So I love that all my international subscribers have pointed out to me that what I called “normal” crutches are NOT normal most places outside the U.S.! That’s awesome to know!! 💜 Thanks for pointing that out to me. Here in the states pretty much everyone is sent home with the underarm crutches and those are sold more widely! 🇺🇸

Footless Jo i used forearm crutches last year when I hurt my hip and I got quite good with them (also in the UK so they’re just standard!) the one thing I noticed is that you’re positioning the end of the crutches outwards on the floor, like the ends of your crutches are pointing away from your body slightly and that makes them feel unstable so try to bring them in so they’re more in a straight vertical alignment to your body! I don’t know how to explain it better but I really hope that makes some sense?! Xxx

Hey Jo. I actually work for a company that sells and fabricates forearm crutches and other mobility devices. Its in the Netherlands so maybe not useful for you, but we are somewhat of an international company. In a way. Anyway, the forearm crutches you showed in this video are just like some we have here and they are absolutely garbage to be honest.. It really depends on the quality of the crutches whether or not they feel unstable. Try looking for crutches with anatomically shaped grips, closed manchettes (the plastic thing under your elbow, not sure if I chose the right word here) and a bit more flexible rubber caps on the bottom with a wide base (diameter of 22mm usually). For more user comfort you might want to look for crutches with an anti rattling thingy. It'll take away the metal rattling noise when you put the crutches down. We also have this thing we call rollators. They aren't very well known in the USA but here in the Netherlands they are the first mobility aid people think of. We have a special one made for amputees called the AmpUgo. Again, no idea if you can do anything with this comment, but I hope it might be able to help you. Keep on going, you're doing great!

In the Netherlands we have forearm crutches that have a circle that goes around your arms, so it doesn't 'let go' from your arms at all? And you can let them go when standing and they won't fall. When I had knee trouble, I used them forever, and they were great! Fun fact though: what you call 'normal crutches' are not used in the Netherlands at all! I've literally only seen them on tv and youtube hahah

@@FootlessJo I'm also Dutch and although I've only used crutches once in my life for like a week (I also used the ones that go all the way around and I had little trouble with them), I know that if you use forearm crutches a lot, your hands might start to hurt. So many people will tie a washing cloth around the hand rests. So if you find a way to make them work and they start to hurt, you might want to cover them like you did with your "normal" crutches!

Hope this helps. Forearm crutches are easier but the ones you have can be difficult, the top part where the forearm rests should be completely round so you can slide your arm into a type of ring shape at the top of the crutch, it automatically makes you feel a lot more steady. It’s also not tight at all so doesn’t feel uncomfortable. 😊
@jenniferp347

Would something like a band of elastic tied into those holes make it easier? I haven't used these but so how shakey her arms were and that having something all the way around would help.

My brother in law has used forearm crutches since he lost his left leg 40 years ago. He lost his hip on down and could not comfortably use a prosthesis. He swears by them and says they ultimately are far better to use than regular crutches. Actually, in a race he usually would beat me running down the block ! On the plus side you will develop superior upper body and arm strength and even possibly an athletic build, strong broad shoulders and strong arms 💪🏼

Maybe try closed forearm crutches. They give more support around the arm and can hang round the arm while you do stuff like get out your bank card to pay. Closed arm crutches are standard when you receive nhs care in the UK and very common over here.

@@FootlessJo I would definietly keep the crutches, . They are really awesome and superior in many ways to the "normal" crutches. Also you are less prone to falling, because you have more "give" in placement and moving. As the commentator above stated - forearm crutches are the norm for Europe. The "normal" ones fell out of fashion in some time after WW2, so that could be an indication to whats better.

Irish gal here! We only ever get the forearm crutches here, and I really recommend putting some padding on the hand grips of the forearm crutches. I have only used them for a few weeks at a time but I found my hands get extremely painful when putting my weight down on them so getting some sort of padding really helps me with the pain of that!

I have similar crutches. I added lightweight, loose elastics around the forearm part for my crutches allowing to utilize my Elbow to crutch for stability allow an open hand. It took months for them to feel more natural/secure than other aids. The elastics definitely made a huge difference for how I felt using my crutches

The wheeled chair is a “transport” chair. They aren’t really meant for you to wheel yourself. They are usually cheaper and easier to transport than a standard manual wheelchair with larger back wheels. I, too, am just learning to use forearm crutches. I’ve been told they are better than a cane or trek poles for my condition, and that they are a good alternative to my walker if I want to go on easy nature trails. Mine don’t have to be totally weight-bearing as I use them more for stability. I did get the ones with closed cuffs so they are harder to drop. That was a big problem with my canes because I have problems with my upper extremities as well as my lower.

i used forearm crutches just one to get around for years but now with my amputation i am really unsteady on them. I use a wheelchair in the house a tiny one to fit thru my doors. I used the knee scooter but i tend to want to go to fast on it and crash. Great video. Amputee Store has these sticky cushy pads that could work for the iwalker. I am using them in my prosthetic because my shin bone has healed with a bump on the end and they can not grind my prosthetic anymore.

Ive always used forearm crutches when I need to, I totally understand why you don’t feel confident, closed cuff crutches with proper grips would really help you feel more sound. I use ossenberg closed cuff crutches, these do not make any clicks/kreaky noises and last so much longer than the ones you’ve used in this post. I would also recommend using tornado tips/ ferrules (the rubber bits on the end) these are great for walking on wet surfaces. Flexyfoot ferrules are also great. The ossenberg crutches are a bit more expensive than the ones you’ve got but they really are worth every penny for long term crutch users. Plus they have plenty of different colours to choose from. Also using a rucksack/backpack 😉 my doc tried to get me use one of those knee scooters 🙄😬 I felt disgusted by it. So I use a swifty scooter instead when going anywhere long distance on my leg 🛴 for the times When I can’t wear my leg I use a lightweight active wheelchair I can push myself these are expensive but they do make life easier and these can fit thru normal sized doorways 🤗🥰

I broke my foot in high school and had six weeks of practice with the underarm crutches. Back in my day, we didn't have the option of nice custom-made cushions, so mom wrapped washcloths around the handles with duct tape. smile! Presently, I have a rollator, but my husband doesn't like wrestling it into the car, but if we go somewhere where there is a lot walking I will take it because I can sit down and rest when needed, and like you said, it's so big that it doesn't easily go through doorways and that's because I'm a BBW who lives in a cottage. So for ordinary trips, I use two canes. The cushions on the handles split (my canes are wearing out) and since I couldn't find replacement cushions, I wrapped the split ones with tennis racket wraps. I really like the feel of the wraps on my hands - nice and soft. Since my canes are wearing out, I've been thinking of replacing them with forearm crutches and wanted to know the advantages/disadvantages. I was told by someone that they are more stable than canes, but my pocketbook will howl if I have to pay a lot for them.

I really hope that you find a modification so that you can use it without pain! 🤗 In Sweden the forearm crutches are the "normal crutches", I have barely seen the other ones used by anyone in Sweden. So they are definitely usable but I can understand that the transition may be wired, I guess that you put weight and the center of gravity in different places when using them.

I really like forearm crutches. Been using them for 9 years. I can do anything with a below knee prosthesis, but if I don't need to carry much or go a long distance, it is easier to pick up the crutches than to put on the prosthesis. They are much more practical than underarm crutches on stairs and outdoors on uneven ground. The only secret to feeling stable on them is practice. A few weeks should do it.

Good idea for a video. That is a wide wheel chair. Wheel chairs come in many widths. A narrow big-wheel self-propelled/manual chair would be practical for many. My wife lasted 2 weeks with a chair before she switched to her Knee Rover off road version. Fore-arm crutches are an acquired taste/skill. Axillary (arm pit) crutches have their own struggles. I hope you can get a good support for the iWalk. You look so liberated on it. Have you asked your prosthetist to help make a support pad?

Coming from someone that has broken both their femurs and am in a very similar situation to you prior to amputation, since I am unable to get knee replacements due to my age.. I have used forearm crutches for at least over 18 months from all my surgeries. They definitely take time to practice on and can be challenging to start but once you get the hang of it, it becomes like second nature to you. I walk for extremely long distances (well walking around shopping malls constantly) and it's just so simply and easy. It's just about pushing through the initial awkward stage and not going back to your regular ones when it gets too difficult, as then you will never master the forearm crutches. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration for me!

Kristina, why won't they do a knee replacement on you because of your age? I'm asking because they did mine when I was 38. It didn't go well and it became infected. Long story short, when I had to have a CT 9 months later scan at the hospital the doctor on call came in to ask why in the heck would they have done a knee replacement on someone so young. They thought I had been in an accident of some sort.
@kristinanorman4979

Jodi M unfortunately they can’t do a double knee replacement as I just turned 21 and still have at least 60 years of walking left and I’m sure as you know they only last 15-20 years and I’d be lucky to have two knee replacements because of the condition that my femurs are in. So now I just sit back and hope my arthritis doesn’t get too bad. I hope everything with yourself has worked out though!

You will get used to the forearm crutches. I was scared at first, but they are what I trained on the most and still use the most. Axillary crutches were too much for me (shoulder pain, I was leaning forward to much thus hurting my already messed up back). Keep practicing! Put your pit crutches where you can’t see them, keeping the forearm ones close. I’m hoping I can eventually graduate to a cane, which I have tried already, but need a confidence boost. I would love to have nothing, but as long as I’m getting around, I will take whatever I can get! Keep practicing!

I love the lipstick color! I have used several of these. Never felt safe with the forearm crutches so I used the under arm crutches. I have a wheelchair as well since I dont have what I call long distance endurance. But my chair is bulky and heavy. I am actually looking into purchasing a lighter weight one. Being able to wheel yourself is essential. I've only seen the type you have at hospitals for transporting patients. I was intrigued by the scooter but it was super expensive and not practical in my home either so I never tried it. The Iwalk... well I figured that may be how I break something else haha. I didn't think I had the balance skills for it

As said before by a number of people: the gap in the "ring" around the arm is most likely the problem. I only had forearm cruthches for about 3 weeks, but because the ring was just about closed you don't have to spend as much energy on keeping your arms stable. I didn't have any trouble after one or two days. So if you have any straps that can be attached, that would probably help! Also, you might wanna get some padding for this one as well. My arms hurt pretty bad after a while just under my elbow. Started to swell and everything. Not fun. And on to something completely different, the lipstick looks absolutely lovely!

I just started using forearm crutches about a week ago after having to use a walker/Rollator almost a year ago for multiple spine issues which affect my legs. The crutches come in handy if I need to go to a relatives house which has steps. Each day, I get more comfortable using them.

For your trip I would suggest bringing the forearm crutches they will fit in better as well since most people in Ireland use forearm. Also just like the underarm crutches you can get pads for the handles of the forearm crutches that might make them better and there's also a cool neat little trick you can do with forearm crutches by propping up your leg on them when you're stopped and need a rest.

Love the lipstick! I also have lavender hair and another color that looks great is a blue-red, like MAC's Ruby Woo. For the forearm crutches, you'd feel more secure if you find a way to strap your arms in - run something through the holes, velcro is best, and strap in. Have you tried sheepskin underarm pads? When I broke my leg those things saved my armpits from bruising.

As a nurse, I teach how to use crutches and lets just say when I actually had to use them I was uncoordinated. I had no balance whatsoever.

I had foot surgery last year and used the knee scooter. My poor mom had to lug the thing up and down our front porch steps and get it into the back of my little hatchback though. That knee scooter probably saved me from a lot of pain. I'm not good on crutches and though I could get up and down the stairs with the help of a railing with them, I tripped (Like you did, Jo) and slammed my 2-day post surgery foot onto the floor HARD. I thankfully didn't have any setbacks from it, but it hurt sooooo bad. So after that, I relied heavily on the lovely knee scooter (customized with a little rubber duck squeeky horn).

Try using a strap on the upper clasp of the forearm crutches (ie: a velcro strap) around your forearm. It will increase the amount of stability that your grasp has on the crutch.

To anyone using forearm crutches for not so long, I have been using them for over 2 years now and the best tip it’s just to practice in a safe space. So learning with other people and just giving it time is the best way. And just saying there super safe and I have never had really big problems with them.

i was given forearm crutches in A and E after i did my ACL. i used them for 6 months whilst waiting and recovering from the reconstruction surgery. i found them super easy to get the hang of, way easier than the underarm crutches but I'm in the UK so ussually we use forearm crutches anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

My only device is a walker not sure it would work in your situation. I did, after two years, find a model with soft foam grips which has been amazing compared to the hard plastic grips most walkers come with. I've had to wrap the grips in VetWrap (probably seen when giving blood, the tape that sticks to itself but not you) because they tend to split and crack.

I wrapped tennis racket wrap over my cane cushion grips when they split. Feels nice and soft on my hands. I also have a rollator and wondered if foam winter pipe insulation would work as a cushion?

I was just about to point out, that in Europe where I live forearm crutches are our "normal" crutches! I was on crutches for a while after I broke my femur+ hip bone and the one thing I missed was some kind of strap under my elbow at the top - I see yours have holes so if you're handy or can find them on Amazon, definitely invest in some kind of strap so you can let go of the crutches! It makes life a lot easier when paying at a store or needing your hand(s) for something. Also I would recommend getting some padding for the hand rests as you might blister and get sore otherwise. As some people have pointed out, you seem to be bending over when putting your weight on your crutches. Your arms should be a little bent so you don't have to "scoop" your body every step. The crutches are there to support without you having to work too hard! :) Good luck, looking forward to seeing you master these crutches!

I have Cerebral Palsy and use a single forearm crutch with a full cuff. That's been my mobility aid since I was 9. I used two after I fractured my knee and it was great cause I was already comfortable with them, and because I actually can't use underarm crutches. I like the full cuff cause you can let it dangle while doing stuff

Hello Jo, I'm from England and forearm crutches are the ones we get over the NHS. Try bending your arms, it will stabilise you a bit and help you walk easier. I know it's late but it might help.
@elliepelton9183
@elliepelton9183 5 лет назад
For the forearm crutches my tips are get pads for them they will tighten the cuf and make your forarm more stable, practice a little each day the main reason you are unstable is because your muscules arent used to them, keep them close to your body, have a PT or OT adjust them, and look into different crutching patterns like stagaring them to give you a wider base. You may also want to use a gait belt and have someone walk with you while you practice, it will allow you to not worry about falling while you build your strength.

The holes in the arm cuffs I think are for straps. You need something to hold your arms in the cuffs for added stability. It doesn't need to be tight, mine just use spring steel and work well. I have used both fore arm and arm pit crutches and greatly prefer the fore arm kind. You just have to practice to get good at them. I have the same set-up for skiing but the cuffs on my outriggers have straps.

Another option that might be worth looking at are smart crutches, they are more ergonomic and comfortable. Can take the strain away from shoulders/wrists and have padded handles. They can be adjusted in angle to suit what you need.

I used forearm crutches in the past. If you had a pair that went around your arm instead of just behind them you would probably feel more stable. The added bonus is that you can let them go and they will hang off your arm and allow you to use your hands without having to figure out what you are going to do with the crutch you just let go of!

I still am hanging on to my foot, but need to offload. I use the knee scooter. Love it on nice even flooring. Hate sidewalks gravel ice salt and doorways.... but it gets me round. I'm obese and would use the iWalk, but my thighs are to big. I can see the forearm crutches and iWalk being a great combo. You are doing good. I have my pity parties now an then. However I realize that I am still alive and get to carry on living and #lovinglife 🤗💗

I use a closed elbow crutch, it’s very comfortable. Look up SideStix on RU-vid, there’s a woman who used these to climb the highest mountain in the United States, and she’s an amputee. The holes on the upper part of the forearm crutches, are designed to put some type of Velcro strap to keep your arms from coming out.

hey! i use forearm crutches full time. i would tie a ribbon though the holes on the forearm bit. i use ergobaum crutches and they’re similar, but feel steadier and have shock absorption!
@mariahchastain3546

I am not an amputee, but I use both forearm crutches and a wheelchair. The type of crutches you have are the exact ones I have (except mine are blue). The problem with that style in my opinion is that the part that holds your arm doesn’t cover enough of the arm. It’s too open. You can’t let go of the crutch for even a second and your arms slide around too much. I added a strap to mine which probably isn’t the safest thing in case I fall, but it did add to the stability.

I'm also quite good with forearm crutches and you just need a bit time and practice but your not doing anything wrong 😊 but I would recommend some padding for them too because you can easily get bruises beneath your elbows

My ex-husband used forearm crutches while recovering from Guillain-Barre syndrome back in 1986-87. I wish they had that awesome I-walk in 1974 when I was on crutches before and after the osteomyelitis caused my ankle to fuse. I would've looked more normal when walking although I was a badass on crutches at 11. I practically ran on them. I'd take a hop on the left leg in order to move faster. Lol.
