Gucci: Ugliness is Luxury. I'm serious! The ultimate form of luxury these days is the luxury to be both rich and "tacky" and _not have to care_. Like your wealth is so independent of what other people think of you, that you can club until 6am at Burning Man while wearing $10,000 of clothes and not get braces for your teeth because you like the way they are. You can spend $40+ on a sheer lipstick because you like the way it feels on the lips and in your hand. 💗 You can have spikey lashes because you're too rich to care about being "pretty". It's like Editorial in its ultimate form. Instead of the wealth to be impractical (think long sleeves that cover the hands or wide skirts that make walking difficult), we have shifted to Ugliness being the ultimate flex. Like ELDO perfumes!! 🤩 Okay, that was fashion theory Naomi's excitement for the day, please move along 😁
@claudis.4015
@claudis.4015 4 года назад
Insightful! Although I'd argue that this style is still highly impractical. Because no one can wear these looks to work. So you literally have to be _filthy_ rich to be able to rock that. But apart from that I agree on everything you say.

Makes sense... Imagine you decide to look "ugly" or "tacky" or even disturbing somehow (I use quote marks because all of this is subjective) while depending on a job for your income; if you deal with customers, they might complain. If you're going to a job interview, the employer might not hire you because of your aesthetic... So it is in fact a sign of wealth to be able to dress like this without worries. (Just analyzing the situation, I'm very enthusiastic about people presenting themselves the way they wish to)
@kagitsune
@kagitsune 4 года назад
@@claudis.4015 Yep, exactly. _Filthy_ rich is the mood you're trying to portray with the aesthetic. 😉

Yes! I'd suggest that ELDO is much more subtle than Gucci in its execution... But unfamiliar / experimental fragrance does have the power to unsettle bystanders and get you called into the manager's office, unless you *own* the manager's office. So I get your comparison. Fashion Theory Naomi is fun, let her out ALL the time :D

ok, i have so many thoughts/feelings about this ad campaign! first, it seems like we're due for an ugly/harsh reality aesthetic to make a comeback. after a decade or more of super perfectionism that is now solidly in the realm of fake, we are craving real, raw, human things. but also, i feel personally called out by those lipstick on cups photos, because my (severely neglected) blog was inspired by a photo i took of lipstick on a teacup. Would you consider starting up Hannah Reads again? I love John Donne (particularly A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning) and his work is in the public domain. Your voice would be beautiful reading some ethereal poetry. I still listen to your Robert Frost Hannah Reads and it helps to calm my mind before bed. We could all use a little more calm these days so I would love love love if you continued either reading poetry in the public domain or possibly your own poetry (except I know people commenting can sometimes be rude so maybe turn off comments?). I've read some of your work before and it is beautiful, but I know putting yourself out there is hard and the few people may comment negatively are not representative of the thousands of people who love it. Either way, stay healthy and stay safe :) we love you!

This should by no means be seen as a hate comment, I genuinely would like to discuss this topic. Maybe it is because i am a collage student,or because growing up we never had the money for luxury things, but I just do no get the appeal to buy something that is no different than the cheaper version just because its "luxury". Yeah I am willing to pay ore for something that performs better, but to its limits, not like 100$ more for 5 minutes of wear. I am also wiling to pay more for a more ethical product, where in the manufacturing process the environment and workers are not exploited. Quite frankly no luxury brand can give such guaranties. I just do not get the appeal of "treating myself" with overprices goods, when buying the cheaper one has the advantage of getting the good and saving money. Which leads in the long run to less financial stress and overall happiness, so in the long run I am treating my self more by saving money and getting the same results from the product.
@OrangevayaMysh
@OrangevayaMysh 4 года назад
Student here as well, for me right now luxury makeup is anything not drugstore. Even some drugstore things too now that i think of it. Guess if your "normal" lipstick costs 25 bucks and the luxury option is 45 it's not that big a deal when you can afford getting several of those in a month no problem. Then you get another well performing product with a bonus connection to the fashion house you like. I guess the appeal of overpriced goods is stronger for people for whom the added dollars don't ultimately make a difference. Where i live i could pay my rent for the price of a natasha denona palette. But in the US will a 100 dollars be a dealbreaker for a middle class person? Doubt so. It's just another kind of shiny thing for people and i enjoy watching them play with those imagining a future where maybe i will live comfortably enough i can splurge on something frivolous and not count my pennies after

You may have hit the nail on the head by saying you’re currently a college student combined with coming from a home/socio-economic situation where the money was not available for luxury goods. I was also raised in such a home, but I am well into my career and in my 30s, with the budget to buy luxury items. I typically will buy 6-8 luxury makeup products a year. Everything about them feels special. Let’s use a lipstick as an example. When I carry my Tom Ford lipstick in my bag to reapply, then pick up the weighty tube, and feel the outstanding formula on my lips. It’s a ‘treat yo self moment’ that I get literally 100+ times for $40-$50. Whereas others may buy a $7 bath bomb from Lush to use once (this is something I don’t do, but I do ask for them as gifts). All of this is not to say that I only buy or feel that way about expensive/luxury products. I recently did a “if I could only keep 10 lippies” on my IG page and it was pretty evenly split between luxury, mid range and drugstore products. My favorite eye primer cost $3.49. But I do believe when your budget allows (as mine does currently) there is something very special about a luxury product. All of this is to just continue the conversation above. Not as a judgement or to say that’s how others feel or should feel. Just wanted to answer the question presented.
@OrangevayaMysh
@OrangevayaMysh 4 года назад
@@cecileganel can i ask what's that eye primer? Is it essence? Kinda in the market for one. And i agree about the treat your self moment every day. My most luxury thing is the venus 2 palette i got last august. It just captured me for like a month and then i got it with birthday money. Bear in mind, i'm in ukraine. I get my money from parents, so this palette is an equivalent of my 3 week budget. Which is not a lot even in ukraine but ok for a student. And then i get it and love it so much and use it almost every time i do my makeup. It's a great feeling, it feels very different from all the drugstore stuff i have. It feels like the height of luxury every time even after i depoted it and take shadows in and out all the time. Thinking of transforming the box into a full magnetic palette so i can use it forever
@cecileganel
@cecileganel 4 года назад
L Crook it IS the essence eye primer! The I ❤️ Colour intensifying one I believe. The more pink toned ones but the I ❤️ stage more yellow one is amazing too! I would highly suggest you turn the palette into a magnetic palette if it gives you all those feels. I know the magnetic strips are cheap and it would be a good investment into a little bit of daily luxury.

I love the messy glam look, these products look exactly as you would hope them to from the product shots! I agree it's not for everyone though. For the future, it would be great if you could include a shot after a couple hours of wear/at reapplication to see whether the wear-down is elegant and whether it layers well on itself after a while, because that's where I feel like my favorites shine!

The Gucci ad campaign did not lure me in. I found the mascara on the pillow cases & the smudgey lipstick kinda off putting. Like I needed to go wash my face & my sheets or wash their faces & their pillows at the very least. However, I didn't mind the lipstick on the cups probably because I see that kind of thing daily on my cups & glasses. I'm glad that the advertisement appealed to some people though. I'm more interested in the Gucci lipstick after seeing you apply it. It actually looks great on you. That sheer red is right up my alley. I'm going to put this on my wish list. Thanks for this video.

Sorry to be the temptress : ysl has a new line of lipsticks the slim sheer matte. They are gorgeous. Chapstick soft beautiful soft pigmentation and gorgeous colors. I got rouge devetu ( gorgeous name as well ) and it s the perfect warm sheer red. It s also not matte but not shiny like a balm maybe. A soft matte balm. It s lovely. The whole range is great and it saddnens me that you can t see many reviews on that. From the full pigmented line i have rouge paradox which is the loveliest neutral red ever . I have like 20 bullet lipsticks ( and cycled through many formulas ) but the pigment the staying power the color balance the soft look it s just great. And obviously no coverage on youtube sadly :) . I was thinking about goldie red and i am tempted ( it s a touch more than rouge devetu but not as much as my other orange reds i feel ) but we ll see for now . I m layering dior s gloss in rosewood over my more matte lipsticks and i like the way it takes them down a notch while warming / adding a white layer if it makes sense

Marguerite Jade is an absolute treasure! The most neutral brown tint that just slightly darkens my lips in a healthy, polished/pulled-together, effortless way. In addition, they recently released a clear gloss, which is meant to be used as face gloss AND lip gloss. Now that is tempting for me! I have not bought anything else from the line, but I want that clear gloss! LOL!

I love the Gucci beauty campaign because I just love it as a person who adores art & therefore editorial makeup & photography. I don’t wear editorial makeup myself, but would totally buy the lipsticks but with mascara I have such sensitive eyeballs that I just won’t buy it but that’s like every mascara. The packaging of the lipsticks just screams me. I am in a place where I want to make purchases so that every single business in Australia doesn’t close (as 2019/20 has already had so many closures) but the uncertainty makes me unsure. Thankfully the main person who makes a wage in our family is my mum who is a nurse, so her job is pretty secure currently. My dad also despite working in a field not viewed as essential (electrical/refrigeration) does that work for essential services (literally the power companies, the main rail company, basically the things keeping the area running). So other than me, who has had to move home we are in a good place. I am also applying for some of the medical admin positions coming up for the pandemic time, as I am trained in that area.

I strongly suggest to buy Gucci sheer (voile) lipstick only after swatching. my lips have naturally quite strong colour, and so any swatch I did on my hand didn't translate the same on my lips at all. none of the colours I would go for in a more opaque formula looked flattering. I ended up buying Loisa Red - cherry red, very berry-toned, don't really like opaque shades like that

Your initial impression is why I love high end mascara and think its worth it. Because perhaps more than anything, it's the thing I use EVERY day. That I will without fail, use up. And that often makes a difference in how my eye makeup works and looks. Also I have terrible trouble with inexpensive, drug store mascaras irritating my eyes, which can be bothersome all day long or mess with a look. These thoughts are under construction and subject to revision, but when I think about the pieces of makeup I find most satisfying, a really good, good mascara is really high on my list. but that's sort of my project this year with this intense project panning and shop my stashing. Where do I want my makeup dollars to go and how many of each thing do I want. It could also be that I have a really average (to me) loreal mascara going and I feel like my eye looks lack the splink splink.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video! For some reason I really love the Gucci advertising, even though it is not my esthetic. Though it is a grungier version of my esthetic, so maybe it does make sense 😂😂

My sister has the same genetic "deformity" that the lipstick model has; born without lateral incisors. I chose to just take that and ignore everything else. I officially shut the door in the face of every person talking about it being a campaign based on ugly. I'm uninterested in buying bourgeois designer makeup with a campaign built on insincere human connection. Instead I am screenshotting the ad and sending it to my sister with a text saying, "Look, this model is like you!" The validation and representation my sister felt from that is all I am willing take from this.

I'm not attracted by the campaign aesthetic, I don't mind it either, but the products themselves are interesting. Not that I'm buying anything because they are not in my budget and because what I'm attracted more to, the idea of an effortless, natural red lipstick I feel I already have a lipstick that does that for me. Not that the formulas are comparable by any means. But I feel that my need for that kind of lipstick is already covered.

That was an unexpected review but makes so much sense. I also loved the promotional pictures everyone hated to much in the glam-o-sphere. Bit if an unsuspecting viewer stumbled upon the review they would be intimidated by the length of it. I love listening to you but it would be wise to edit the reviews a bit more so it would be more streamlined from the get go

I like how gucci makeup is so fun and editorial and vintage and polaroid photo in a sweaty club of a couple kissing their smudgy glittery lipsticks away. Love. But gucci the fashion house, oof...

thanks for the daily videos. I have been privy to the world of very wealthy people; the girls actually barely wear makeup. Instead they do bimonthly microdermabrasion, light peels, other things. they wear makeup only for events, and when they do its generally pretty pricey and not ever 'heavy' they absolutely purchase designer makeup but never tons.. they are much more particular with their opinions and in being picky are not crazy about a lot of the options.. so just buy a few that pass their test.. the world of the mega rich is never one that is full of stuff..

You look like a gucci model! (in the best possible way). This ad campaign and the makeup is so rock and roll, luxurious and editorial but also "I don't care" effortless. I might need to get that lipstick...

Sometimes I feel like you are reading my mind....😳 I almost bought myself this exact lipstick with my birthday money. My favorite lippie, my ride or die, was Angel Red from Clinique in its Dramatically Different formula...which was very sheer. They changed their formula and I have been on the hunt ever since. I also am loving that mascara...but I can’t bring myself to spend much on a mascara. I will spend more on a lipstick (more than any other makeup, really). Also...I find that when I use Milani’s The Violet One eyelash Primer...I can use one of the plastic wands and get a bit more “pipecleaner-y” at the end. Would be interested in your thoughts.

Thanks for joining me for my morning coffee! These two products look like heaven for me. I almost always ONLY wear mascara and red lipstick and these look enticing. I am also intrigued by what you have one your eyes - it’s lovely. I hope your day is as indulgent AND useful as I found this video.

Very old school punk aesthetic which I grew up wearing...but the price of the mascara does not fit the “old punk” look. I no longer wear that style and think the vast majority of people who will pay that price point don’t. Lipstick? I am intrigued....because I DO wear that look as I get older...🤔...did it bleed at all?

Gucci is my jam so hard and I love the aesthetic of this campaign so much. Thanks for the review. I’m buying this mascara and lippy when I have used up my currents- Max Factor Flame Tree sounds like it might be similar to this one, I wonder if they are? Thanks Hanna

Does anyone know about Gucci Beauty's animal testing policy? That lipstick is gorgeous but I don't want to buy it if it's been tested on animals :(
@Creamy_Goodness
@Creamy_Goodness 4 года назад
I understand all cosmetic ingredients have been meticulously tested on animals over the years. I don't think they tested this or any particular lipstick on an animal necessarily.
@ChloeJ1999
@ChloeJ1999 4 года назад
@@Creamy_Goodness yes, I am aware all ingredients have, at some point in time, been tested on animals to ensure safety for humans. But as that is no longer a necessity in creating cosmetics, I was wondering if Gucci had released a statement as to whether or not they have tested their products and ingredients on animals, or not :)

Hannah! You're so beautiful sometimes I can't pay attention to what you're saying because I'm awed by all the prettiness, lol. That aside I love this video! The Gucci campaigns are grotesque, but...I dunno...at least they're interesting to look at 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think the lipstick looks gorgeous on you.
