literally cried from nostalgia from my teen years lol. Myspace, limewire, flip phones and techno. I'm from Austria and my family would go back and I would hear these songs in summer when I was 13, 14 and then come back home to Atlanta but nobody cared or liked techno. I often raved in my room to these songs when I was lonely. I remember one particular time it was a bright summer day, I had all the windows open I just built my desktop and put windows xp on it and immediately installed limewire and downloaded a bunch of songs. My crush had just rejected me, my parents weren't home, so I skipped school and danced in my room for like 3 hours. It's a bittersweet memory, but alongside great ones in Austria hanging out with my cousins and friends dancing and swimming in the lake, it's a source of such joy. Now I'm in my mid 30's I've had surgery on my shoulder a 3rd time and have 3 herniated discs, work 45-55 hours a week just to not have enough money to afford a house and just feel so old... I just want to go back even for a moment.
Awesome story, as someone who's 32 I share similar memories from this era tied with this music 🥹 You're lucky you got to go back to Europe at least! Hope you heal and get to enjoy life to the fullest again.
Alice deejay, Scooter, Daft Punk, Yves Larock, Eifel 65, Robert Miles, Zombie Nation, Guru Josh Project, Faitlhless, Gigi D'agostino, September, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, David Guetta, Antiloop...the list goes on. Late 90s early 2000s had so many good bands. USA was late to the party of usual and back then it was rediculed and called Euro trash in USA.
Tiësto in Concert 1 and 2 in 2003 and 2004 were the ultimate representation of the pinnacle of electronic music and party culture of all time. Nothing like it has ever been seen since, quality, novelty and innovation reigned above all and Tiësto as a symbol of that era made perfect sense, it was totally genuine.
Dragostea Din Tei had such a grip on culture it got people around the world memorizing Romanian lyrics word for word like it was something we just know 😂
Dragostea Din Tei was not only popular when it first came out. But it has been sampled by a lot of other artists over the years, it has been translated in nearly every language imaginable, and it is the catchies, most fun song that has ever been created. I freaking love it, and I will stand by this statement forever
As a Dutch person, Adagio for Strings for Tiësto is so weird. It's his biggest hit that never was in the charts in the Netherlands. People here are more familiar with Flight 643, Lethal Industry, Traffic and others.
I was born in 1980, this song reminds me of a life without burden. Without internet, without hoax news, without social media. But living happily, and when having an appointment always on time😊
A fun fact about All I ever wanted by Basshunter is its original swedish title "Vi sitter här i Venten och spelar lite DotA" which translates to "We´re hanging out in Ventrilo, playing some DotA". His other hit "Now that you´ve gone" was originally about an IRC b*t named Anna.
As a near-40 year old man that's just stumbled across this, seeing these "kids" enjoying the EDM music I was clubbing to in 2002-2007/8 brings an enormous smile to my face
Call on Me technically doesn't sample Valerie from the original record, as the studio would not clear the sample for Eric Prydz. But Eric presented it to Steve, who was impressed and redid his entire vocals, and that's whats sampled. Which is why the wikipedia entry says "based on" not sampled.
He also took the melodic hook / use of sample from Thomas Bangalter and DJ Falcon who would play that sample the same way a couple years prior to Eric Prydz releasing it.
They did what we all did when we first heard it, we were intrigued and were just trying to figure it out. It takes a minute but when you get it, you're in and you're never leaving.
no, it is all i ever wanted. and allmost every song basshunter have like Boten anna, Dota, all i ever wanted etc, and many other artists are based on one of the most imprtant edm songs ever made. called daddy DJ XD
15:03 - yes, exactly, thank you. I find it kinda ironic that most of the reactors didn't know Tiesto's "Adagio for Strings" (at least at first), one of the few songs in this video that I would actually "rave" to 😅Also maybe "Sandstorm" (though overplayed). But to e. g. "Everytime We Touch", "Stereo Love" or "Dragostea Din Tei" I personally don't "rave" to, I "just" dance (bc. they are probably rather mainstream radio friendly, I guess) 😅✌
Oh come on. Whenever a DJ drops the "Everytime We Touch" at a festival or rave, we all go wild! Classic, and every DJ has their own flip to it based on who they are (hardstyle, dubstep, happy hardcore)
As a 40 year old european who grew up on Electronic music it's so funny to me that they say its all "EDM" - the picked Songs are several different genres. But props to them that they knew each song 🫶
It’s funny cause these songs (big dance music songs generally) weren’t actually mainstream hits in America at the time right? In terms of the actual main charts, they were across pretty much of all Europe though
@kJ922-h3j alot of them were VERY popular in North America. They may not have charted but they got radio play. With the exception of Adagio for Strings, the Numa Numa song or whatever. Alot of it can also be attributed to underground distribution of pirated music between students. That's how I heard alot of these at first back in the day. I was kinda shocked DHT- Listen To Your Heart wasn't on this list too
Ah yes, the adagio track from Tiesto... Tiesto in Concert in the Gelredome in Arnhem the Netherlands in 2004... I was there, right at the front ... Been there for two years in a row, very impressive events. Awesome memories!
Gosh I love these.. we need more EDM reactions.. still many iconic songs left... Destination Calabria, Infinity from Guru Josh Project, Oh La La from David Tavare, Pursuit of Happiness. I bet they wouldn't be able to resist
Nope. Original was made by Samuel Barber in 1936 and there are so many remixes and cover versions. Tiesto's one is maybe the most commercial known, but definitely not the best. I will always prefer William Orbit - Barbers Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix). Second thing is that Tiesto almost never produced his tracks, that goes to Dennis Waakop Reijers and this track is also his work
It’s like coachella but in Europe, so without the posers and about the music! I’m so jealous that you went to the first in concert event, I was at passion around the same time and it was literally shoulder to shoulder. Tiesto knew how to put on a fuckin show!
Fun Fact: Adagio For Strings by Tiesto is one the the top five songs that increase dopamine the most according to a scientific study by the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital.
Also funny that the original Adagio for Strings from 1938 is ranked 2nd. So no wonder why the Tiesto version is that high. The classical version certainly does things to you as well.
It was huge in Canada too. It baffles me that it seems like things stop in Canada and do t hit the U.S until later. Maybe it's because Canada still has a lot of British influence in some parts? No idea. Lol
Early 2000s EDM reminds me of when my older brother got his drivers licence and every time that i would need to be the car with him (eg: driving to and from school every day), he would have a mix cd of EDM songs on repeat. 😂
It's so cute they think this is "raving". Bless their sweet little hearts. This is pop music to us Rave Kids. Props though for having my favorite actual rave song listed....Adagio For Strings TIESTO.
I was hoping to hear and thought "As the Rush Comes" - Motorcycle [2003], Gabriel & Dresden. So many great remixes of this song as well. Also, Armin Van Buren, Ida Core (Let me think about it), ATB (Ecstacy). A great list though, and fun to watch the reactions!
I thought I'd managed to leave my wild EDM days behind but congrats you just revived it... gonna have to make a playlist now damn it. Also listening to Americans talk about Europeans as if EDM wasn't ten THOUSAND times more popular over here than in the U.S. lmao
14:58 I will literally be crying myself to sleep knowing none of this lot had a clue about Adagio… 2003 white label, 2004 release and dwarfed any version released since
