That's my boy, my initial instinct was to help him but I held back because I knew it was the best thing for him. I like to think he got the Mike Tyson Therapy session. Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.
Not even difficult. He needs to learn, and they need to get that backbone or that dog wont be able to go out in public, even get put down. Glad they came to a no nonsense trainer.
Tyler Kulhanek. Your boy is beautiful! I have a male and female heeler and currently in this same position. My girl needs this from another dog. She is fear aggressive with other dogs. Slowly trying to work on her confidence. I need to find a local trainer as good as this guy!

That is how dogs communicate ! If the dog is snapping at people, it should not be in a domestic setting, like so many other breeds that should not be in domestic settings. They are working dogs!
Sorry people as strong as prince is, never underestimate a heeler, I’ve been around them for generations. They are one of the smartest dogs in the world, that dog knew he had no chance with a muzzle on. I’ve seen heelers totally dominate not only 2500lb bulls but other big dogs. Heelers are part dingo, they are tough as hell.
I can't wait to see this dog's progression. They are quick to avoid being kicked by cattle but Prince's quick reaction incredible. What a beautifully trained dog looks like.
@@user-sj9mj3bf2m my female rottie does it naturally to her brother, who is larger than her, and defiantly larger than Prince, when he gets amped up. Never trained her to do it. So I think it’s a natural behavior.
they do it naturally, the trained part is restraint and obedience when the owner calls it off. For example i have a Pitbull and we recently we got an american bully and it was very energic and just wanted to suck other dogs tits and bite their legs. My Pitbull corrected it but it bit the puppy hard, it was ugly.

it is a sign of a very strong stoic character. My Stafforshire Terrier was same and we trained also with Clients...you need a stoic intelligent strong dog to train others!

Cattle dogs are brutish working dogs, now most of the pet ones are probably bred down a bit. Not the best for taking to the dog park or home depot. Someone described the blue healer as "they've probably met everyone they're ever going to like already."
All that cattle dog learned was that he cant fight with his muzzle on. He was attempting to remove it in the grass. His misplaced aggression is the result of being under stimulated. In order to extinguish bad behavior, the dog has to learn that activities will be on the schedule provided he can contain his aggression. As soon as he displays it he gets a boot in the ass and is removed from the activity. He will learn real fast. That little shitkicker in video would willingly work 12 hour days with nothing but water. He could be a boat dog, a walking dog, a cattle dog, a frisbee dog, but not a couch dog. I sled with eurohound variants (heeler x GSHP x husky). If they fight they get left home. Your aggressive dog is often your best dog, but they must be tempered and you cant be arbitrary.
@@rayr4320 You give too much credit to dogs if they think the muzzle is preventing them from fighting/biting. They only know something is on their face and that's it. Joel himself has said he's seen muzzled dogs with mouths wide open trying to bite but they're not smart enough to realize the muzzle is preventing full contact, their brains are just too stimulated.
@@stealth5758 I guess I give them too much credit. The bite can certainly be a reflex action and when dog is in fight mode you will see attempts to bite, but it doesnt mean they dont understand muzzling. Working with sled teams, a misbehaving dog understands it is muzzled. Other members of team will then tease it. They understand too.
A few years ago I was delivering to one of the horse farms on my route, and the lady at the farm had a new Cattle Dog. All the other dogs knew me but this one was barking at me. The lady came out, told me to shake her hand and then she turned to the dog and said "See? Friend.". After that, the dog was perfectly fine with me being there every week. It even joined in with the other dogs (different breeds) who wanted me to throw their tennis balls for them to fetch, or get some pieces of carrot that I'd usually take out of the bag for the horses that were in their stalls near the feed room.
The Doberman I got from a breeder in Paso Robles 1993 was just like your Prince. All of the Doberman I have gotten since have been rescues. I very much appreciate your Prince and his character: a very rare and special thing in your guy!
Good for you. I adopted a female from a local shelter. She was very small, extremely thin (26 lb and 20% underweight), very wary of strangers and her clock was getting very short. I couldn't leave her to that fate. She appears to have avoided permanent organ damage but her healthy weight is only half the norm and she often gets mistaken for a German. It's been a pleasure to watch her come out of her shell and go from humans are something to fear to I'm willing to give you a chance. She seems particularly fond of toddlers.
Prince is exactly the dog that my dog-reactive lab/pitbull needs. I try to do the higher level correction, but I know a dog needs to do it at this point! My dog is like this cattle dog is with the audacity to go after another dog for no reason! I love how Prince did just enough and didn't go too far! My biggest fear with letting another dog correct mine is that they won't stop and will actually hurt my dog!
@upgrader99 I keep my dog muzzled any time I am working with him with other dogs. He also is always leashed. I understand your concern, but it's unwarranted here as I have never said I subject anyone or any dog to his issues. I also disagree with the idea of not allowing my dog to be around other dogs. What other way do you think a dog can be desensitized to other dogs if they arent allowed to be around them? I work with dogs that I trust with him and he has gotten far better than when I adopted him. However, like I said in my original comment, I am a big supporter of dogs learning from other dogs and believe my dog needs a good dog correction. I just am not comfortable bringing him around dogs that would likely put him in his place because I'm not sure they would stop when needed like Prince does.
You need to get a professional to help you and your dog since he\she is a pit mix if he does real damage they will see the "scary dangerous pit bull" stereo type and will have no protection that a dog like a german shepard or husky that have the "meant for families" written all over them. It is an unfortunate truth but there is no denying it. the pit bull is a beautiful breed and do not deserve it but the media still pushes this
@J Devantier I have been working with a professional, just haven't been able to find one with a dog like Prince to use as well. Everything has unfortunately been dog obedience and desensitization through exposure from a "distance" or through a fence. I plan on bringing him out to California for Joel and Prince to do what I have otherwise been unable to do. I agree, pitbulls (even mixes) have a bad reputation that doesn't always match the dog. My boy is an absolute sweetheart and does fortunately have some dog friends that he is wonderful with, it just took a long time to get him to trust those dogs. I believe he will get there with every dog, I just don't have the skill set/trainers here that do what Joel does. I absolutely love what he has Prince doing for dogs and after watching what he did with the dog in this video, I'm 10000% confident Prince is what my dogs needs to get over his nonsense once and for all!

I had a case a year back with a dog like this and found it impossible to get through to her and really knew that I needed a prince to correct her as she was too strong for any other method. Thanks for covering this. Prince executed to perfection.
FABULOUS video. I love that you post videos like this… It’s probably one of the only avenues for ppl to learn about dogs’ body language and behaviour from actual videos, not just theory. Love your work, Joel… and Prince’s too. What an amazing boy he is.
Good for Prince who's always a gentleman! I never saw him do that, it made me happy. I don't play with dogs when it comes to bad behavior, nip that real quick, you gotta do this with people too. People walk all over you when you don't have boundaries and that's exactly what Prince did. Put some RESPECT on his name. 👑
This is what I think many dog owners need to know. Well timed and well adjusted corrections. From the minimal, repetitive corrections that help develop behaviors to the all out physical, aggressive corrections that stop bad behaviors that could result in serious injuries or death. I especially wish some people who attend dog parks could see this very video. It teaches both what it takes to stop aggressive behavior and how the dogs communicate what they don't like. Take it with a grain of salt because dogs like Prince are rare, but most people can't interpret dog to dog corrective behaviors.
This is exactly the point I want to make. Most owners I’ve met don’t understand dog to dog corrections. They either let full on aggression escalate into a fight with the approach of “let them figure it out” OR they go into a full on drama “your dog attacked my dog” when it was very clear it was a correction. When their dog didn’t get the several more subtle signs to stop.
Cattle dogs are tough tough dogs. The herding instinct in them is so strong. I got my foot tagged by one as a kid and it bruised up my whole foot through the shoe. He seemed very surprised that he would get the reaction he got from Prince. The amazing thing is to see Prince know the EXACT amount of pressure it would take for him to get the point and then it was done.
They’re extremely tough. They go toe to toe with cattle and bulls, something people forget. I have a Heeler/Border collie mix that looks very similar to this dog. They’re strong willed, but great dogs. Very one owner oriented, mine sticks to me like glue not so much my wife. He’s gone toe to toe with my GSD when they first met. All good now.
Way to go, Prince! You have zero tolerance for bullying and you made that clear without presenting a seminar. One perfect correction set and enforced the standard of behavior.
Prince is a super smart dog. You can tell he loves helping teach other dogs. I'm sure he feels superior all the time but he's smart enough to understand this is teaching. I am stunned with his ability to understand. Well done.
If you're interested in a cattledog.....I've owned many different breeds thoughout my life but 12 years ago got a cattledog because he was well suited for my lifestyle. He's the toughest, smartest and most active dog I've ever seen. At 12 he can still run 7mi with me, although he naps more now. They're an awesome breed but please please please, if anyone reading this is thinking about one, make sure you're ready to keep them active because if they get bored (mentally or physically) they will find an outlet for that pent up energy. My friends (first time dog owners) thought they'd get one because they liked the way they looked, I tried to warn them... Well they ended up replacing all the cabinets in their apartment before leaving. They aren't for beginner or undisciplined dog owners, people with inactive lifestyles, apartments. They are working dogs and they need a job even if it's something fun like playing fetch for an hour or so a day.
Prince is an amazing dog.. the fact that he knew exactly what to do, how to do it, and when to stop because he got his point across is exceptional. I wish I lived closer to you, so prince can correct my dog.. because I do believe my dog would benefit from another dog correcting her, and I just do not have access to a dog like prince who I would trust enough to do it, without someone getting hurt. Just to be clear my dog is okay with other dogs 85 percent of the time, however she can be bossy and pushy, and has never responded to a correction from another dog, in a positive way. The correction always has to come from me, which stops her at the moment. But not in the long run, she eventually do whatever it is again , usually at the next play session. There is an aspect of me being a better boss. The other aspect is she is smart stubborn German shepherd mix, who does not have enough doggy friends. Thank you Joel for all you do.. I am becoming a better boss with her because of your videos..
i have a two and half year old female doberman that is not about conflict at all, always been submissive and sometimes when dogs bite her back legs when she’s running it makes me think like damn if only she would act a little like prince haha
Years ago, I had a German shepherd bitch who was a genius. There were two young kids in the neighborhood who habitually walked a daschund without a leash, and--as they often are--it was very aggressive. My dog was always leashed, and the smaller dog would immediately go for her throat or face. I finally told the kids that if it happened again, I would turn my dog loose. It did, and I did. The GSD threw the daschund onto the pavement and slammed it down three times. The smaller dog yelped and fled, not a scratch on it. She did it all without once biting down. There never needed to be a repeat performance.
Ugh!!! I've had that happen a couple times in the past with one of my pitbulls. He shook the crap out of them then owners tried to blame me!!! ahhhhh!!!
@@jillsy2815 I'd look into getting a basket muzzle not because of your dog but because of the other owners. Pits are always blamed for this type of shit even when its not their fault. I'd hate for the blame to fall on your dog for no reason.
@@softsounds8453 I thought about that but I've also been rolled up on by stray big dogs--an akita, a GSD, a husky and another pitbull (bigger than mine) and my dog had to defend me and run them off. Too long stories to get into and definitely don't want to argue and yes been blamed before but cops sorted it out and were very nice ugh story too long. He's 10 now and I love him soooo much and he's perfect with humans and babies. I appreciate ur understanding of the struggle. I found him on the street in 2013 --wish I had onown hiw to train him like Joel at that point. In my defense, he was def used for fighting. Sorry so long I did rescue another rednose off the street and using Joel's methods this one is awesome meeting all dogs even if they are barking and crazy plus he loves ppl. My first pit continues to improve it's just slowly. Long story maybe eventually I could take him to Joel but it's a 7-hour drive. He has met several dogs successfully since Joel's methods it's just the strays mainly. My friend lives in a rural part of Ireland. He had 2 rescue greyhounds, who kept in an outhouse and left to roam his land. Every day a farmer would herd his cows past my friends home. He was always accompanied by his dogs. The big ones were quiet and chilled but the little jack Russell was really feisty. Always snapping and snarling at the greyhounds. The greyhounds just watched but never reacted. My friend suggested to the farmer to carry his jack Russell or put him on a lead as he walked past. The farmer refused. Somehow one day Jack Russell got onto my friend's land and the greyhounds ripped it to pieces. The farmer got the police involved but as the dog was attacked on their land said that no action could be taken. My friend felt awful but felt the farmer was in the wrong.
THE point in this vid is that the correction needs to be stronger than the reinforcement (satisfaction) of the undesired behavior! That is the gold nugget right there!!! Thank you for making the video.
Great story, I took in an abandoned 2-3 years Red healer, he was mean, took a while to get him to trust me, but now he's the best, but that's not the story, I also took in my late neighbors Boxer, Shepard mix, a 10 year old fixed Female, and one night my Healer growled at me and my Boxer came unhinged. what I that was an unprovoked attack was actually her protecting me. after this incident my male is a lot calmer. he still plays like hes herding out in the yard but hes not growing or biting anymore. My Elder dog set him straight.
I once had a strangers staffy want to go after my heeler because he showed me lip when I threatened to grab him out of someones yard sniffing around for cat poo while I was distracted talking to the staffy owner.
From Australia here, most of these cattle dogs we have here are nuts. The farm dogs are pretty much left unchecked and do what comes naturally and ones living in suburbs or cities are destructive because they're bored and frustrated.
The comparison to jiu jitsu is spot on, when you're grappling someone you can sense their movements and intentions better than anyone watching ever could, so letting Prince decide when he's done enough makes sense.
@@11Kslingshot I still appreciate the work done by Prince. Prince had an opportunity maul the Cattle Dog too pieces, instead he just kept it down and that a well mannered dog Cattle dogs make terrible pets. They belong on a farm for sure.
"The correction has to be more than the inherent reinforcement that the dog is getting from the behavior." This took me a little while to swallow when I was training my dog, but it was truly a breakthrough concept for me when I actually saw it work. My dog, a 20-lb. schnoodle, is not aggressive, but he is stubborn and used to feel 100% entitled to ignore me when I told him to do something. Case in point: little dude LOVES eating random shit he finds in the yard (leaves, bunny turds, pine needles, etc.) and getting him to stop was impossible until my trainer introduced the ecollar. At first, I was really uncomfortable with the idea of dialing up the ecollar in response to the dog ignoring me. But my trainer only had to demo the technique once to get me on board: start low, and if doggo ignores, dial it up a little. If doggo keeps ignoring, dial it up a little more. Repeat until you've found the level at which eating the bunny turds is no longer enjoyable. Little dude still tries to eat stuff from the ground every once in a while (which I don't think he can entirely help), but you'd better believe that he STOPS when I tell him to stop now.

Ketchup does seem like an odd "supplement." But my dog used to eat chicken poop, but he stopped by himself when we gave him a different food. I bet you've already looked into it, but unless it's some kind of mental disorder, then dietary imbalances could be why this is happening. Sometimes we as mentors don't realize there is a real valid reason for a behavior. It's kinda like this, "my dog keeps pulling on walks but when I used a prong collar it got slightly better." (This could apply to a head collar as well) Entirely not realizing that their walk is primarily on hot pavement. The owner just doesn't think about that part. They don't change the underlying issue, they just make the dog more uncomfortable when they try to defend themselves then when they choose not to. If you haven't gotten the underlying issue resolved, then I'd recommend it! I'd always talk to a veterinarian first though. I've just read that poop eating can be from many things that aren't, "well, my dog is just a bad gross dog."

Timing of correction, correction stronger than original offense, proper origin of correction !!!! Got it! I've learned so much from your videos and from your wisdom. My dog is one of two brothers, Border Collie/hound mix and I have successfully been able to keep a very good partnership with my dog, whereas the brother had to be sent to a 'farm' because my cousin could not handle this type of dog. Thank you! I still have a little work to do, (off-leash work) but I could not have done it without your help! 🙂
The best teacher of a dog is a dog. Prince likely changed the dogs life with that experience in a good way. Very impressive dog correction by him. Clearly didn't go too far and made a huge impression
I had a male Airedale Terrier...Brought home a male Boxer we got from a friend... Long story short...They fought it out...Airedale was an incredible fighter, flipped the Boxer on its back and held him there till he submitted... They were the BEST OF BUDDIES after that! The Airedale was good...He did just enough to gain respect from the Boxer...No bloody mess, at all! 😊
I'm a veterinarian and this is just horrific stuff that this unprofessional self proclaimed trainer is practicing!!! Don't use him or implement his techniques!!!
Interesting to see another dog do this. This is how my partners beagle mix handles any dog that messes with the poultry. I've seen her roll and pin a full blooded adult beagle going in for a kill on a duck. That dog didn't look twice at a bird after that. She is amazing for training puppies not to play with the birds, mostly body blocks and posture. She always seems to respond with the right amount of force, and when it is done it is done and she will go right to playing with them like nothing happened
That was amazing to watch. And it was SO needed. Prince is the master teacher! I did want to ask-how do dogs understand/interpret that handshaking means acceptance? Is it just from watching people do it?
My take on this is that dogs are very attuned to sensing tension and react to the 'vibes' other dogs and humans give off. So if they see their pack leaders really relaxed and smiling then the signal is everything is cool, there's nothing to worry about and/or nothing the dog has to do such as protect the PLs from these new people.
I think they sense if you are at ease or not. For my pitbull rescue, I always say, "Hello, Friend! It's good to see you! Would you like to pet my puppydog?" and if they answer cheerfully, it doesn't even matter that I don't know them or shake their hand. 🐾❤️
Prince would have had his hands full if that cattle dog didn’t have a muzzle on. My first cattle dog got along extremely well with our neighbor’s Doberman, and they played very hard. My dog seemed unaware of her smaller size when they would wrestle. Having had multiple cattle dogs, I can say that they are somewhat unafraid to go up against larger animals/other dogs. They are tough and they are fast, wasting no time when they decide to bite. However they are extremely smart, intuitive and very trainable. They are stubborn so one has to be persistent and committed to training them. The three (same litter) that I have now are as sweet as can be with people but they get a bit worked up around other dogs and other animals.
My dog is driving me crazy a bit when he wants to go to the bathroom. He wont even let me put shoes or pants on when he needs to go. He is perfectly calm besides that but he destroys my clothes and the harness fighting me before every walk. What do i do? What am i missing? I live in an apartment so i have to let him out for a walk. Its getting cold where i live now so i have to put on alot of layers to go outside. Walks are like a little tornado in my house and qe go on 3 of them a day which is fine, but he has no patience.

If there wasn't a muzzle he wouldn't give up this easily and without muzzle he would try such things again against other dogs. The real problem is his owner, she has zero authority over him so he sees it as he can do such things...
I'm not into dog fighting but you're spot on. That goes for alot of those other big breeds that people think they look tough with. Would be pretty embarrassing trying to have that image and be humbled by a dog a third of their size 😂
Blue Dog is tough all right. I've seen one of these dogs kicked a glancing blow by a shod horse, blood running down his face from a big gash, refuse to stop working until the horses were brought in. Tough as nails.
I think Prince nonchalantly set that up. I watched it over and over. He knew it was coming. He manipulated and monopolised the situation with expert finesse:)
The muzzled pup's body language at 4:12 is chuckle-inducing. Poor thing is having to rethink his whole place in the world. You can SEE the wheels turning. LOL! But he's smart. He'll figure it out. 😉
The Heeler still has the muzzle on. The dog is smart enough to know it can't fight back at that moment. Male cattle dogs are very alpha, I have had several and they can easily take on dogs much bigger than them. Even when playing with other dogs they can do some damage. I have watched my female red heeler run through other dogs with ease. I have seen her knock over mastiff's and GSD's.
Loved the bully analogy.. By parents and or owners in this case handling things wrong.. it will make things worse! Your dog certainly is well trained and versed with dealing with all kinds of situations. Great job and thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊
