It lightens the seriousness of trying to be a perfect musician seeing this. I sit and play and beat myself up for not getting things right immediately, and it helps to see that it happens to every musician. I loved your first album and I'm ready to hear what else you're going to come up with.
It takes a lot of balls to upload a video like this of showing how frustrating the recording process can be as a musician. Most of the time people will only upload their takes that make them look the best. Mad respect to Rhett for this, and I can’t wait for the new EP.
Rhett, that's absolutely amazing! Lots of hard work put in. I'm not a professional musician, but I pick some guitar and I agree, I have the same frustrations as well
After hearing the trials and tribulations on Ear Biscuits I was expecting to hear the beeping from the van. Thanks for sharing this with us, you've really put yourself out there for the benefit of internetainment this week. From the auction video, then the GMM in the dark and now this. What can we expect next?
Mad respect to Rhett for showing how difficult, how stressful and how much time it takes to record a ep or album. Huge fan and respect once again.❤ I can’t imagine what it took to do it this but he’s one amazing badass😊. Thanks Rhett
As a long time mythical watcher I very much enjoy not having to worry about if my kids are also watching. That being said I F$#@ing love seeing that sometimes shit doesn't always work out and that you're willing to share that as well. You should do that with every song post the "good" video and then also the other 687 attempts to get there. Great work Rhett!
As a composer/musician, I think it’s incredibly important for other artists to share their struggles and frustrations so other musicians can see this often daily-experienced aspect of music making
Every time i have tried to play music in the woods, the bugs make it damn near impossible. Glad to see im not the only one. Nice to see I am not alone lol. Kudos for trying man.
Just an idea to try that’s worked for me: play it through no matter how many mistakes you make. It will ingrain all the simpler things to muscle memory, freeing up your present self to take charge of the more challenging moments. I’ve found I almost never need more than a dozen tries with this technique to get a “one take” recording knocked out. Food for thought 🤷🏼♂️ Can’t wait for the next album!
Ooh, this made me emotional. I’ve been experiencing so much anxiety because of my own impossibly high standards of perfection. I felt myself getting anxious for Rhett and how I definitely would’ve given up and this video would’ve never been seen by anyone else. But Rhett showing his imperfections, even with his amazing voice and the beautiful scenery, helped me relax and lose some of those nerves. We don’t need to be perfect. Sometimes good enough is good enough. Thank you Rhett 💜
Fuck man. I needed to see something like this not only as long time fan of yours, but also as a fellow musician. This shit had me rolling around laughing. The struggles of musicians that no one ever sees. Lol
This is a genius idea, and the perfect way to transform a "failure" into a step forward to embrace not doing everything perfectly, and it's also fucking hilarious 🤣. Love from Argentina!
I love that you've uploaded an "imperfect" video like this. So often social media is portrayed as aesthetically pleasing perfected content and it's so unrealistic and discouraging to smaller creators. Please upload more like this! Can't wait to hear the EP also!
Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us. This is some real shit. And side note, Rhett..your mild anger is the most comically entertaining thing!
Ty for uploading this. I needed to hear that thought of treating myself kindly. I am in overwhelm due to SLE (Lupus) diagnosis and need for surgery to remove my gallbladder next Thursday.
Aww this is me every time I try to record myself playing guitar. It’s impossible to play a song all the way through without messing up or getting interrupted. It’s nice to see professionals have the same problem!
Really appreciate the fact you shared the struggle. I'm working on getting a few of my originals produced and deal with this so much. You sound great and really looking forward to the album.
Funny how all of these look like they were filmed in a studio with green screen backdrop, cos it just looked too pretty. Damn my mind is getting fucked up with all those pretty cgi/ai/fvx. The real thing makes me think its fake. :S
Lots of love your way Rhett and family! I felt exactly like you out in the woods this morning, wrote some stuff out and changed up what I was doing, I wanted to watch one video and wow this was a fantastic one. Thanks for sharing Rhett. Just because it’s not worth it to strive for perfection in everything especially if that means we might freak ourselves out of even showing up with that expectation, doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about this and that going incredibly well even better than high standards could’ve anticipated! 🙌
Lmao I feel ya man, I’m thinking of setting up my mics near my bed because that’s where I play best, as soon as I set everything up and change the location it messes with the way I sound I’m the room and leads me down the rabbit hole of continuous takes because dumb mistakes happen. Also forgetting the lyrics are real lol. My tip would be use the notes app on your phone while singing
Videos like feel inspiring even when seasoned creators still have difficult moments getting what they want to show. Its worth trying and being compassionate with yourself, keep at it.
This is absolute gold. Especially for me, coming off the back of getting together with a friend to jam and play songs we'd written... then showing up and realizing I had no idea how to play or sing any of the songs I'd written over the last twenty years of my life. Better luck next time!
This is giving me confidence in starting something that I've always been meaning to. I dread starting it because of the struggle in the creative process. but knowing that others go through the same experience in one way, shape or form really shows that it is a part of the process. Can't wait to hear the new songs!
I loved watching this! I get so caught up in my own head when working on my own projects that I’ll sit on one small detail for months on end before beginning the process of creation. Its weirdly encouraging to see someone I respect dealing with the same thing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this, Rhett. It was so human and perfectly imperfect. Your music has touched me so deeply and I’m so excited to know more is coming ❤
