Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 111 (Part 1 of 2; see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Ro... ): Bassist and composer Rodney “Skeet” Curtis, who has spent more than 40 years holding down the bottom for Parliament-Funkadelic and associated acts. Among the all-time classics his bass virtuosity can be heard on are Parliament’s Motor Booty Affair, Funkadelic’s One Nation Under a Groove, The Brides of Funkenstein’s Never Buy Texas From a Cowboy, The P-Funk All-Stars Live at the Beverly Theater and George Clinton’s The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership (TAPOAFOM).
He has also played with drummer Dennis Chambers and been a longtime sideman for legendary funk saxophonist Maceo Parker, who he had just completed a six-week tour of Europe with. Here, Skeet recounts those classic P-Funk years, discusses his unique playing style, his connection with Maceo and much more.

Plus he did one of then most recognized basslines in the history of FUNK on the Whatnauts - help is on the way. When a bassline is that pivotal or recognizable to a track you should get writers credit for sure.

Mr. Curtis you are one of the greatest bass player musicians I have ever heard. Thank you for your contribution to music. I have been studying a lot of your live performances and your spontaneous reaction to music or what you hear is unlike anything I have seen. Your bass playing is very humbling.

Wow thank you so much for this, Skeet was always one of those unsung heroes of P funk that I could never find so much about. I was hooked once I saw him rip the Funkentelechy live solo(I really don't get why it was dropped from the repetoir after that tour), After funkentelechy I started looking and listening for him from then on. Him and Dennis together were incredible in the 80's. Also it's fun to hear how much Marcus Miller appreciates him!!

Skeet wrote some of my favorite songs! I’m curious if he remembers the process and experience of recording some of those records like Mr. Melody Man, Birdie, and Party Up In Here

Man this is one of my favorite P-Funk bassist. Great interview. I learned a lot from all the P-Funk bassist. He touched on developing your own style and I did that but I stole so much from them I owe funk support to them. I hear a lot of faux Jaco's now and I wanna tell them to use what you learned from his playing and put you into it. Funny is there's a bassist that is definitely influenced by Skeet here. He is good at it too but Skeet got some sheet no one else has. He is one of my teachers. Love him. Keep doing these for us wannabes because we need to hear the stories and the wisdom. Thanks Dr. GX. I'm all ears and grining from tooth to shiny tooth!
