET! ✌️
i like it but it's a big boi and doesn't allow for more different straps so i am out. Good video though! Kinda agree on a Pelagos 39 GMT HOWEVER it needs to be A LOT thinner than the BB Pro.
Nothing wrong with the watch. Nothing special either. I don't think it will be a significant addition to the line but just another color (the most boring one IMO) to choose from.
The pelagos fxd has been being tested by seal team 6 for the last year. They have custom text and strap colors based on squadron (red, blue, silver and gold) that’s why they added the extra seconds dashes on the bezel. Few images were leaked and the swiftly taken down. Is why the brand loosely advertised the us navy but nothing specific.
I totally believe Rolex is killing its own brand and Tudors design is getting better and better. You love what you love. Tudor is already as accurate as a Rolex, so now just work on design. Then it’s R.I.P. Rolex. 😢
You are spoiled - this watch is awesome. Would have liked - could have had... look with your eyes and ditch your expectations. They are clouding your mind
Tudor got kind of boring with this one. I have an original fxd mn23 and I thought of selling it after seeing this release. It makes it less special and it decreases the "uniqueness" of the model in general.
A slimmer "regular" Pelagos with t-fit clasp & METAS movement would be amazing. This is what I'm waiting for from Tudor honestly. That and just more METAS generally...put it in across the BB41 line etc.
All good but I am afraid they might add too much bling to it and ruin the theme behind Pelagos. They almost did it with the 39 and the sunburst dial that attracted people who mainly wanted a shiny Tudor more and cared less about the idea about Pelagos. The very same bitch and complain about the Titanium selection instead of something else, which in the end of the day makes me glad they get filtered the same way FXD annoys and filters them too.
I was in naval special warfare. In my role our saying was "on time, on target, never quit". Appreciate the content from the UDT vet, especially about the importance of time. He's spot on.
.... Are those sandles squeaking in the audio as you walk on the beach? 😅 I paused multiple times and took out my headphones like what on earth is that noise
What a wonderful everyday quality tool watch the Pelagos is. Really ticks all the boxes and pribably the leader in its segment, except for the Rolex cloud stigma it sits under. Hard to determine if it is a good thing or now becoming Tudors curse to be known as the affordable alternative.
@@Bisley1 They need to make a GMT version of this pelagos either pepsi or actually use coke style since so much red in these new releases. The current Pepsi GMT is too thick
I purchased a Pelagos a few weeks ago and if the black fxd wouldn't been available at the time, I think I wouldn't purchased that one instead. I really like the military inspired watches.
fake news? it's all marketing. us military does not wear these as insinuated in the marketing copy. before quartz, yes, military wore mechanical watches. today, tudor pays the us military for a few of them to wear this watch for a few days. us military wears g-shock and suunto.
That’s factually incorrect. These watches were spotted on the wrist of navy seals over a year ago, way before it was made public. Many military units wear mechanical watches.
When are you coming to St., George Utah, and talk watches Brother.. ⌚️ nice looking, Pelagos the The Titanium look sick... , good on you Bro, enjoy Florida Sunshine 🌞.I don't have Pelagos in my collection yet. Some day ,looking forward to own one....
I think the Seiko LX with the Spring Drive diver got better specs than Tudor FXD, LX Spring Drive is made out of Titanium 5 case and brace, with ceramic bezel, inside domed sapphire crystal face, 120 click bezel, 72 hours power reserve complication, date complication, Professional diver 300 meter saturation level, Zaratsu finish is great on the LX, I HAD Titanium 2 metals, Titanium 5 is better on the flesh and hold a better resale value comparing to Steel or Titanium 2 watches. What is your honest review with the Seiko LX and Tudor FXD side by side for specs?Their price is also similar, Chrono 24 is one place to look for pricing, sure there are others, Tudor FXD look cool but, LX has more to offer for the same money, please let me know what you think, thanks.
