Featured in TIR Episode 263 (Part 2 of 2): Dutch saxophonist, singer and composer Candy Dulfer -- well known for her long association with Prince as well as her own distinguished work as a solo artist.
First seen with Prince in his 1989 “Partyman” video, she played on Graffiti Bridge, The Love Symbol Album, Musicology and 3121, and also toured with him extensively. The daughter of jazz saxman Hans Dulfer, Candy is a dynamic live performer who since 1990 has released 12 studio albums and worked with dozens of name acts, including Dave Stewart, Maceo Parker, the Time, Mavis Staples, Aretha, Pink Floyd, Blondie and Sheila E.
Especially exciting is that she has a brand new album; it’s called We Never Stop and includes a collaboration with Nile Rodgers.

Being a huge Prince fan, I really enjoy all of your interviews with Prince alumni Scott. This one with Candy, I've watched a couple of times, and cried along with her when talking about John and Prince. Such a down to earth, beautiful person, and so talented, and you are great at just listening to your guest. Fantastic interview and thanks for keeping Prince's legacy alive. We all need that, it's fills that gap, it fills that void we all miss not having Prince here anymore. 💜💜💜

Wonderful. Thanks Candy. Love the honesty and super personal memories. Your dad breaking the speed limit to get your horn to the Prince gig! Priceless. What a musician Prince was, IS! A one off genius, we only get them ever so often, Bach, Beethoven, Mozat, Prince, you know what I mean. The new album We Never Stop is super lovely and funky and I had to double take sometimes as it has such a strong Prince sound to it. If you can, please come to England to gig. Lots o' love. Keep groovin' x

Probably my favorite ' Prince' associated interview ever. What a lovely person " Candy' is.

I like that she was transparent. Usually Prince would go after the Ass. In this case he didn't. He was respectful. He knew that Candy wasn't interested in Fame . He knew the priviliged life she had. Plus he taught her to be strong. Prince understood that in life you keep going. Because, the opportunity is there for the taking. I love that she admits to that ,it was a different culture she was dealing with. They loved him so much. She is so sweet. I brought one album from her. It was incredible.

@@skygazer6898 okay. I'm not a prude. Neither that Holier than thou. So I will not remove the truth. I think. I've heard many women said it exactly like I phrased it. It's only semantics. I have nothing but respect for women. For the record.

Thank you Scott for sharing and the great Candy thank you too. I love prince the most and continue to be in Ahh of him. Yes he was human and sometimes cruel. He could of gotten another drummer to replace John for some time to let John grieve over his loss and to be there for his daughter's mother's loss. Prince should of said "when you feel better give me a call ". Its not up to him to decide, if John ever plays drums again or not. I think prince had so much emotional pain that maybe it took some away if he made others feel emotional pain. Same when he wouldn't let shelia attend her grandmother's funeral, because she was on tour with prince. He could of replaced her for a few days. Same when he wouldn't let Bobby Z. have his wedding day for the whole day. Of course he didn't physically make these band members stay put, but he "Arm chair managed " them too. I mean "how many times does your grandmother pass away "? You can't ever have that day back to redo. Candy didn't mention the song prince wrote for her or co/wrote? Maybe he didn't give her a song?

Like Janes Brown, Prince ran a tight, unyielding ship.

This was a great interview! I'd never heard Candy interviewed before, she was very generous with her insights, you could have done another few hours talking about her thoughts on playing with Maceo, Sheila, Van Morrison, Nile Rodgers etc .... also, Prince hadn't heard of Fela Kuti? That was an interesting aside.

Candy talking about John's baby girl drowning upset me. I heard Scott Baldwin mention that when the little girl died, John was on the phone talking to his wife, when Prince shouted out " John, get over it". I kind of lost a bit of love for Prince when I heard that as there is nothing worse in this world than losing a child. Other people that worked with Prince have said in interviews, Prince would always pick on John. Baldwin said Prince was a deeply flawed human being, but are not all geniuses? Great interview with Candy. Lovely lady

I agree with u. I’m a huge fan but I guess he lacks empethy. On the other hand he never asked for empethy himself eventhough he was in so much pain later in his career.

I don't get the "lesson" she learned from prince about why he dressed up clownish and wouldn't let John go mourn his daughter. What does being African American have to do with that?

I think she was referring blacks having to overcome unimaginable hardships to persevere in the face of tragedy or any other obstacles, referencing how they overcame slavery.

I think it was Prince wanting the show to go on, despite a poor child dying
