Trying Out a Weird Jumbo Fountain Pen (Ironically called the Q1 Mini)

This pen surprised me in several ways. First of all, I didn't expect it to be so big, when it's called a mini. I also enjoyed the little magnifying glass on the cap, and I was skeptical about how easy it would be to grip, but it turned out to be pretty comfortable. I think if it had been longer or made out of a heavier material, things could have gotten bad quickly as far as ergonomics are concerned, but it turned out to be ok.
Here's where I bought it, and at the time of me posting this, you can see that the brand name is officially "Majohn" instead of Moonman. I don't really know the official status of that though: www.amazon.com...

Aren't we all just learning to communicate through space and time? Reminds me of that Aldous Huxley quote from "The Doors of Perception": "We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves. The martyrs go hand in hand into the arena; they are crucified alone. Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain. By its very nature every embodied spirit is doomed to suffer and enjoy in solitude. Sensations, feelings, insights, fancies-all these are private and, except through symbols and at second hand, incommunicable. We can pool information about experiences, but never the experiences themselves. From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes."

If met with a statement like "you should have used more blue" a useful approach is to challenge that: "Oh? why do you think that?" That moves it from their ideas vs your ideas into the realm of discussion. Once a discussion is established you are in a better place to test their statements and you are also more open to hearing feedback as it can be backed with their reasons and weighed against your own. :)

I think a good response to most critiques would be, "Why do you think that?" Because then it would help you determine whether they have a valid technical reason, or whether it is just personal taste. I believe you have every right to defend your work. But self reflection is always a good thing too. Only you know. 👍🙂

Hey Peter, in regards to your critiques issue, the simple answer is yes, just stand there and take it. Many schools actually don't allow the student whose work is being critiqued to say anything (which is wack honestly). But overall, critiques are there to give you perspective outside your own. They aren't meant to punch down or belittle the art or the artist, they're there so that you can gain insight from peers and potential consumers. If you feel a critique is unnecessary or that what that person is saying is just wrong, then don't listen to them. I've had plenty of professors make a suggestion to a student that, when implemented, made the piece worse. So don't take what other people say as gospel, it's just their opinion that you can choose to incorporate or not. I don't think defending yourself is wrong, per se, but it devalues the experience of hearing out your peers, and giving their thoughts a fair chance. Just because you believe a piece to have just the right amount of blue (as you said) it may look better if you used it elsewhere strategically. It also may look unbalanced. (This is also the wonderful power of digital art, where we can see just what something would look like slightly differently) Oh boy I know that was long, but hopefully it helps. TL;DR, critique isn't an attack, it's an open discussion about different views and opinions. Its best when you absorb what others say, and make your own (now better informed) choices from there.
@dianachase7867

I wonder if your peers struggle to produce a critique? If it’s expected and required..maybe that pressure causes a little panic and they pull things out of the air..which isn’t making sense to you. ? I think I would feel like a deer in the headlights if I HAD to critique your creations. Without thinking too much about it I suggest you listen and thank them and leave it be. Ultimately doesn’t the critique say more about the giver than the receiver? Maybe is it less of a need to defend as it is to have the last word? I’m just asking. You do seem to have a heightened need to feel understood. So you launch into your rationale..but then quickly realize there is no need to express your preferences. (I do this too!) I could be all full of bologna. I love your creations and videos. You are teaching all of us. Thank you!

#1 thing I learned in school (not art, but engineering) was that my classmates' "constructive criticism" was usually not useful. It typically came from a teacher with not enough time to correct every student's work, so they asked students to peer-review. It's incredibly useful for people in a profession that actually care to help each other, but when you're freshmen or sophomore college students, the peer-reviews usually just look for flaws so they can get their own grade and get out. Good peer-review and criticism comes with a discussion and sound reasoning from both sides of the discussion.

in my experience after two degrees, if it's a prof giving the critique it's good to push back in the form of a question so that you can learn more from them "why is it not enough blue? There's blue here and here..." If on the other hand it's another student and they aren't obviously someone with enviable knowledge and skill then they're probably just making stuff up to get through the class or they're trying hard but they don't know much and you take it all with a grain of salt. Especially since you have a lot of artistic experience and are older and wiser than your average college kid, it's not your first rodeo and your intuition as an artist is finally honed... to me school is about learning as much as i can so even when I disagreed with a prof's assessment I always tried to get to the bottom of why they thought that way.. if it was a peer? i didn't care too much. Maybe thats arrogance but I think it's fine. I don't know why they have peers review each others work when their critiques are most likely not based on anything substantial.

Peter, peer criticism only works to a point. And I would say to minor point. It’s why I find many review sites to be at fault. After all, so much of art, music, writing, cooking, etc., is subjective and reflects both the skill and opinions of the person(s) creating it. I was at a Mexican restaurant and thought the food was great. Later, I went to give them a review on Yelp and a bunch of people gave them bad reviews saying the food wasn’t spicy enough. So, different strokes (pen strokes) for different folks. Personally, I’d like to see more of the other type of artwork you do, beyond your sketches. I’m very curious to see what you’ve been having to defend.

Okay, Peter. This is how they go. The model with the red aluminum trim ring around it is the Moonman M2. The one with the flat spot on the side to keep it from rolling but is otherwise just a clear rod of acrylic is the Moonman C1. The one with the little "goblet" shape so it stands upright on end is the Moonman S5. And the fat one you call the Mini is the Moonman Q1. I don't have an S5 but I have the other three. :) I have the same problem with the Q1 of the cap not staying posted if I somehow apply ANY side pressure to the cap while it is posted, where it just "pops" off. The Moonman Wancai Mini is a tiny bit shorter than the Q1 you have in this video, and about as big around as the C1. The cap screws on to post so that it becomes comfortably long to write with. I like (LOVE!) Moonman's EF nibs and have the extra-fine nibs in almost all the Moonman pens I have. You should get the Wancai mini and try it out.

Even if you disagree with criticism, just try to entertain the idea. Sometimes it doesn't make any difference at all, Like applying silicone to wheels of a car, or just washing them with soapy water, or just ignore them until you need to change them. In all cases they will function exactly the same, except they will look different and some people will enjoy the silicone on tyres more than mud on tyres. Same goes with any work. It may be the exact same work, just with small change, that this person/group of people believe it will make it better. You must entertain that idea, as long as it's reasonable idea.

I want to start out by saying great video as always, I'm looking forward to seeing the full sketchbook! For what you were saying about criticism, I think I'm the same way in crits, I am usually pretty confident that there are errors and mistakes in my work, but I find that a lot of the criticisms I get are preference based or just plain wrong, so I find myself defending my work more than I would like too, only because I don't think half the criticisms I get are even remotely close to why I don't like the way things I made turn out. The problem is then I get really into my head about whether or not my dismissal of certain criticisms is just some subconscious defense mechanism and if my work is even worse than I thought, and from then on it's just an downwards spiral of mistrusting my own eyes and all positive feedback I have ever received. The moral of the story being I don't think you're alone in that concern.

Mans makes a really good point with criticizing art.. like, it's all an opinion, you can offer advice or suggestions but telling someone they should change how it looks just because they don't think it's good enough is just weird for something intended to be personal. But at the same time I typically feel arguing opinion is off putting in the first place seeing as you'll never both be right so speaking up doesn't get much farther either

Blue seems to flow more and more curves and like some parts seem similar to indian art and so on and so forth...maybe it's just bcause u enjoy drawing with black more... I dunno,just saying. I like all your art ❤️

The Q1 resembles the old Tombow Egg, but is noticeably different. The Egg is discontinued. My take on the Moonman vs. Kaweco issue. I personally won't buy a pen that obviously resembles a pen originally designed and currently/recently produced by another company. I respect the work that goes into creating a design too much to buy an obvious knockoff. If the design is original, and I don't immediately think it looks like another one, I will buy. I own the Moonman Wancai Mini for that reason. I may have missed it, but I didn't see another one on the market that looks like it. It is a beautiful little pocket pen the is surprisingly comfortable to hold. On the name change, I place the blame on Moonman. Yeah, Kaweco was a jerk registering the name, BUT the responsibility is on Moonman to make sure their name and logo is registered wherever they are doing business. China does not have the same rules on copyright as we do, but if you are doing business elsewhere, you are responsible for finding out the law in the new market area.

The only good critiques are the ones where everyone breaks down and talks about the 5 Cs: Concept, context, content, composition, and craft. The excellent critiques are the ones where everyone realizes that having a 10/10 in every area doesn't inherently make a good piece of artwork. There are tons of massively celebrated artwork with purposefully poor craft or doesn't have a concept at all or the composition doesn't matter, etc. Anything outside of that is people trying to impose their own style onto you, instead of appreciating yours and helping you grow.
@kontoname
@kontoname 3 года назад
Yeah, that's the only way. No other way is possible. For sure! Just trust me on this. This is everything! Ever! Anything else is entirely wrong! But luckily there's the 5 Cs which you can use to critique anything since the beginning of time and until forever! 😂💀

Peter, I am interested in fountain pens as well and I have been pen palling with a friend of mine using all my fountain pen goodness. Recently I have discovered a new ink that makes my inner raccoon ( Ohhh sparkly things) very happy. Are you at all familiar with Jacques Herbin ink? He has one called stormy night that is absolutely stunning. It is a dark grey fountain pen ink but it has glittery bits in it that do NOT clog up the pens. I have three different colors now, one is called Gris Orage which is Grey with gold fleck. Another is called Caroube de Chypre which is a gorgeous copper color ink with a wonderful brown shimmer to it and the third of this kind of ink I own is called Amethyste de Oural which is a bold purple ink with what seems like silvery or light lavender glitter/fleck. I only own three at this point because they are a bit spendy at close to $30US per bottle. I find that when you fill your pens it is highly important to shake the bottle to lift the fleck off the bottom of the bottle and when storing the pens it is important to store them nib down for best effect. Just curious if you have tried these inks. I think You might get a kick out of drawing something and have a slight shimmer to your drawing after the fact. Best wishes and brightest blessings to you, Peter.

There is no reason not to defend your choices as long as you are willing to accept that you could be wrong. If someone can't back up their criticism then it is not valid so a healthy debate on disagreements is always a good thing.

Everyone see's art through their own personal growth, personal experiences, and personal taste/tactile. I have always defended my work but learned to not let it show too much in the moment, but rather take everything into consideration as an act in front of everyone. Every now and again someone will suggest something that will be beneficial but until then, i would just nod, and defend your art in a small manor, not to show a complete blocking of constructive criticism. There is always room for improvement but how handle the criticism will determine weather or not you are growing as an artist and individual. That is just experience and suggestion to you but you do you. Thanks for sharing, you are very talented.

When it comes to art I think it is perfectly okay to disagree with criticism that you feel differently about. Art is such and opinionated thing that is meant to make people feel something so you are bound that have people that feel differently about it, some people will like it, some people won’t. At the end of the day, what is really important is if you like it and if you feel you did that piece justice. If you say it has enough blue then it has enough blue

A bit of trivia in case you're interested Peter! About the ink names, 'konpeki' means 'azure'. 'kosumosu' is just the way they pronounce 'cosmos' (I'm assuming the type of flower because of the pink colour, not as in space). And 'tsutsuji' means 'azalea'. So the names are quite poetic too!

I think when you have peers critiquing you in a class setting, you have to bear in mind, this is also about them *learning to critique* and learning to understand and analyser other people's work. It's the job of the professor to make sure they actually do learn from it, and if there is some part of the critique that doesn't quite add up then they should be dragging more words out of that student to make them follow through on their thought processes. If the professor isn't doing that, and you are having to sit and take bullshit critique, then the responsibility is wholly on the professor.

I love your pens! It is so nice to have a collection of pens and inks. The pinkish ink looks like a magenta tint. Some critiques are not helpful for an individual artist. If you need to improve your skill level is one thing but saying how someone else would have drawn it is more like opinion. Just saying.

So this pen actually looks like a carbon copy of the Tombow Egg. Moon man is definitely copying designs. Definitely a cool pen though and the tombow is discontinued now so yeah not as bad as then copying kaweco I guess.

Everyone copies designs. But, I couldn’t find a demonstrator version of the tombow egg?
@JVan-ic6ic
@JVan-ic6ic 3 года назад
@Peter Draws no Tombow didn’t make a demonstrator. I guess that’s like Ford copying a Mercedes design and changing the colour it’s a bit too close for comfort in my opinion to say it’s an original. I guess we just accept that it’s a homage (like some off brand watches making look a-likes with different names) and not an original. Thanks for the reply I hope you have an awesome day Peter!

I look at criticism like this. As the creator of your artistic expressions, your decisions are yours. If it comes down to technic and choice of medium; and the advice is actually from a place of genuine knowledge of craft that could be useful to your artistic growth, do with it what you will. Your uniqueness as an artist deserves no defending. Lots of unnecessary heckling to creative individuals to make the artists bend more towards popular opinion and lose their individuality as a creator/artist.
