Trying out a New Stitch to Make Leather Jars
I saw a Leather stitch on instagram that caught my attention, so I decided to give it a try - what came out was pretty cool! I used this Leather stitch in combination with my favorite leather wet mold to make a leather Jar with a lid that doubles as a second layer tray - It looks hard, but it's super simple! And you don't need many specialized tools. Happy Crafting :)

Cool. The term is cross-stitch in embroidery & it’s nice to see the stitches ‘crossing’ over to different mediums.

That's a great look for a leather canister, looks fun to make too! I think that stitch would be fun to use for leather beer coozies or similar. Thanks for showing us!

I use the corset stitch. It's the X stitch just minus the saddle stitch. You take the needle through the holes you've punched instead of going through loops created by previous stitches. I've used it to create cups to hold my tools.

I used the same X stitch combined with the saddle stitch on a wine tote where the X stitch is the "structural" stitch and the saddle stitch is just extra decoration

Look at your steering wheel! I’m pretty sure that’s the stitch you’re doing here and would probably be better with something inside like the bar of the steering wheel. But it looks great and seemed to work fine for you. Also love this little jar design. 🤙🏻

I actually have a steering wheel that just had a chunk fall off! so I'm going to pack it and use this stitch to wrap the part of the steering wheel with it, but I figured an entire video inside an old toyota in the rain was probably not a great idea haha! They do use a similar stitch but there's actually a line of fabric that runs between the two stitches and the X stitching is decorative, I think they kinda make a tube and slide it on but I have no idea with automation and all that. I'll post my home brew results on instagram one day when I find the time but great minds think alike!

I use that stitch when I make Stubby Coolers. I don’t pull the saddle stitches too tight, nor do I set them. It makes it easier to run the crossover stitch. I don’t use glue to join the edges, rather I wrap the leather around a “dummy container” of the same circumference and hold it in place with elastic bands. It’s a similar stitch to that used to leather wrap steering wheels.

This stitch reminds me of a stitch I used to put one of those sew-on steering wheel covers on for my jeep, also to get dye off your fingers I like to use olive oil, if it's really stubborn use a little bit of sugar to get some grit in there. Love the content I've learned so much from you. Keep banging them out

Who would have thought two crossover stitch videos would come out of New England in the same day. I just posted a Makers Mill Leatherworks video this afternoon where I used what I called a crossover saddle stitch. I used a coloured thread to make the stitching stand out. Great presentation and neat end product. Cheers...Freddie

That is how they've stitched steering wheels for decades and seats for high-end vehicles as well.

That is a nice stitch. I actually seen that stitch used on high end vehicles leather steering wheel covers. Been wanting to try this stitch for some time. I like the canister idea.

I did something similar using a wooden disc as the base. I did a similar stitch but stitched through the leather without doing the straight stitch first. I then pinned the tube to the base with copper nails to make a pen holder.

Thin leather behind to tie it together and use a different color thread for the decorative weave would be cool.

How is this different visually from a baseball stitch? Obviously it's a different implementation, but it looks like it gets the same result with more work.

Very cool! May I use this basic design in my business? I made the pencil holder from the video you mentioned. I was happy with the results, but I found it easy for stitches to tear out if I tensioned them too hard.

Absolutely! Besides reproducing and selling my paper patterns (like...the actual paper pdf's) anything I make is fully open for you to make, sell, adjust, mass manufacture - I'm just here showing you how to do cool stuff :)

This seems like it could be used to decorate a double-line of saddle stitches. Wouldn't actually be serving any function, but would look nice while still having the security of saddle stitch.
@Corter
@Corter 5 месяцев назад
I think that's probably the best use of it - decorative only, but it sure does look pretty and add a really cool vibe if you happen to be running a double stitch line somewhere on a piece

Do you have tips for milled leather? I bought it mainly for the texture but when I ordered my hide it’s super fuzzy on one side (non-grain). I’ve seen others just use burnishing stuff, and rub it in glass, but it leaves a weird uneven look, is it safe to sand it a bit? What is your advice?
@louieclinton3849
@louieclinton3849 5 месяцев назад
You should sand in figure 8 to get the surface flat evenly

Using different colored threads for the saddle stitching and X stitching would make the stitch line stand out even more...or maybe not??
@siestatime4638

I haven't tried it, but it seems like you could duplicate the cross stitching on the inside to provide extra strength and stability (rather than reinforcing with leather).
@Corter
@Corter 5 месяцев назад
you could for sure, it'd just be kind of annoying to actually do - I figured doing a simple leather strip just has you stitching some stitch lines you're already stitching, just with 2 layers instead of one. but it'd be a nice surprise to open the lid and see the ornamental stitching inside as well!

I know this has nothing to do with this video, but, what's your sharpening set up? Whetstone before stropping? What stone do you use to begin? (If it's not a damaged edge)

Paint the inside with food-grade epoxy, and now you're making cups and mugs. :)

What about slicing both sides and adding a piece inside that was skived on both sides that was glued together and sewn.
@Corter
@Corter 5 месяцев назад
Yea, in the end of the video that's what I suggested as well - for longevity, fi I were to sell something like this that's absolutely what I'd do. More of a french seam kinda thing but without all the folding
@chucklenz9011

Baseball stick allows you to do a butt joint that self aligns and won’t fold in on itself.
@SusFerrum
@SusFerrum 5 месяцев назад
at that point, if your'e adding another bit of leather on the inside to support the stitching, why not just do x-stitches from the outset? it will hold both the brace and the seams together in one go.
