How did you learn kanji, and how long have you been studying for? Currently not very good with kanji (only know like 500), and I'd say are context driven (if I see them on their own I probably won't remember what the word is). Also my total vocab is limited af.... Basically I'm not even intermediate in Japanese lol
FYI the 100 yen onigiri are from the 100 yen Lawson. not the regular Lawson. they have a different lineup catered more as a 100yen grocery store with a green Lawson sign opposed to their usual blue theme.
You mentioned in one of the first videos you wanted to do these to get better at storytelling, but even with simple videos like this I'm already learning so much 😂And I'm looking forward to finally taste some proper onigiri when I'm going later this year.
I think you bought from Lawson Store 100, which is supposed to carry cheaper goods compared to the normal Lawson. I'm not sure if the food from Lawson differs to Lawson Store 100 but that might affect how you rated the Lawson products.
Japan really does its own thing, logic be damned lol But really, the translation of onigiri would be more like "a handful" or something, there's no ball in that word!
Tbf, this is all too common case of a name sticking even as the dish itself changed. Like how a doughnut originally referred to the nut-sized lump of dough punched out the center of the pastries, rather than the larger pastry itself.
For a jelly donut, I'm surprised by the lack of jelly. /s I think onigiri comes from this お O= honorifics/politeness (like O-mizu, O-Sake) 握り Nigiri = grip/handful But they also call them Omusubi (especially the triangle ones) I think musubi means knot/tie from google translate. We just translate it as a "rice ball" (because that's what it is) but the literal meaning doesn't actually mean rice ball.
I’ve watched every vlog but I haven’t commented on everyone. Mad respect for the staying on the grind with these uploads. And thanks for sharing your life in Japan!
Another Tuna Mayo from 7-11 stan. Nice. That onigiri was a bless during my trip in Japan a few months ago, some days walked even to 4-5 konbinis in Shinjuku or Shibuya to get one because the nearest 7-11 already have sold all the Tuna Mayo for the day.
Good, informative video~! One thing to note: the outside seaweed is typically 'nori', and the one which had additional 'seaweed' for a filling was probably a pickled kelp, which would certainly have had that meatier texture as you described. Thanks, fella~! What sorts of wacky things will Mudan get up to tomorrow?
I could be wrong but I think the seaweed one could have been filled with nori tsukudani which is like a seaweed paste. I remember as a kid my dad used to like to use it as a topping for his rice.
So funny 😂, Umeboshi onigiri is my favorite, the salty & sour taste goes really well with the rice. I like it so much. I bought a big box of umeboshi that I eat with my rice every day now.
Weirdly the best onigiri I’ve ever had was in Brooklyn in NY. They were a little expensive, but they were warm and freshly made for your order which made them taste fantastic! Actually those were legit better than any in Japan I had.
Before my current diet, I was a fiend for seaweed onigiri. I used to go to a local Japanese convenience store and buy authentic onigiri here in New York. It's awesome~~~
Maaaybe a bit food-related, but this weekend there is an event in tokyo dome centered around japan's festivals, there will be performance teams, games and food stalls from different prefectures - might be a fun day.
The best one I’ve had was a tuna mayo with the nori (seaweed) coated in soy sauce I feel like it was part of the sunkus brand but I don’t know how to confirm it as I haven’t seen one in a long time!
Try going for the premium Family Mart ones. Those that are wrapped in non-translucent plastic. It costs around 50 yen more, but I swear its totally worth it! :)
Kyoho jelly balls and pudding balls are fun to eat!! 😋 Take advantage of it since you're there 'cause I don't think you had them in your eating balls video 2 weeks ago.
I know this sounds a little sadistic but could you try out all the fried chicken related food like what connor and chris did back then? would love to see how you rate them. :)
I approve this scientific review. I, too, found Family Mart onigiris the best overall. I'm not sure but you may have gone to the discount version of Lawson based on your intro so the quality & price point was lower than regular, which should be comparable to the other two. To make up for it, go to an onigiri specialty shop and try all their onigiris. Ps. tuna-mayo supremacy.
Onigiri really fresh tastes amazing, but it gets dry and old fast. Japan's conbinis get in multiple shipments a day, while I think other countries tend to be day old which rarely is good. Worried about Mudan's day old fridge onigiri review upcoming 🙂
