A lot of Filipinos say that Haluhalo (official tagalog name) is ‘mix-mix’ (verb) In English. Although it’s not entirely wrong, I personally think that it’s bad translation. I believe Haluhalo’s name came from ‘haluhalong sangkap’ which means variety of ingredients. But yeah, around 99% of Filipinos will mix it first.
@remrickpatagan
@remrickpatagan 2 года назад
Exactly. Halu-halo means mixed/assorted, referring to the variety of ingredients that come with the shaved ice. This is what made it different from its earlier "con hielo" origins, which typically only had 1 main ingredient (e.g. munggo, mais, saba, langka, etc.).

you can also put in seasonal sweet fruits in it. Really good with cantaloupe or mangoes.

Yeah I don't get why people these days says its mix mix when clearly when we say halu-halo it's means assorted or mixed. It's what American-born Filipinos say what halu-halo means when featured in food blogs, now Filipino's believe that it's what it actually means like what the hell hahaha, I mean, just use the word in a different context other than the desert itself, it literally mean assorted, jumbled or mixed.
@pingyu5141
@pingyu5141 2 года назад
Of course obviously that's HALUHALONG SANGKAP like all dishes are with more than 1 ingredient. But i'm more sold to the 'mix mix' as literal translation to english of halo halo, coz yes.. we have to mix it thouroughly to correctly eat it. Though yeah i usually eat the ice cream and the plan first before mixing it.
@remrickpatagan
@remrickpatagan 2 года назад
@@pingyu5141 Why use the hyper-literal translation when such usage doesn't even exist in the Filipino language? To mix in Filipino is halo, i-halo, haluin, halu-haluin, etc. but never "halo-halo." We only have "halu-halo," which is not a verb but an adjective that refers to the quality of being mixed. It was also the original spelling before a fastfood chain popularized the erroneous "halo-halo" name. In short, "halo-halo" as a word and in the imperative sense of mixing together simply does not exist in the Filipino language. It is a corrupted version of the original "halu-halo," which any Filipino speaker would immediately understand as an adjective describing a mixture [of ingredients, in this case].

Halo Halo is literally what youre supposed to do with the dessert. Mix it. Eaten separately its no longer halo halo. the goal it to explore the different textures and layers of flavor. Its complex and not one/two dimensional like a typical North American dessert. Glad you guys are open to trying it.

My grandfather used to say that school isn't the only place to learn. You educate yourself by trying new things like food from other countries, and to accept and appreciate the unique tastes, textures, aromas. If you stick to the things you are familiar with then how will you learn? The admirable thing about your channel is that you do try to educate yourselves by trying food from other countries. The fun facts are great. In this particular video, the one thing you forgot to do though was to mix everything up before eating. It would have tasted better.

Halo-halo (or halu-halo) actually means assorted since it has assorted ingredients. Halo means "mix", that's why other Filipinos think the English for Halo-halo is "mix-mix". It's not totally wrong though since you have to dig the bottom ingredients and mix them with the ice before you eat them. Also, the 3 of them said that it is not so sweet. Since they don't mix it, I wonder if that halo-halo has still unmelted sugar at the bottom.

It's an ideal summer dessert. You should mix it all up to get the entirety of flavour and texture. The powdered sugar is usually at the bottom, thus the need to mix well first. Various fruits and beans are used depending on the season, availability and preference. So, halo-halo in one store maybe different from the other.

Right off the bat I got to say that as a Filipino I would like to thank you for properly defining what halo-halo is and not be in the company of foreigners and locals alike who propagates the common misnomer that it means "mix-mix. Halo-halo does not "literally mean mix-mix". Whoever came up with that definition has no idea how Filipino language works. There are terms in the Filipino language that is repeated twice. One of which is halo-halo. Another example, araw-araw. You don't translate araw-araw as "day-day". Araw-araw means everyday. So halo-halo again, is not "mix-mix". It simply means "mixed" or "mixed together". Also as most people here are saying. You need to mix that up first to taste the "halo-halo" experience.

I love halo-halo minus the beans, so I'm with you, Kelly! LOL! We used to sell one during summer in the past and I customize my own halo-halo. 😂
