#thelifeandsadending #superman A mini bio about the life and career of actor George Reeves. He most famously player Superman in "The Adventures of Superman".
We're about the same age. Superman was my favorite comic book series, leading to the Superman show being my favorite TV show. I thought Reeves did a great job of portraying the character. What I didn't realize is how he felt the responsibility towards his young fans so much as to refrain from bad habits (such as smoking) in their presence. We're all flawed. Whatever his flaws may have been, you have to respect a man who tried to set an example for kids who looked up to him. RIP, Mr. Reeves. The world could use more men who truly care about the welfare of children.
George Reeves WAS Superman. My favorite show when I was a kid. On a visit to my Aunt's house,I wore my Superman costume under my jeans and shirt. My Mom caught me and embarrassed the crap out of me. But, I wasn't stupid enough to jump off the roof thinking I could fly.
I L-O-V-E-D Superman. Couldn't wait for the next adventure. Better than the cowboy/westerns. And still love it more than the movies. George Reeves was and IS THE ONLY SUPERMAN. I grew up wondering what he was going to do next to make things right, again.
George had charisma. Everything was going to be all right again after Superman (George) came on the scene. He left us too soon. I don't think it was his idea to leave us, as I feel someone else was responsible for his death.
HE WAS MURDERED. THE GUN SHELL WAS FOUND UNDER HIM. HE WAS A GORGEOUS MAN AND THE BEST SUPERMAN EVER. I HAVE ALL THE EPISODES ON DVD AND WATCH THEM EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO.
Superman was also my favorite TV program. I remember sending away for a Superman T-shirt. In the fall of 1955 The Adventures of Superman TV show came on at 7 PM in my area. One night I started to watch the show but my mother said I must do my homework first (I was in the 2nd grade). I told her I would do my homework after the show went off at 7:30. She insisted the show didn't come on until 7:30. Well, I was made to do my homework. At 7:30 I turned on the TV only to see the closing credits. I got so mad I told my mother I was going to run away. I bolted out the front door of the house and ran about a mile, my mother chasing me. She finally caught up to me, telling me she was going to tell my father. I told her to tell him all she wanted, as she was wrong (lol!). Superman was very real to me. He was my hero back then. He had the same effect on my friends.
..Didn't realize he was in Gone with the Wind. Interesting... taken from us too soon. I wondered way there weren't more episodes. Never asked since i was a child at the time. Very sad that he died, however/whoever at a very young age. 😢
Great info again, great actor, a natural for superman. Forgot he was in with my favorite actor Jimmy Cagney in the Strawberry Blonde !! Keep the clips coming. THANKS 🕳️🕳️
Really sad story of George. I never watched Superman series when it first ran. Later i would see it and i enjoyed it alot. He sure had an interesting life he really towered over his mother didn't he? RIP George.
Love it, Steve, especially your picture as a little guy. Hollywoodland was a good movie, and you are right, we probably will never know how he died. Thanks
George Reeves was Not murdered nor did he commit suicide. He accidentally shot himself. He was intoxicated in his bedroom, playing with a freshly oiled pistol that had a hair trigger. It was a perfect storm for that event to happen. It's sad this accident happened because he was the best Superman and a really great guy. But accidents do happen.
Wow! Thanks for all the history on George Reeves. Some I didn't know and we will never find out why he really died 😔 I loved that show too. So many of those things already in reruns by the time I saw them. 😂 Thanks Steve 😊
He looked like Errol Flynn in that one, black & white photo! He had a very diverse career. Sad his one role that made him famous seemed to be a curse 😢
we ALL hope your sad ending doesn't come for a lonnnnng time brother. I too watched those reruns after school but in the 70s, along with the Lone Ranger reruns. take care, appreciate your videos!
Loved the picture of you as a boy Steve, too cute 😸 yes, I watched the series at about the same age on our black and white TV also, and loved it. His death was just truly troubling and tragic 😿
I love all the stuff you have in the background there! Very cool! I enjoyed this episode about George Reeves. I remember seeing him as Superman in an episode of "I Love Lucy" as well.
I really loved "Superman" on TV as a youngster. I always asked my parents to find me a frame of glasses so I could be Clark Kent and then take them off dramatically and become Superman! 😂 I really got into the TV character but was always confused by how muscular the comic version of Superman was compared to the television character. The conspiracy theories that loop around this tragic ending still resonate after all these years. As a young boy I did not understand the "reasons" why this happened, I just dealt with the sadness for a very long time. On a side note, my twin brother said Superman's hair never got messy flying because he used Vitalis! So my brother naturally sis as well. 🤣 Cheers Steve and thanks for this post! 👋
Wow. The Superman show was a favorite of mine as a wee tot. I remember hearing about his “suicide” with urban legend intimating it was because of his career difficulties being typecast as The Man of Steel. Later, I heard enough to take the murder theories more seriously - there’s definitely more here than meets the eye. But his early career! I had no idea he was in Gone With The Wind, among others. I’m going to have to rewatch these now, looking for the Superman. 😢 Thank you for this enlightening segment - keep up the excellent work!
When we saw reruns of Mr Ed I always thought he bore a bit of a resemblance to Alan Young! Of course, we were also watching from a small black and white set for many years! Haha!
Thanks Steve. I still enjoy catching an episode of Superman from time to time, they're still quite enjoyable. His death is still sad, and I think he was probably murdered.
I remember standing on the front lawn of our house when my brother walked up from the street and told me that Superman killed himself. I was 6 years old.
I BELIEVE HE WAS MURDERED. HE WAS A GORGEOUS MAN AND THE BEST SUPERMAN EVER. HAVE ALL EPISODES ON DVD AND WATCH THEM EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. THANK YOU FIR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO. 💞
I watched The Adventures of Superman back in the mid 70s. Wasn't it a little curious that he stood there when he was being fired at, but he moved out of the way if the gun was thrown at him?
Like you Superman was my favorite show in the 60’s. Since it was long before social media I had no idea he had even passed until many years later. Now knowing the facts of his death, the show being renewed and the salary increase along with national fame and the suspicious forensic evidence at the scene I really doubt he committed intentional suicide but sadly we will never know. Thanks again for your content Steve!
Superman is the original superhero. Always coming to the rescue unless hampered by the dreaded kryptonite. Something is fishy about his death. Always smiling with a fiance, George Reeves wasn't about to commit suicide.
Superman. Unforgettable in that role. No matter how many renditions Hollywood makes of the same, he always comes to mind and is the standard by which I evaluate that character. As a kid, I parked myself in front of the television every afternoon to make sure I caught every episode of Superman, Batman, Godzilla, Bewitched, Road Runner and all the other shows from the Golden Era of television. Today, we get woke, gender-bending crap.
I remember my older brother telling me that Reeves actually thought that he had become Superman and had attained all his powers and to prove it he shot himself in the head thinking that the bullets would bounce off ....needless to say, I was very confused at the time, I think I was I was maybe 8 years old ...
George Reeves' Superman, and any of his work, was a bit before my time. But I have always found it somewhat fascinating that there is still some ambiguity in regard to his legitimate manner of death. As you have mentioned here, I have heard suicide. And then others have said murder. And still others have said it was an accident. I too don't think we will ever know for certain, especially since any and all who may have been there, or who were in the know, have most likely all come to their own sad endings. Or at least I would assume so, given how many years ago it happened. Regardless of what really happened, it's sad. He was so young, and I'm sure he would have had many great years of acting ahead of him if he weren't gone so soon.
Yep, me too Never missed superman. Its Crazy how his death was brushed under the rug so to speak. I've read everything I could find on him. S0 sad. ( superman and the mole men )
And the clay people,in the old Flash Gordon movies they freaked me out,and so did Ming the merciless! At 75 years old I am sure glad it ain’t dark in here!
The Produces could have written an ending, where they built a spaceship to find a compatible planet. Jimmy also gets married before all 4, plus the crew take off from earth. Earth Amania !
THIS SHOULD HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN OPTION! NOT An ENDING, BUT A BEUETIFUL, beginning, with technical science, to have a TELEGRAPA SPACE IINE to communicate to Earth. from Earth Amania! As Mr. White, talks from earth.
He was killed by Toni Mannix`s husband, Eddie, because he wanted then to both go out with other. Yes, it seems weird, but her husband condoned the affair. Eddie Mannis came from Fort Lee, NJ, and his boyhood home is now part of the Fort Lee Public Library.
Excellent video. I saw that episode recently with Jimmy and Lois flying. So cool . ❤And dang it ,I do hate it when there’s an unsolved murder. I love Superman episodes. 🥲😇 ….. 🤫🫣🤭 PS thanks for sharing your very young picture 👍
I always found it amazing how George Reeves girlfriend had the same double L initials Lenore Lemon, just like Superman's girlfriends in the comics Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lori Lemaris etc
