Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 51 (Part 1 of 2; see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Ma... ): Featured in this episode is keyboardist-composer-producer Matt Fink, who as Dr. Fink spent 12 years from 1979-1991 as a member of Prince’s band the Revolution, and contributed to numerous other projects. Aside from Morris Hayes - who spent 20 years of mostly continuous service with the New Power Generation and who has also been a guest on TRUTH IN RHYTHM - Fink worked closely with Prince longer than any other associate. He logged thousands of rehearsals, recording sessions, concerts, aftershows, film & video shoots, and TV appearances with arguably modern times’ most gifted & accomplished musician. Among the classic albums from that were Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade. Key tracks and hits from those records and B-sides include “Head,” “When You Were Mine,” “Let’s Work,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious,” “DMSR,” “Lady Cab Driver,” “Erotic City,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Darling Nikki,” “Paisley Park,” “Raspberry Beret,” “She’s Always in My Hair,” “17 Days,” “Pop Life,” “Kiss,” “Mountains,” “Anotherloverholenyohead,” “Girls and Boys” and many more.
Fink was the only member of the Revolution to stay on after the band was dissolved, and also received credits on Prince’s Sign O the Times, Black and Lovesexy albums, among others. Over his career, he has acquired more than 30 RIAA Diamond, Platinum and Gold record awards, and MTV, Grammy and American Music Awards. Following Prince, he built his own Minneapolis-based facility called StarVu Studios and expanded into numerous projects that included Ultrasound, his 2001 solo album. Fink continues to be very active today, and beginning after Prince’s tragic 2016 death he reunited with fellow Revolution members to perform tribute concerts dedicated to their fallen former leader.
Here, Fink talks about working with one of the most creative forces music has ever known, the chemistry, personalities and talent of the Revolution, some of the amazing albums and songs of that period, unforgettable memories and highlights, dealing with the loss of Prince and carrying the legacy forward, and more.

Years ago after the Revolution was disbanded. I called Dr. Finks studio to see what the rates were for a gig. Well, the person who answered the phone was Dr. Fink... I was nearly speechless.... He graciously talked to me as a fan for 30 minutes... I got to ask him every freakin' question about the break up of the Revolution at the time. It was one of my coolest moments in my life.

Just find it admirable that all those involved with Prince, including himself, knew who they were, what they were, where they were from and.....where they were going. It's just a shame Prince went out the way he did. Playing Mr. Organic all those years when we knew otherwise but denied it ....while Vanity was blowing out her kidneys in the dressing room next door. It was the death of Vanity that did him in. It was even written about, albeit esoterically, in a New Yorker article. That final show "some of my friends are gone"...... the emergency plane landing, the real DOCTOR that sent his son instead. Seemed some real people really TRIED to help but they were a day late and a dollar short...and they should have nothing to feel guilty about.

Listening to Matt Fink interviews are much more rewarding than Andre Cymone. It's like Cymone, who actually lived under the same roof as Prince early on, made a concerted effort to avoid saying anything worthwhile about him knowing how much his fans want to hear it. He might as well flat out said, "Yeah, I know a lot about him but I'm not here to talk about him." Listening to him went from boredom to frustration really quick. It sucked.

Glad you DIDN'T become a doctor, Dr. Fink!! I'm also really glad Prince decided to work with so many smart, talented white people so it wouldn't be considered just a black thing later. That was a brilliant move. Sly Stone apparently had that same insight. Wish he had taken the same approach with NPG. It makes his legacy more accessible to the mainstream population of the world. Off subject, winter in Minneapolis sounds too painful to endure purposely. Living there intentionally seems ridiculous.

36:40 I knew Prince had some B-Ball skills. but Picture that Let’s play base ball and we’d go and play softball Let’s take a basketball break Let’s play Ping-Pong Let’s go roller skating. Let’s go to the Y-M-C-A and go swimming for exercise. - Prince. I’ve heard some of this stuff in other interviews but go get Dr. Fink to dig a little deeper. Well done.

Great interview with a more than great musician/artist.About the demo ,the one man band,the one he forgets is Mike Oldfield,i think he was the first one man band on record. What Prince and Mike Oldfield have more in commen,is both played a Gibson L6 S de Luxe.

A great interview. Sonny T, Prince's NPG bassist (also a talented multi-instrumentalist) said Prince had perfect pitch though, "Oh man! Photographic memory. Anything you played for him, he could repeat it. I've never heard anything like it. He's definitely got perfect pitch. Anything he hears, he can play. - Sonny Thompson, "The Guitarist Formerly Known as Prince", Alan Di Perna, Guitarworld - Nov 1994 It seems Prince liked to keep people guessing, and told an interviewer that he didn't have perfect pitch...

Prince should've had Andre Cymone sign a non-compete agreement at the outset. He would've had nothing to gain by quitting!! lol Susan Rogers said members of the Revolution also later began trying to compete with Prince instead of supporting him. I actually understand that though. Who wants to stay a sideman forever?

I wished that Scott would have asked Matt a few obvious follow ups the way he did during the excellent Gayle Chapman interview. I get that he's excited to let the guests know that he was in the audience for specific historic tour performances, but that insistence contributed to some missed opportunities here. Other than that, very well done.

@@FunknstuffNet In particular, I was referring to Fink's description of Wendy and Lisa having a disagreement with Prince that begins around 42:20. At 43:13, I just _knew_ that you were about to ask if he cared to elaborate on the nature of the disagreement that precipitated Coleman and Melvoin wanting to leave. Although it's not clear that Fink wanted to go into specifics, that's what I _wanted_ you to ask - and I was so sure that would be your next question. LOL! The other was relatively minor. It had to do with Fink incidentally wearing essentially the same outfit as Rick James onstage. I figured that you would follow up by asking him to describe the duplicate outfits. I'm relatively certain that I remember the answer from a nearly 30-year old interview Fink and Rosie Gaines did with _Keyboard Magazine_ in 1991, but I'm not sure that other viewers/listeners know about Fink's initial onstage personas that preceded the hospital scrubs. Thanks for your response, and for getting Chapman, Colman, Fink, Jellybean Johnson, and numerous others to agree to these detailed interviews. Cheers
@FunknstuffNet
@FunknstuffNet 4 года назад
I believe it was Fink's prison getup, which ironically James would wear for real many years later. www.rockinhouston.com/images/00230-n-13abg5nyf60794ajpg/26278?type=performers&subtype=Years&typeUnid=710&page=1 twitter.com/PrinceMuseum/status/559813853916450816/photo/2

@@FunknstuffNet Correct. According to the aforementioned 1990-91 interview: In the beginning, Fink indicated that he had been unable to come up with an outfit that Prince liked, so Prince handed him an authentic army issue khaki paratrooper jumpsuit. Matt added a pair of space-age sunglasses. This was the outfit Fink wore for their first video (although I can't seem to find an image of it). Next, for the _Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad_ video, Fink rented a gold satin tuxedo with black lapels and went shirtless underneath it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fPaYtVJouYA.html After that, Matt first wore the prison stripes for their appearance on _American Bandstand._ This continued until Prince told him to find a new outfit once James began wearing similar inmate stripes while on tour. It was at this point that Fink selected hospital scrubs with a surgical mask, and thus became, 'The Doctor.'
